Ground zero mosque.

This is a pointless debate. A certain segment of our population has already bought into the notion that 9/11 was born purely out of religious belief, as opposed to a warped and manipulated view of religious belief. Thoe that buy into that view think that an overwhelming number of Muslims are terrorists, or at least terrorist sympathizers, and so every thing Muslims do, be it a mosque near the site of 9/11 or a picnic in Los Angeles, will be viewed with suspicion and alarm.

Such ignorance and simple mindedness is not a knew phenomenon. We see it every time a group misuses a religion or a nationality or a race to tie themselves together and hurt someone else. Eventually, sane people win out and things calm down and people can see more clearly that a thing like 9/11 was a result of a bastardization of Islam by political extremists, as opposed to compelled by the Quran.

But people have to grow up and come to that realization somewhat on their own. For now, they must wallow in their ignorance and snap-to whenever the fear mongers on our own religious right tell them to. They don't realize that the real enemy here is extremism in ANY religion and the reactionary forces within Christianity that are telling them this is a religious war are as much a threat to world peace as their couterparts in the Mid-East and parts of Africa, Europe, and Asia.

I'm actually on the fence in this particular instance but if it is true that this particular Imam refuses to call denounce Hamas (a terrorist organization) then wouldn't it validate the argument that he is a terrorist sympathizer?

Depends a lot on what he said and the context. But even if he was a terrorist sympathizer, I would argue that puts him in the camp of those that have manipulated the religion to suit their own ends, as opposed to someone that is giving you an accurate view of the religion as seen by billions who practice it.

The fact that he is an Imam doesn't mean he is incapable of selfguile on the issue.

I'm seeing fringe nut cults but not denominations. I'm not comparing racist, murdering, Nazi sympathizers to Christian denominations.

I'm not seeing heads of state and mass demonstrations in various nations espousing the views of the Christian Identity and Aryan Nations. I'm not seeing thousands of US and other nations' troops fighting in the hills of Idaho and Oregon.

Look. Extreme Islamists commit terrorism - fact. Extreme Christians commit terrorism = fact.

Simple enough?

How dare I generalize but I compare reactions around the Muslim world after 9/11 and the results coming from that and then compare reactions after an abortion clinic is bombed or a doctor is shot. Call it a stretch but the differences are astounding.

To say it's not as bad because their murders get less attention is silly.

The difference is no true Christian celebrates when an abortion doctor is killed, even though we disagree with what he/she is doing. The Muslim world celebrated on Sept. 11, 2001

Not simple enough. Good Muslims commit terrorism. And where are all of these acts of terror committed by Christians in the name of Christianity?

And to think that is what I said is as silly. As I said, when the "extremist Muslim" does something, I see a much different reaction from the Muslim community than I do from when a " extremist Christian" does something and the reaction from the Christian community. I think the "extreme" in Islam is far greater than some give credit for. Someone does not have to strap C4 to their chest to go dancing in the streets by the thousands and be an extremist. As well as one does not have to publicly dance in the streets as well. But comparing reaction versus reaction in numbers and the measured 'extremist' reaction in Islam is far greater than in Christianity.
