We all know the story. 2 years ago Danny White, after being turned down by multiple candidates (by many sources), settled on Josh Heupel....
Dan White was turned down by one person: James Franklin. And Dan never even publicly acknowledged Franklin was the guy he spent two and a half days wooing.

He had feelers out to gauge the interest of a few other folks, but he only ever made a job offer to two: Franklin and Heupel. And the second accepted.

You say you know otherwise "by many sources." Show me any reputable source that contradicts what White himself has said, and shows proof for the contention.

As for resurrecting threads to make fun of the trolls and haters, that's simple. Just don't be a troll or hater, and he'll never quote you.

Go Vols!

I’m not so sure that White didn’t pull one over on Volnation. I think Heup was his guy all along and he interviewed just for perception, to appease us Vol lunatics.
I’d be curious to know how many “candidates” actually had an offer opposed to just being interviewed.

Or was Heup the standard and lens he was viewing all candidates through?

Both questions have the same answer: 2.

Two were interviewed, two were offered the job. James Franklin, and Josh Heupel.

But we did have feelers out with a few others gauging their interest very informally. Never got to an actual conversation between Dan White and any of them, though, much less any job offer. Just AD Office-to-Agent kinds of back channel feelers.

As for your main point, I think Dan truly was going after Franklin. I think he was the #1 name on the Dan White dream sheet,. White spent over two days trying to corral him. But by the time Franklin made it clear his answer was no, Dan already knew where he was going next: Josh Heupel.

I think he interviewed the players to see what they wanted, and he was like ‘wait a minute, I know a guy’ 😂 and he was right

You know what I think? Huh? What's that? You don't care? Well, I'll tell you anyway. I think thread bumpers have a post season case of what we gonna do-itis. Yep, that's what I think. Uh-huh.

We all know the story. 2 years ago Danny White, after being turned down by multiple candidates (by many sources), settled on Josh Heupel, the coach from whence White came, UCF. Not surprisingly, many Vol fans were underwhelmed by the hire. Some were very vocal about it, others were resigned, some took a wait and see approach. I was personally very underwhelmed, though it did seem like Heupel was generally articulate and he came across as genuine - a definite move up from Slingblade McGump.

Today, it seems a few fans are taking some form of delight in bumping old threads where many expressed disapointment in the hire, some more vocal than others. I don't get it. I don't recall anyone jumping up and down about the hire, CERTAIN we would win 11 games in his second season. I think we have ALL been pleasant;ly surprised by how fast Heupel seems to have turned the program and the culture.

Why make this an issue? Are some just that bored? I don't know a single fan on this board who is nbot generally positive about Heupel at this point. If some have been slow to get onboard, well excuse the F out of them as we have ALL had to deal with 15-20 years of an absolute poop-show.

Give it a rest, sparky. Heupel is doing great things. Let's just all be happy about that, and hope that Tennessee football wil;ll soon be back among the elite!
I take it you were one that trashed the hire and are now trying to get out from under that post(s).

WilcoVolsFan has done more trolling today than any violation member I remember. It's like the guy that just got fired and has to send that email to the main distribution group before he goes but in this case, he just did it for no reason at all.
Yea very childish

Throw in that BigOrange1 guy, too.

Trailer park must have gotten a big meth shipment in today.

Hmm, I don't feel this is true, although we can never really know. But DW made TWO runs at J Franklin and (I believe unofficially) TWO runs at T Elliott, which were thankfully turned down. But I'll say this......if any AD could play his poker hand that well, it would be Danny.

No, not really. I admitted I was underwhelmed. I think my worst comment was that it would likely open up a lot more Saturdays for other activities. Frankly, after 15 years of incompetence, no matter the hire I was just about checked out.

To his credit, Heupel has me believing again.

I am not going back to look but I think my response was "At least he has head coaching experience" that is what I had against the last head coach.

Couldn't resist.

I made several positive posts about Butch early in 2016. I made several positive Pruitt posts 2018 to about mid September of 2020 though.

Dude, I think a lot of us wanted so desperately to believe in those days that we just relied on pure hope. I supported all the hires in the early stages. My weakest support/hope/expectations were for Kiffen; strongest were for Pruitt. Most indifferent were for Heupel. Look at how I’ve been educated.

I don't care. It violates the forum rules but not worth reporting. A lot of us were so disappointed that no hire would have been good. I have enjoyed the past 2 seasons after I vented a little while in 2021.

I mean, welcome to one of the reasons to post on a message board, I guess. Extreme reactions to games, hirings, firings, recruiting, transfers, off the field incidents, and lest we forget, what planes are landing at TYS comprise some of the most fun you will have on a forum like this.

It's generally all in good fun to prove naysayers wrong when you finally have data to back up arguments that take place during the initial wave of emotion.

Besides, if we take a step back next year people will bump pro-Heupel ones all over again. 😂

I saw potential in Heupel.
I was intrigued by his offense, but was lukewarm over all.
I knew we had the right man against Pitt.
I realized I felt confident again. Hadn't done that since 2007.

Why? Did you issue this kind of response to all the Chicken Littles that are having their posts bumped? If you have the "courage" to say it... then have the courage to own it. I think a few guys have done the right thing and said, "Dish up my crow". Those are guys who've likely learned to show a little patience before having their hissy fit in public. Others... are deflecting and blaming others for bringing up what are now pretty idiotic looking posts.

I was "wait and see" mostly because UT had had such a poor record of managing coaches which included the last half of Fulmer's tenure. But if you were looking at resumes... his was better than anyone UT had hired since Fulmer was fired. If there was a hire that deserved "wait and see" out of that group... it was him.

Unless my memory fails me, the reaction to Heupel was more negative than the reaction to Jones... and Jones was a complete joke. His "record" was as thin as tissue. He beat a bunch of losers at Cincy... that was his resume.
It’s funny because I hated the Jones hire (but jumped on board) and then although I admit I wasn’t ecstatic with Heupel, I wasn’t against it. I saw it as a high risk but high reward gamble that the program had to take since anyone else would’ve been a retread or equally risky gamble.

NOPE..... we need to insure that there are lessons learned for making declarative statements when discretion is an option. Real questions, not snarky rhetorical ones, were available as well. If they made them they just need to man up and take their medicine. OH I almost forgot, I hope I am wrong!!!!!!!!!!!

When that picture came out, I never actually looked at her face. Looking at it now, it was a premonition of what was going to happen. Doesn’t look really happy to be there does she? IMO she couldn’t wait to get out of town.

Knoxville wasn’t the problem. She was having to deal with Joey Freshwater. I’d be depressed too having to deal with that scumbag.

We all say dumb stuff and we need to be reminded of it... heck, I have posted at least 2 drunk and not well-thought-out, knee-jerk comments between beers this past week alone. If you can't take it getting shoved in your face later don't post it.

I was all for hiring Heupel, so include me out.
Same here. The only people upset about resurrecting old posts are those who came in with piping hot takes and then don’t want to own it two years later. I think it’s great to look back and remember the know-it-alls who actually didn’t.
