Gun control debate (merged)

I haven't been to a range in a bit, but I do have a trip planned. you can come along if you promise to behave and follow the safety instructions.
Got a range just four miles down the road here. As for your invite, nope. Got suckered once by such a similar challenge four years ago. Guy shows up with six of his pals, not a one on one as promised. One showing off his open carry. I was smart enough to anticipate the ploy, so had four buddies staying back in two cars as reserves. It ended there when Mr. Open Carry saw them heading his way, jackets pulled back to show their conceals. Since then, Homie don't play dat.

sounds like a bad hombre.

reminds me of when some other bad guys blocked my car in until I paid them. thankfully a good samaritan with a conceal carry helped out. can't think of a time the government has similarly bailed me out, can actually think of two where it left me and mine to rot in bad spots.

The give and take betwixt us not withstanding, I retreat you endured such treatment. Our country is literally infected with Karen women and men, Only months ago, while at a grocery store, a pale azzed bassard, approached with a gun while I was opening my car to leave the parking lot. He insisted I was stealing the car because was obviously too expensive a vehicle for me to be able to afford it. My inclination was to rush the ***, but instead I pressed the horn button on my fob, and kept it pressed while getting in the car. Eventually, driving off. This is just one of several experiences I've had with genuine A-holes, so I'm serious when I say I regret you experienced what you did. Plus, I have seen others subjected to various jackass behaviors, including one where I revved my engine threatening a guy harassing a woman accompanied by two kids. Had he not baked off from them, I would have run him over. Some of the stuff I'm seeing these days, I honestly think guys peacock strutting around with their open carries, as if auditioning for a western movie or TV show, should use their time to hunt the Karens and jackasses who do such things. Seriously, stay safe, man.

From what I've seen in this forum just about everyone is at least ambivalent towards OC* with most considering it anywhere from impractical to tactically undesirable.

*In this context I mean "extended carry in generally normal social situations".

True. Our number one problem is we have so many mentally unstable people, people whose brains are forked up from illicit and even prescriptive drug use, and the usual fringe, and extreme characters, we don't know who is fit and unfit for OC. Some countries have a serious pre-evaluation before will even consider you being approved to own a gun at all. The USA ducks this under the 2nd Amendment. In Germany, for example, has stringent regulations on firearm acquisition. They require background checks, psychological evaluations, and a valid reason for ownership. Germany prioritizes public safety and ensures that individuals with a history of violence or mental health issues are restricted from owning firearms. We Muricans just sidestep such efforts to public safety, and we're paying the price on a daily basis.

You should MOVE!

Maybe we should concentrate on discipline and quit manufacturing mental illness.

I don't buy into most of the metal illness stuff myself. People know right from wrong, but most don't care. We're devolving. And I do believe discipline is at the core. My first step would be to dilute the power of over-reaching social workers. They take the power to even be a parent away from you. I think it's so bad, they have created an environment in which it seems your kid can haul you to court a for farting instead on sneezing.

I'll still take freedom, even dangerous freedom, over any kind of government control to the level espoused here. OTOH I'd be much more willing to listen to cranking up the penalties. For instance look up what these other countries do to people that actually break the law and compare it to this approach.

There is a LOT we can do to address criminal activity that doesn't include putting the screws Joe Citizen.

Awaiting your solution.

Total solution? That's way too expansive. There was one big one right in the post you quoted. Here's more.

You and I both know there's LOTS more where this came from with varying degrees of severity. If we can't get a handle on things at even this level the rest is twaddle.

Well, as I said in another post, it's futile. There is no way out of it. We have devolved so much, we're too gutless and unwilling to do what's necessary. So there's no solution. Which is why i quote Kipling. Humans are inherently destructive and self-destructive.

Have no truck with the senseless thing.
Order the guns and kill!

Once there was The People--Terror gave them birth;
Once there was The People and they made a Hell of Earth
Earth arose and crushed them.
Listen, 0 ye slain!
Once there was The People--they shall never be again!

You've set yourself a bit of a contradiction. For instance you cited Germany earlier. Even assuming they had a 2A how do you think they'd handle people like the two I posted about? Think somebody in Germany would be strolling around after their 6th(!) firearm felony? Words like "fixed" or "solution" aren't terribly useful in broad multi-faceted scenarios. Deciding we're not going to be so accepting of recidivism when dealing with violence and weapons isn't a "solution" but neither is it some great and mighty cultural accomplishment. In any case addressing that part of the equation should come way before all the histrionic wailing about inanimate objects so often heard.

SIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cited Germany as an example of how we Muricans don't have the guts to make a serious effort to implement any form of gun control. And this isn't the first time I've said there is no out of the current daily BANG, BANG, BANG in our society. Nor the first time I've quoted Kipling as to why. I don't runaround in circles, I call the spade, kettle, pot, etc for what it is. And most folks don't like it, the things is I don't care. History and on-going realities back me up whether others want to acknowledge it or not. If you review my other posts, you'd see that more than once, I've said if hostile extraterrestrials invaded, I'd be cheering their arrival because we don't have sense enough to get along with each other, to take care of our only planetary home, or anything else. So welcome, Greys, Reptoids, Nords, and Draconians, do your thing.

It doesn't take guts to strip away rights, it takes cowardice.

It puts you in a tough spot to essentially couch the problem as "people" and then make reference to those outside the US. If they can nut up so can we. Now that's not me saying (not even a little bit) that cowardice and political expediency isn't a factor in the US. It absolutely is a problem. What I driving at is I'm absolutely disinterested in hearing anyone (that's generic, not aimed at you in particular) try to make the discussion primarily about the one thing in the firearm discussion that is completely without will or volition...which is of course the firearms themselves. YMMV but I see no reason for more people that haven't done anything wrong to bend the knee to more infringement when those who unambiguously act out in the very manner you speak of so derisively can, in the worst cases, be practically coddled.
