Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

Alexander's out west on Kingston Pike. In an old house possibly named for the American Legion. Just east of the Orange Tee driving range if I'm remembering correctly.

Was it in the bottom of the Bearden Shopping Center? Kids from our high school had pretty much all tables reserved for our prom that year. One of the best steaks I ever had....(as I merembr) ;-)

You're right, it was called Hawkeye's Too at one point.

The only time I ate there it was very nice inside...and pricey!

Shows yiu how ****ty the historic preservation was in this town. Allowed to build a freakins Texaco in the front yard of a home on the national registry that has bullets in the bricks from the civil war.

Not what you were talking about but there was a place called Brother Jacks that was a BBQ and had pig burgers. Not the greatest neighborhood but good food.

I remember Brother Jacks. Great Bar-B-Q and you are correct, it was not in a good neighborhood.

Anyone remember Little Star in Bearden? It was next to Fisher Tire - the building became Big Fatties after Little Star closed down.

Phillip's 66 originally. Knoxville had to fight like hell to keep them from tearing it down. One proposal was to pick it up and turn the front toward Peter's Road.

There were two ancient Elm trees (hundreds of years old) in front. Phillips 66 was negotiated with and one was spared, but the other ended up dying shortly after the gas station was built. Phillip's 66 argued that they'd put up a building that blended with the B-P House. Slapping on a few bricks really did the trick.

Rathskeller was in the back of Western Plaza across the parking lot from the Ice Chalet.

The Yardarms in Fort Sanders. I believe it was across the street from where The Hill Bar and Grill is currently located.

Is Caz Walker's still around.......Sam and Andy's.......Hymie's bar

None are there (well Sam and Andy's still exists in Farragut and Fountain City). The building that Hymie's, Horizon's, and the Maltese Falcon (Shelbourne Towers) were in isn't even there anymore. Several of the Cas Walker Store buildings still stand as other businesses.

Todd Steed owns Cas Walker's old mailbox.

Great info, you are the go to person for the history of Knoxville.

Yardarm, there on Forest at Western, long gone. It was on down and across Forest from Mad Dogs. Looks like it was made an efficency rental.

While in the military when I would come home I would spend tons of $$ at Disc Exchange.

I was mildly devastated when I rolled down Kingston Pike and saw it was closed.

What was the name of the military surplus store on Chapman Highway... about a mile from the Henley bridge on the right hand side? That was a cool little store.

The original one on Chapman Hwy is closing very soon, maybe end of the month.

Desperado's... Never went in there but every time I drove by there the song popped into my head. It became a Chinese buffet several years back before it was ultimately torn down wasn't it?

I have a vivid memory of a restaurant/bar (can't think of the name of it)that used to be on Weisgarber, pretty much on Weisgarber and Middlebrook Pk. It would have been right across the street from where the post office is now. Anyway, my parents took me there one night when I was very young to see a theatrical take on "Harvey The Rabbit". This was probably early to mid 80's I think.

Somehow I had missed Shelbourne was gone! I haven't been on Francis St in years but damn.
