Good horror?

For just plain horror without trying to be funny:

The Thing
The Void
Color Out of Space
The Autopsy of Jane Doe

After that some off the top of my head that I have enjoyed:
Dog Soldiers, Evil Dead 1/2/3(Army of Darkness), Return of the Living Dead, Dead Alive (Braindead), Street Trash, Train to Busan, Re-Animator, The Fly.

Color Out of Space is a new one to me. I’ll check it out. Thanks!

Dead Alive (Braindead)
It's a really fun horror/comedy (zombie flick) with a creepy, low-budget charm to it, that some directors (like Peter Jackson) know how to pull off.

Having said that, it's an acquired taste.

It's obnoxious. I came away from it wishing they had focused at least a little bit on the girl .... and developed the relationship a little. Instead, it gets carried away with becoming a redundant gore-fest at the end. I still really like it. I think it could have been better.

Also : It's been ripped off a lot over the years by less talented filmmakers.

Lawnmower zombie kill scene and the ninja priest sealed the deal for me on this movie when I first saw it.

I've always thought The Void was a little underappreciated. It's quite Lovecraft in tone and best I can recall there's not a bit of CGI in the whole thing. The cast isn't stellar but if you wondered what would happen if The Thing and Event Horizon had a baby and that appeals to you I'd look into The Void.

The Babadook is worth checking out if you haven't seen it. I thought it was very good...

Watching the single mom's slow, downward spiral while trying to be there for her child was gut-wrenching.

Also, if you want something with dark humor and a cheesy 80's horror vibe with comically over the top gore, check out Terrifyer 2. I didnt expect much from it, as I didnt care for the first one, but part 2 was far better than it had a right to be and the main female protagonist....damn!

First saw this "turkey" living in Miami in 1980. Yep, it's really dumb.

Saw Evil Dead Rise mentioned and I found a very niche movie that compared well called The Cleansing Hour. Starts off very corny but by the end I was deep into it.

Other suggestions I don't think I saw:

Aniara (subtitles, existential crisis)
The Dark and the Wicked (slow burn)
As Above So Below (Found footage)
Fresh (just watch)
Late Night with the Devil (Shudder original)
Totally Killer (comedy/80s tribute)
No One Will Save You (unique)
Incantation (Taiwan, subtitles)
Anything For Jackson (indie)
Pyewacket (indie)
Bone Tomahawk (Western)
The Girl with All the Gifts (zombie)

Horror is my thing. I've watched the best and worst there is to offer. Plenty more recs if anyone likes these.

Enjoyed Blink Twice which I think was more dark comedy/horror than thriller. Cuckoo was wayyyyyy out there, but I enjoyed it overall. Some very tense scenes.

I've watched that in the last week and Green Room. They are both quality horror. Take hard pass on Longlegs, however.
I've been hearing that about Longlegs, the consensus seems to be it's a decent movie but way over hyped. I'll probably give it a go when it comes to streaming

The Cleansing Hour was surprisingly good. I agree on that one. I’ve seen most of your list but some I haven’t so I’ll circle back and catch them. Thanks for the recs and I’ll be back for more!

Dang. I was hoping LLs would be good.

Have you watched the new Salem’s Lot yet? I think that’ll be next for me. Re-watching Satan’s Slaves at the moment as it has been a while.

The Terror series (1st season) on AMC wasn't too bad. A mix of historical fiction and supernatural horror. I have the book but havent read it..anticipate it being far superior.

When it came on AMC originally I told my dad about it and he said he had already read the book and he liked the book. I liked the series. This doesn't relate at all to what you said, but still.

I’m a huge horror movie fan but struggle to find good horror to watch. Anyone have suggestions?

Also, what are good horror movies made recently? I’ll even say anything in the last 10 years or so. Hereditary is awesome so that’s probably at the top of my list of recent horror movies. What else?
Late to the party just wanted to throw my dime in for October.

If recent isn't a must. Because honestly I find alot of the older Horror movies better. They build more suspense and better stories. Instead of immediately shooting their wad via CGI.

Examples:

Ghost Story (1981) [ Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., John Houseman, Craig Wasson, and Alice Krige.]
(maybe the best gost story I have ever seen)

The Fog” (1980) [Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, Janet Leigh and Hal Holbrook.]
(I mean Jamie Lee and Barbeau in same movie scream queen perfection..stay away from the remake it's trash)

The Shining” (1980) (kind of obvious one you have probably already seen, but in case you haven't.)

Poltergeist (all of em) (Not deep but satisfying, guessing most have seen them but for the younglings that haven't, nice mix of campy, horror, and comedy).

The Exorcist (1973)(You have probably seen it, but it's the classic. There is a reason this is normally everyone's number one scariest movie of all time)

The Omen (1976)(another you likely have seen but if not, similar to exorcist in some ways but instead of abeject horror it's abject dread)

The Wicker Man (1973) (like the six sense don't let anyone tell you about it or how it ends)

An American Werewolf in London (1981) (Best werewolf movie ever made, one of the greatest practical effect movies)

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) Second best werewolf movie ever made...and HOTTIE Monica Bellucci in her prime. More action.

The Witch (2015) (one of the very few modern horror movies that builds the same suspense as classics, well done)

Vampires 1998 (more action then scary, but possibly my favorite vampire movie in that they actually do what you would WANT to do when facing vampires instead of being idiots, and James Woods, and Sheryl Lee make it a campy classic. I just like how it flies in the face of all the usual vampire tropes)

The Thing (1982) (another you probably have seen but just and absolute must see classic, also can be beconsidered Alien series Beta test movie, the other greatest practical effect movie)

Rosemary's Baby (1968) very disturbing, arguably more disturbing now the more we know about Polanski....fiction or documentary? If ya know you know. There are cults that believe this crap.

Don't Look Now (1973) (donald Sutherland, this one deserves to be in the group of classics you have already seen and yet is often overlooked. Well done british horror, and good acting)

Jacobs Ladder (1990) PTSD as horror....Kinda surprised this isn't being talked about again....given our number of vets etc.

The Devils backbone 2001 (Excellent Spanish horror film and ghost story)

Ringu (1998) (you probably have seen it or certainly the memes but one of the best Japanese ghost stories, and they excel at ghost stories)

The Wailing (2016) (Korean ghosts story more dark comedy then horror, but very good)

The Sixth Sense (1999) I assume everyone have seen this one, I don't know anyone who hasn't at this point, but none the less for the 1% who haven't seen it, see it before it's ruined for you.

The Vanishing (1988) (More thriller then horror, but a great french suspense movie with disturbing nature, before the 6th sense this was the one that could be most ruined if someone told you ending....dont ask just watch)

[REC] (2007) Really good Spanish horror film more in the zombie camp. Jump scares done well...the best non zombie, zombie film.

I dunno just some I like.....

Good list for sure. Watch Hereditary. It’s a good one that’s recent.

I saw one recently that is slow and weird but I actually like it. Handling the Undead. If you like slow builds and suspense I think you’ll like it.
