Grading the new CFB hires....

Sumlin to Arizona is a completely irrelevant hire. Just above average coach at a school that never hits the college football radar.

Slightly better version of Butch.

Good recruiter but bad coach.

WTH is Greg Schiano!?!?!?!? Herbstreit and pretty much the entire college football world screamed how stupid we were and we end up in the top ten? How does that begin to make sense? It makes sense because we did the right thing by squashing that hire and getting Pruitt.

This is very true. But it's the off-season and rankings of any kind get fans talking...or arguing.

Pretty much.

That and some mid-summer speculation or rumors about conference expansion/realignment are pretty much a given to be written about in the modern offseason.

Still doesn't change the fact, Sumlin used the talent he had and made the most of it. butch wasted over half the talent he had and Dobbs saved his ass more than a couple of times.

And what exactly did Sumlin accomplish when Manziel left besides getting canned?

What did butch accomplish? Sumlin with Manziel had more quality wins and Manziel got the damn Heisman. What did butch accomplish with Dobbs. butch won the BoB and acted like he won the NC.

I know you were all butch for a long time. You don't have to keep protecting him.

oh and when Dobbs left, butch turned in the Tennessee's first 8 loss season. Again, keep defending mr. trumpet blower.

WTH? We’re talking about Sumlin.. what does Butch have anything to do with this?

Sumlin took advantage of having a good QB who can make plays out of nothing.

Butch just happened to be a worse coach who couldn’t develop his players.

There’s nobody “Protecting Butch”. So dumb.

Is your memory that short? It's only a few posts up. You're the one who brought him into the conversation.

So before you call someone dumb, make sure you know what you're talking about.

Ok how about this....

Both are good recruiters but below average coaches that got fired from their previous jobs without the help of their previous good QBs (Dobbs, Manziel)

That’s pretty much what I’ve been trying to explain to you while you was too busy accusing me of protecting Butch.

You’ve been here long enough to know there’s nobody on this board cutting Butch some slack for the way he ran things around here.

How many bad coaches have beaten Saban at Bama?

Charlie Weatherbie from La Monroe has to be the worst. Sylvester Croom at Miss St, is the other one. Possibly Tuberville but he wasn't horrible. Sumlin is average, Miles,Malzahn, Freeze, Meyer,Stoops,Wittingham,Dabo,Spurrier,Bowden and Richt speak for themselves.

Who could have been hired to make us #1 on this list?

Patterson
Petersen
Kelly

Any of the three were possible with our money and would easily put us at #1. Chip Kelly in the SEC would constantly be in the news cycle and have been huge for our recruiting momentum.

The problem is our fans don’t believe it’s possible. They’ll make any excuse to give the UTAD a pass. “Ain’t no way Coach X would come here because ______.” Money makes it possible and we have plenty of it. Somehow the school has made us collectively set low expectations for the program.

Do you ever change your tune?

Can you not see an obvious compliment? Pruitt’s the highest rated non HC experience guy on their list. They think well of him and I’m agreeing with them. He doesn’t deserve to be any higher because he hasn’t coached a game as a HC in college football. Being ahead of Morris is a pretty big deal, too.

You know nothing. Props for never letting that stop you. :hi: I know...”stalking”. :shades:

I guarantee Fulmer is very serious about winning. Neyland, Fulmer, Dabo,Fisher, Stoops,Coker, Switzer,
V.Dooley,Carr,Paterno,Osborne,
Mccartney,L.Edwards,J.Robinson,D.Ford,J.Mckay,S. Jordan,B.Wilkinson were all 1st time HC's that won National Championships at their first school. Plus throw in what Smart, Richt,Peterson,Frost,C.Kelly,B. Alvarez,G Patterson, J.Franklin,D. Shaw,M. Gundy,L.Riley and others that were/are very successful 1st time HC's. You don't have to get a guy with previous HC success to succeed.

And some people don't understand this or refuse to. Yes,a lot of first time head coaches fail but a lot of experienced one do also. It's all about timing and the right situation.

<blue font> Meanwhile ADs are lining up all over the country to hire Schiano after the 2018 season ends, they can't wait to get this guy on their payroll and start the winning!!

My astonishment remains to this day (obviously) this guy got pushed on us as a great hire by UTAD and the press in general. He must have pictures of Herbstreit wearing thigh highs, a corset, in a bedroom with a can of peaches, a slinky, and a goat.

Herbie is a OSU Alum. So of course he is going to push a guy he has strong ties with. Honestly Schiano without the Penn State ties is not a bad hire. Not sure how he would have fit in the SEC though.
