Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

Ok, here is a challenge. This one is a little further away but hopefully someone remembers. In Gatlinburg, when you first come into Gatlinburg there is a light with a hard turn back to the right. There used to be a Mexican restaurant on the left. I think it was owned by a country music singer. My wife and I used to go there once or twice for a couple of years. This was late 80's/early 90's. We were trying to think of the name of it a few weeks ago and it's driving us nuts. Can't think of the singer or the restaurant owner. Anybody?

That was it I think. Do you recall the name?

Edit: According to Wikipedia, it was called "North of the Border".

yep, that's it. Not a great location as i recall. TG and I were friends when he was living in Knoxville. He moved back to Hendersonville about 10 years ago. He was still performing up in Pigeon Forge with the Smith Family on occassion.

Know how to make a small fortune in the restaurant business? Start with a large one.

My first job(non hay/tobacco) job was at White Stores...man those bow ties..plus we carried groceries to the car and got tips

Got the best dog I ever had in my life from a White Stores parking lot when I was a kid.

Also, Sky City in Midland shopping center.

I miss Knoxville having a BMX track! We spent a ton of time there growing up.

We loved that place.

I never went.
TG is a cool guy though. Elvis gave him his name. His actual name is Billy Browder. Elvis nick-named him "The Good Shepherd" when he was living in the basement of Graceland. Elvis would put up other Memphis artists from time to time to help them out. Shortened to TG, and changed to "Sheppard," he took it as his stage name. Cool story bro.

True story, TG told me that over dinner at a Shoneys in Nashville the day after he had dinner with Lori Morgan and Sammy Kershaw.

yep, the bridge player was likely someone I knew. probably Mike Cappiletti (sp?). My dad is a life master and teaches bridge.

Surely someone has mentioned the Roman Room in this thread.

The blues band at Hawkeye's was likey one of Michael Crawley's incarnations. The Mac Daddies, Crawdaddy.....
It was Crawdaddy. Great version of Soul Man every Sunday night.

Amazing story.

It's only been closed maybe a handful of years but Mancino's Pizza and Grinders on Middlebrook in the Kroger shopping center was fantastic. Huge, hot grinders and they were delicious.

Was it Edward's Restaurant on Kingston Pike in front of Bearden HS?

Larry Edward had three locations, kp. Oak Ridge. Halls. The Halls location has been Bel Aire Grill for years. Bel Aire is probably on the way out as well.

That is the only Bel-Air left. The owner was a silent partner with the true owner, Tom Clark. He got greedy & tried to open too many bel-air grills. The silent owner saw the writting & bought the one in Halls out right, giving up his ownership in the others.
