Greatest hip-hop/rap album of all-time?

I am a rocker, so let me be up front.

But when it is time to listen to rap, I mostly play Kanye West.

Best EVER to me, a rocker, mind you is Chronic and Chronic 2001.

2001 shaking the house right now, playing guitar with it. "F you" on 2001 is my song!

But man, 2001, no skipping tracks in my house.

By the way Eminem is overrated...that doesn't mean that he isn't good, cause he is but if he weren't white he wouldn't have been half of what he became...the constant barrage on boy bands and Brittney were silly...most of his hits were jokes, literally, the song itself was a joke. not that hits matter in the best of all time list.

I would say that he is easily top 30 and arguably top 20.

Wrong. Eminem in his prime could smoke any rapper in his way. He did become famous because he was white, and a lot of his hits and music videos made him look like a joke, but if you listen to his albums he is the most personal rapper of all time. you can listen to entire eminem album and know everything about him by the end of it. He's never scared to say anything, and that mixed with the fact that he's white made him look like a joke in a lot of peoples eyes. The problem was that nobody ever took him seriously... because he was white!! But on pure talent alone, give me slim shady any day.

You are either very young or you haven't heard a lot of rap.

Just because he spills the beans on his entire life doesn't make him the best.

I have named several guys who are just on another level and Eminem isn't there, nor will he ever be.

Yeah, I like Em but with rappers like Aesop, Slug, MURS, Del, and Q-tip in the mix... there's no way one such as he could even sniff the butts of those guys.

Digital Underground Sex Packet was a winner. Lots of good stuff with little filler.

Sorry if I had to make the younger wangsters google it.

I dont have grey hairs if thats what your saying.. So yeah, call me young. Im not sure what that even has to do with being a rap fan though, because I was under the impression that most hip hop is intended for young people. Also some of the most creative rap albums ever made were made by young people. (2Pac - All Eyez On Me [Age 24], Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die [Age 23] just to name a few). Maybe your a little too old and stuck in your ways to see the light.

Im not necessarily saying that Eminem is the best ever. I have not listened to every rap album ever made, and neither have you. Im just saying that many people form an image of him in their minds before ever really digging into his lyrics. I don't even necessarily know if he's my favorite, but he's in the discussion for sure. You just kind of disregarded him earlier on the board, and i felt like somebody needed to step in and give him honorable mention. Feel free to never listen to him if you want, but he is one of the elite, whether you like it or not.

LL and Run DMC are the only ones that I could see myself ranking ahead of him.

I would add Rakim, the rest are up for debate as far as I'm concerned. I never really cared for LL but I respect the fact that he helped shape the genre.

Eminem has not made a record that could stand next to some of the all-time greats. He just hasn't.

You said he could smoke any rapper you put in front of him, I will go ahead and imply that you think he is the best or at the very least as good as anyone. Which he isn't.

If you don't think that that his race had a lot to do with his success, you're crazy. He's good but he's not that good.

I'm 26 brosef...not too old. Old enough to have heard some of the best ever, obviously you haven't been so fortunate.

Are you serious?

You don't think Nas is better than 50 Cent? Or do you not know anything about Nas?

Mobb Deep could lyrically assassinate 50, he was about the 5th or 6th best emcee in G-Unit, he is a total pop-star.

We have our wires crossed. I was simply saying Rakim has to be put on the top five list. I agree 50 has no business there JMO though. I'm indifferent on Nas, never really got into him.

I listen to a little rap but not as much as I did when I was younger.

In my opinion Nas is King, not just of NY but rap overall, he is the best that I have ever heard and I have heard a ton of rap.

With that said, Lupe is making a very strong run, if he continues, he could very well overtake Nas but he will have to record for another 10 years to do so.

Thanks... brosef (I guess). Yes Ido think he is either the best or at least as good as anyone. That doesn't necessarliy mean he is my favorite. It kinda changes from day to day. Right not im on a pretty heavy Biggie Smalls kick. But I certainly wouldn't feel bad if I had Eminem in his prime in any sort of "battle."

Please notice that this is MY opinion, which I am entitled to, and you do not have to agree with. This argument could drag on for days. He's really good, no he isn't.. blah blah blah. I'm not really trying to convince you of anything, and honestly I think I said all I wanted about how good I think he is. But yeah I'll certainly work on trying to become more "rap cultured" like you apparently already are.

It is pretty obvious I am more cultured on rap.
I was listening to Ready To Die when it came out, so that puts me about 16 years ahead of you.

This is a debate, you cannot convince me otherwise on any subject, same for you, not the point, I would like to know why you think he is so great.

You really should admit that his race had a lot to do with his overall success. There is really no denying that.

As far as a battle goes, who knows, he never battles anyone good.

Benzino? Nick Cannon? Brittney Spears? N'SYNC? Jermaine Dupri? Not really the who's who of emcees, wouldn't you say?

IMO the state of rap/hip hop is very low today. Nothing like it was in the 80's and 90's and the first third or so of the 2000's. Don't get me wrong there have been some good songs made but the crap that dominates now is worthless IMO.

I heard Pit Bull on some mixed tapes around 2003 (?) and had high hopes but he disappointed.

Mainstream rap is awful.
