Why is nobody bringing up Gus Malzahn as a possible hire? The guy has big success everywhere he has been and his offense is proven to work well in the SEC. I know we all want Gruden, but if we can't get him I think Malzahn would be a good hire.

NO.

I will never understand the fascination with Malzahn.

Nutt hires him, more or less, to bring in the Springdale kids. He leaves soon after because he and Nutt differ about Nutt relying on the ground game (Nutt is Nutt, but it was completely reasonable considering they had McFadden, F. Jones, and P. Hillis).

Goes to Tulsa with Todd Graham (Not a positive) and slings the ball around the CUSA.

Moves to Auburn after 2 years.

OC's 2 8-5 seasons before and after Cam's Year.

Not a fan. At all.

I have to wonder if he, like Chizik, just rode the amazing coat tails of Cam Newton.

Yeah, he's only been a HC for 9 games now. Too little experience to judge. Plus, as noted, his wife is a sideshow we don't need.

That said, I like him. I'd take him over any of the fired-coach-retreads that keep getting brought up (Tuberville, Davis, Cutcliffe, etc.). He's had success everywhere he's been and he's young and I think he's got potential. But there are other guys that fit that criteria too, with more HC experience (like Butch Jones, Sonny Dykes, Mark Hudspeth, etc.). If we were doing a real search and not just a "boosters go offer money to people they've seen on TV" thing, then I think it would be worth interviewing him.

That team would have been 6 and 6 without Cam.

That's weird, because Malzahn's never coached a college team that finished with less than 8 wins.

Arkansas placed 1st in the West the one year he was their OC (which is the last time they've won their division)

Tulsa won double digit games and had one of the top rated offenses in the nation both years he was their OC (finishing as the 2nd highest scoring offense of all time his second year there)

As noted, at Auburn, they won the National Championship in his 2nd year as OC.

Sure, Newton was a big part of it, but you can't argue that Malzahn didn't have a hand in it as well. I don't know if he's the right fit for us or if he's ready to be a HC in the SEC, but there's no deying the guy has won everywhere he's been.

Man, you're obsessed with the oregon/pot connection these days. I suspect alot of the business is migrating to the great state of Colorado right about now.

Unfortunately, I'm not actually in Oregon anymore. Great place, but not as much pot around as there was when I lived in Tallahassee.

Yeah, you are right! I was out there for the first time in September. The little coffee huts every mile along the roadways messed with my mind. The whole place looked like hippie haven. I cant wait to move there!

Sorry, I will try to refrain in the future

Ok, lets say we toss the Cam year out since it looks more and more like an outlier as every week passes.

What, really, has Malzahn won?

His impact at Arkansas is 2006 is debateable, Tulsa ran up yards and points...in CUSA, and his Auburn years sans Cam were nothing special.

Yeah, I lived in Portland. Loads of hippie types all around. I didn't like the city so much (though there was some great stuff there too), but the coast was just spectacular. I really miss it.

Well, if we're taking out the Cam year, then we're talking about Malzahn being an OC for 5 years, placing 1st in the SEC west one year. Then, having two years where his offense finished at the top of the nation and finished second (of all time) in scoring. Then two years where he coached an SEC team (an SEC team which had a losing record the year before he got there and a losing record the year after he left) to two 8 win seasons, while bringing in top rated recruiting classes.

Even if you take out the NC year (which is silly), Malzahn still accomplished more in 5 years than just about any OC out there.

I think Gus would be a great hire at UT...He certainly would build a powerful offense here...Get him a good DC and he would really get in the hunt.

I'd take Jackson Harris over Dooley at this point. Malzahn would be interesting.

That's what I'm saying. Plus he won't be a big time money hire so we could still afford to go out at grab a top level dc.

He won a national championship at Auburn. Chizik surely didn't do it--Auburn plummeted when he left. Malzahn wins everywhere he goes. He makes players look better than they really are. If we can't have Gruden, I like Malzahn a lot.

Cam Newton won a NC at Auburn. Doubt they would have went 6-6 without him.
