I guess I have been a UT fan as long or longer than most on here since I attended my first game when Steve DeLong used to terrorize offenses in 1961. Dad was an alum, I was 7, and we sat in the old north end zone bleachers and watched Walter Chadwick score the winning TD's in the game against a team I cannot remember. I hve seen family members march in the Pride and friends' kids play on the team.
One thing that bothers me in VN is this "true" fan BS. There have been 4 "true" Vol coaches in recent memory - Neyland, Wyatt, Majors and Fulmer. The job was all they ever wanted and were about. No moving on, no gaming people - just all about being a Vol coach. Then there were Dickey (Gator or Vol?), Battle (incompetent bammer), Kiffin (OMG what a screw-up!), and Dools (Precious - really?!). No Vol fan should be expected to go along with the crowd and pretend a head coach is God's gift to the Vol job when they are clearly conflicted, incompetent, or has a personal agenda that does not have UT as its focus.
So when a negative comment comes out from a Vol fan posting, consider it. You can go back to drinking the orange-aid if you want after you think about it.
Had he been qualified I wish Butch had been hired after Fulmer. The baggage of two idiots in a row after Fulmer's melt down will be tough to overcome. Add in the two current village idiots that have embarrassed UT nationally once again in Hart and Cheek. I want Butch to succeed for the sake of all Vol fans everywhere. However, he is not a proven Vol until he earns it. Talk is cheap and at this point he has done nothing to prove he is worthy to sit in the chair of the great Vol coaches of the past. If he is successful he has to prove it is his dream job and not jump to the NFL or Michigan or some other place.
Until we know for sure I will be rooting for him to get it done and always rooting for the players themselves that want to wear the orange and give it their all.
