Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

I remember going to Shakey’s Pizza when I was a little kid. They showed silent movies and I thought that was so cool. I think they also tossed the pizza dough in the air. It was a long time ago, but that’s all remember.

Does anyone remember Shakey’s Pizza in Knoxville?
I don't remember it, but I lived in Knoxville from 75 to 79.

I lived right down from it and my roommate worked there at one time and it was a restaurant, bar and a motel. The restaurant was in front and then kind of behind the restaurant was the bar.

The bar was called Cadillac’s late in the hotel structure’s life.

The HoJo’s restaurant fronting Kingston Pike was torn down and an Esso/Exxon station was built on that corner in the 70s or 80s. Before the gas station was built there it was an Esso station a few hundred feet west on Kingston Pike where Krispy Kreme is now.

Yep I have been in the restaurant and the bar back in the day.

From the Knoxnews piece that Mad posted. I wondered if the Hollywood Restaurant building is still there. Sadly, it isn't. It's a more recent building and is the home of Little River Art.

I don't know where Stefano's is because I haven't been near the Strip in years, but I seem to remember the first Ruby Tuesday being just right of the Strip on the side of Cumberland nearest the interstate as you head west. Maybe down near where you can walk up to Fort Sanders Hospital. I know it was below The Place .
Ruby's was on 20th St on the north side of the strip.

Long John Silver on Clinton Hwy near the Krystal
I miss Long John Silver's, in the 70's after they came to this area. They are just not the same now.

Currently in that former Long John's building: Wings Express! We talked about WE recently in this thread- the same people that owned Spicy's (on the Strip, in the Old City, and then on Emory Rd. in Powell at Karch's Crossing last.) Gotta love the bird in the pic!

I lived on Deane Hill in the 70's, I don't remember this place. Where was it?
If you are on Dean Hill Dr going towards Kingston Pike and right before you would merge onto Kingston Pike it was down a little side road to the right but I can't remember the name of it. I lived at 7104 Dean Hill Dr and my Grandparents lived in that house since the 50's.

The Hungry Fisherman’s driveway is on Baum Drive. The building is on Baum Lake. Just south of and across the railroad tracks from the Jewish Community Center on Deane Hill Drive.

I think that the property was a nursery/flower business and farm before Baum Drive was cut in and the area was developed for light industrial.

Currently in that very same LJS location's building: Wings Express! We talked about WE recently in this thread- the same people that owned Spicy's (on the Strip, in the Old City, and then on Emory Rd. in Powell at Karch's Crossing last.) Gotta love that bird in the pic!

Back in the day, those fish and chip places were excellent. As good as what you can hope for from today’s better fine dining options. But that’s true with so many Fast Food joints if you compare the quality from 50 years ago to today.
