Government Mule's Official and Authentic Game Thread LV's vs Miss State

We have zero margin of error among our starters. If any one of them is shooting poorly or is injured, we are through. We got 4 points from our bench today vs M St's 25 points. We shot 30% today as a team, we also had only 6 assists against 17 turnovers. It was amazing that we were in the game late in the 4th quarter.
It's the double whammy, no discernable offensive system combined with a team full of below average shooters equals losses against competent teams. We can play defense but offense seems to be a foreign concept to our team.

We could not get in any flow just how ms state wanted when we were up by one point we should have called a timeout and said relax. Get a stop and rebound we come down and let shafer just hit a three horrible

Onward we go need to win on the road at Ole Miss season going to be a struggle to get to the NCAA tourney think we need eight more wins.
Ole Miss a lot better than they've been in a while will need to play a lot better than we did today.

Wins against Stanford and UK will get them there provided they don't implode in the SEC.

I expect them to lose to MS in the rematch and SC, with potential losses to Auburn, Ole Miss, TAMU and LSU, but they should comfortably make the field of 64.

Realistically I think we could win our remaining games minus the MS rematch, SC, and Notre Dame. Unfortunately that may not give us any more wins vs. ranked opponents, unless Auburn or A&M are able to sneak into the top 25 at some point. Winning today would have given us a potential huge bump in our NCAAT seeding, though.

If the starters continue to play well, cut down on unforced turnovers, and they can get some contribution off the bench against good teams, they can make the tourney.

This was a prime example of why Warlick is a lousy coach. In the second quarter, DD started throwing up shots and missing, then in the second half it was more of the same wit her and Nared. We didn't run an offense. Nared gets the ball on the perimeter and tries to drive past three people and get to the rim. Uh, not going to work. And how many times did she do that in the 2nd half--three or four times. At some point, you, the coach, have to impart to the team the necessity to run plays, set picks, pass the ball, get EASY shots, not off-balance shots after 1v1. Didn't do it. I said it earlier this week, I've said it for years--our offense sux, and until we get a real staff, we will remain a mediocre, underachieving program.

While I agree with you that we should make NCAA's, the problem is that if we are not in the top 16, it could be one win and then a game against one of the top 8 seeds on the road.

hearing a comment like this in the past? Here we are with four or five highly ranked recruits, and we're hoping just to make the tourney.

Barring an implosion and losing to some really horrible teams, TN isn't in any danger of not making the tournament. We are #10 in the RPI right now. Last year we lost back to back to sorry ass LSU and Bama and we still weren't really in that big a danger of not making the tournament.

I don't disagree re: our offense (except for the first quarter, where we actually exploited the MS defense well, I thought), but I do think part of the strategy today was (clearly) to get to the line and get MS in foul trouble. Both DD and Nared were subpar shooting from the field but were aggressive and combined for an impressive 21-23 at the foul line.

They weren't going to do much in the tournament anyway. S16 likely, maybe E8 with a good draw.

As good as Diamond, Mercedes and Jaime are, they can't carry the team against the better teams if there is no consistent production from the guard spots.

I see Ole Miss is 12-3 on the year. We may struggle w/them too.

Ole Miss is playing Auburn on the SEC Network now.

Both teams have aggressive scoring guards, which is the bane for Tennessee.

The Auburn PG in particular would eat Jordan alive.

This game was lost in the second quarter, because soon as Jordan went out everything went sideways. Jumper you said you worked with Lex and she got better, but by the look of it she's the same from last year and her ball handling has regressed. She's going to get eaten alive going forward that pressure D is going to be too much for her, if she doesn't get out of her own head. If Lex, MeMe, Diamond, Jaime, and Cedes are in the game the only player I'd have confidence handling the ball out from the basket is Russell, maybe MeMe too, which is just sad.

This is absolutely the truth.

On a side note, watching Ole Miss game now. When looking at their center, all I can hear in my head is, "That b*tch is HUGE!"

Then her backup came in and she's even bigger. Do they not have a sports nutritionist?

I pity Mercedes for when she has to navigate that sea of flesh.

It's hard to believe that we actually had a chance to win this game with 2.30 or whatever it was left. We were absolutely terrible offensively in the last three quarters--looked like last year. Only the fact that Miss. State was called for a ton of fouls kept us in it--we've got 30 points from the line. And, fans, Miss. State is not that good: Vivians is an outstanding athlete with skills--but she's like DD--misses a ton of shots. They've got a big center who's not bad, but other than they don't seem special. They do play hard and are better coached than we are. You don't have to be a genius to out-coach our staff--let's just say that. In terms of prospect talent on the floor, we had more of it--but our coaching is awful. This was a vivid example of why will never win anything.

We didn't have a single three-point shot in this game (unless it came in the last 20 seconds). You can't beat a solid/good team without making some treys. DD played hard, made some plays defensively, scored some points, but she was not good: Again, erratic; again, too many missed shots, and was really lucky not to be called for at least one charge. Nared was horrible--tried to do too much, forced shots, missed shots. Our offense from the midway point of the 2nd period on was a joke--basically DD and Nared throwing up a lot of contested or off-balance shots. Did not get enough out of Reynolds, as usual. Warlick should have given Russell a blow in the first half--don't think she did--and she got tired and that was a big reason Miss. state rallied at the end of the first half. Poor game management. Nunn should be playing FOR Russell, not with her. Yea, we're strong inside with both on the floor--but Russell needs some rest. An ugly game all around.

I agree with many of your points ....the exception is your proclamation that State is not a very good team .When essentially their bench can keep them in the game and even take the lead in 2nd QTR ,I submit that State is a very good team and time will tell but they just may be an Elite 8 or better team. They have size inside ,a very good point guard and have an All American scorer in Vivian which to me translates into at least the 2nd best team in SEC .....anxious to see how they fare against South Carolina because they have enough size and depth in the post to give them fits.
