Global Warming

Btw, I broke my leg trying to ski in Idaho when I was a kid in June. The Rockies can have snow all year. In fact, less so recently than before.

As Argentina has seen the coldest winter in 40 years. Seems they've even seen colder temps than Antarctica as well.

But we are already not in an ice age....

Some places do get drier during ice ages, that is true. But then we have desertification going on right now, and we are certainly not in an ice age. Africa has gotten much drier over the current interglacial period.

It's complicated, you know? I certainly don't think we want to get in business of manipulating climate, if we can help it.

Honestly, can it be helped? We're a species of instant gratification. Unfortunately, patience is not a human virtue. If we can make great scientific bounds at the cost of the earth lasting for an additional few thousand years, you bet your ass we'll put ourselves before the planet.

Apparently so.

what's a few thousand years compared to the billions it's already been here and the billions more it still has?

The point is that we are talking about weather events, but the summation of all these is how one arrives at global temperature. And that's rising.

The Argentinian "cold wave" is due to a series of polar outbreaks, much like how the Southeastern US gets it's winter weather events. IPCC report specifically predicts such events occurring. You know that whole "herff derff, now it's not global warming, it's global climate change" thing people get worked up about? This is why. Global circulation patterns are altered through global warming, affecting weather in different areas in more than just the warmer direction. These kind of heat waves and cold snaps, coupled with a rising global temperature average, is EXACTLY what is expected by GCC theory.

I also remember finding a large snow drift by a mountain lake that was the only snow left in that little valley, and you could see where a mountain lion had spent a warm afternoon lying on it. It's strange to see piles of snow when it is 70 degrees, but the night is cold up there and every once in awhile you'll get a little storm that can allow a deep drift from winter to persist.

can't really be called "global warming" since several hundred have died from extreme cold temperatures in Peru.

also, hurricane season is nearly half over and thus far, 2010 has been another yawner.

I think that it's worth noting that hurricane season is half over by dates on a calendar, but not half over if you weight that calendar by number of storms that typically occur during that period of time. Hurricane season is not a bell curve around the middle of the season...it is significantly weighted toward the end.

In fact, this hurricane season is actually "above average" already by historical standards. That doesn't mean that it will stay that way, but with El Nino doing its things and ocean temperatures really hating up (compared to average temps), we could see things really begin to pick up.

Sounds like Norway...

I haven't, and I doubt, I will read this thread in full. But, a brief synopsis of what is really happening:

1. Man-made global warming is happening, and this is the scientific consensus on the matter.

2. The long-term effects of man-made global warming are still debated although the window on the debate closes more each day. The debate is not whether it is happening, but rather the full extent of the consequences (and the consequences start at "significant.")

3. Although we knew about the CO2 cycle going up in the 1960s, the first really predictive paper came out in 1972 (let me know if you want the citation), predicting 0.5C warming by 2000. This was the starting gun on what should have been the work of two generations. Instead, we built Las Vegas - both literally and metaphorically and ideologically.

I call Bullshat..........Media made (possible) disaster at best. FEAR,FEAR,Scare,FEAR>>> Tree huggin liberals have made a fortune on this farce....JMO...

I'd like to see one tree huggin' liberal who made a fortune on it, actually.

well at least he is putting the millions to good use. you know by buying beachfront property that according to him will be underwater in 20 years.

Not a tree huggin' liberal. Actually the man responsible for diluting the Endangered Species legislation.

However, a few words on Al Gore:

Let's not forget, he should have been President. He won Florida outright.

However, I can't defend his record as Senator nor Veep. BUT, he has remarkably transformed himself, and has done more since leaving politics than the Clintons combined. He has far outstripped his former boss in significance and actually done alright for himself since leaving politics.

he what? He exploited bullshiz hysteria science essentially into robbery of the stupid, got himself the uber-liberal nutjob prize from the now irrelevant Nobel committee and gained like 427 pounds making him have to hypocritically cool his summer house to about 47 degrees.

Bill Clinton is still one of the most sought after speakers on earth, is highly esteemed from most corners of the globe, has been asked to take charge of two global disaster fundraisers and has made an absolute fortune advising companies and speaking to their employees.

Al Gore is a sociopathic hypocrite

Don't kid yourself.

His significance is linked to a scam that he has pushed, that is adding to his wealth which is all he is really worried about.

And as to his lost bid to be the POTUS, his home state new better. (or at least where his family is from)
