If he wants to be a head coach, now's the time. If Vandy is his best offer, he should probably take it.

The Auburn offense will go from explosive to average in a hurry without Newton next year. Malzahn's stock could plummet, and he'd be stuck as a coordinator for a program facing potential ncaa probation.

just like Greg Schiano, after he stuck around Rutger's a few years ago

You never hear his name mentioned anymore

If you don't think this is true, just ask Gerry DiNardo. He parlayed 19 wins in four years into a gig at LSU.

But DiNardo lucked into that. He was plan B, after the initial coach LSU hired(Pat Sullivan) could not get out of his current contract at the time.

Can you imagine the uproar today if an SEC school like LSU (who really, really sucked back then) couldn't get a buyout done to get the coach they wanted?

it would seem crazy to most of us but he seems to be a guy of character. He's no Kiffin..meaning he's not going to up and leave them high and dry after a year

He's been at MSST 2 year - not one. I know that's small, but it may be easier to leave after 2 years than after 1 year. It may not make him feel like a "Kiffin" as bad.

Ken Niumatalolo getting any serious consideration?

According to Plaster and the Zone in Nashville, he seems to be the second choice after Malzahn. There is supposedly an interview which had to wait until after today, and the zone conclude it must be Niumatalolo since Navy is the only game today.

He was still an option they considered. Also, Bobby Johnson could have had a shot with Clemson if he hadn't told them he had no interest.

If you are going to run the triple option in the SEC, Vandy IS NOT the place to try and experiment with it.
I disagree. I think the Flexbone would be a perfect fit at a place like Vandy.

Not to be the first school. It might work, mostly because you are right, nobody else runs it. But I just don't think Vandy can recruit good enough players.

That is the reason you run it. You don't have to recruit amazing players for it.

Why in the world would a guy riding as high as Malzahn take the Vandy job?

Malzhan is one of those coaches that can win more with less...He could change things around and make Vandy dangerous...Not really a contender but he could be that coach they have needed there for a long time...I like him and think he's going to be a brilliant head coach once he gets his wheels under him.

I agree, that style of offense is designed for teams with less talent....Could be a big pain in the rear to defend too.

Its funny to (again) read Auburn's fans on this, they act like Mahlzan will be OC at Auburn for life....

3 mill is 3mill. he would have job security and would get at least 5 years. vandy already plays ut, ky, usc, ole miss, and msu tight every year. imagine vandy scoring 28 points a game. they would be an instant bowl team every year. fighting for 3rd in the east is surpassing ky and looking at passing ut and usc.

With Mullen and Petrino staying put, it seems that Malzahn will be the Vandy coach.

So with Petrino staying and Muschamp in Florida does Gus now take the Vandy job?

i bet Gus hands were shaking so hard he could barely dial the numbers to Vandy's AD...lol
