Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

Not what you were talking about but there was a place called Brother Jacks that was a BBQ and had pig burgers. Not the greatest neighborhood but good food.

Yes, but it didn't matter in the wee hours. :good!:

Doodles. North side of Kingston Pike near Downtown West.

Flanagan's - Downtown West.

Desperado's - Papermill at Weisgarber

My friends and I mostly lived and worked in West Knoxville in the late 80s and early 90s and used to hit a lot of those places regularly.

Desperado's was kinda fun, not quite my scene although some I knew loved it. Proximity to Waffle House afterward was a plus though (WH was oriented perpendicular to how it is now).

Doodles was a good place to drink and dance with friends, and maybe throw a few darts.

Rumours (across KP from Chili's and a bit further west) was a pick-up joint, didn't care much for it.

Michael's Cow Palace, where at&t is now on KP near Chick-Fil-A (different building though) was just a place to get hammered.

Always enjoyed Hawkeye's Too and Abner's Attic in the Baker-Peters House.

Yes! There used to be one on Western Avenue and 640.

White Stores! Hahaha

You're going back to the 80's with that place. I remember those.

My first job(non hay/tobacco) job was at White Stores...man those bow ties..plus we carried groceries to the car and got tips

The old Bearden Jr. High School on Kingston Pike, I was there in 1977 in 7th grade for it's last year. It was so exciting going to the brand new location in 1978 for 8th grade which was close to Middlebrook Pike.

Hawkeyes was my #1 way back in the thread. I miss it. Lots of great times there. My band played one of the hawkeyes X-ma's parties.

Anyone remember Gryphons?

Bash Riprocks - short lived bar 17th/Cumberland in the back of what is now Firehouse
Hawkeye's on Sunday nights (blues band)
Place where Panera is now on Cumberland (Bombardiers?); didn't that used to be a Cats records too?
Varsity Inn
The Torch
The Original Longbranch
Rumours (hilariously cheesy place)

I remember reading a story in the Beacon about a kid that used to hang out and play bridge (cards) at Gryphons

It is also the old Bearden High School. I think the current HS location opened in 1970. So BJHS only existed for about 8 years.

I still can't recall what Baker-Peters was named when it first opened as a restaurant. Hawkeyes Too was it's second or third incarnation. Abner's Attic at one point. Baker-Peters Jazz Club not long ago. But it was originally... ??? It was a sister restaurant to The Half Shell.

Jeremiah's?

I was there for 8th grade then. :good!:

Yep. I did 6 years at Bearden Elementary, 2 at the old BJH (former BHS), 1 at the new BJH (which I think became a middle school eventually and 3 at the current BHS.

Perkins for kindergarten

yep, the bridge player was likely someone I knew. probably Mike Cappiletti (sp?). My dad is a life master and teaches bridge.

Surely someone has mentioned the Roman Room in this thread.

The blues band at Hawkeye's was likey one of Michael Crawley's incarnations. The Mac Daddies, Crawdaddy.....

I was walking down the strip last Saturday with my son and it was so weird. I was like, "well, this place used to be the Polar Bar, across the street was called Flamingo's, that used to be a parking lot, that was a liquor store, that was a Walgreen's, that was a Kinko's" etc. etc. Thanks for sharing all the memories. Every time a place I had totally forgotten about or haven't heard in 20 plus years is mentioned in this thread I get so excited. Anyone remember that guy's name that owned the little corner store on 17th Ave in front of Grand Forest?

Do you remember the last year at the old Jr. High on Kingston Pike that on the loud speaker they told everyone to stay in your classroom because there was a huge fight going on on the hallways?

Also, the required sitting through cheerleader tryouts in the auditorium having to vote for your 9 favorites as they performed a cheer one at at time in front of the whole school always cracked me up. I only remember doing that at the old Jr High.

If you were a fan of Orange Julius they were bought and are now owned by Dairy Queen and you can get their drinks at Dairy Queen. One just opened in Farragut.

Lol! I've never been to a drive-in theater before but I heard the only one still open in this area is the Parkway Drive-In in Maryville.

I saw this mentioned before in this thread and really loved that place.

Just For Feet
Celebration Station AKA Zuma's
Regal Funscape Arcade(was just outside Regal West Town Mall)
Is Sir Goony's still open in Farragut? Lol

You can get Orange Julius at Wishbones now.
