Gus Malzahn

Since we can't get Gruden, then Malzahn would be my choice, he turned around Houston Nutt's team right off the bat, he led the nation in total offense at Tulsa, won a NC with Auburn, 8 and 3 this year at Arky St., with 2 of the losses at Nebraska and Oregon, he's not been a HC very long but this guy knows how to get it done.

If We can't get Petrino or Davis then by all means go after Malzahn...We could do a lot worse.

My husband (auburn fan) received a text about an hour ago and it said expect Malzahn to be named HC at auburn within a few days. We live in Alabama and this text was from my husbands boss who is a small booster at auburn and also owns a local radio station. TIFWIW but I personally don't see it happening since he was employed there during the Cam scandal, especially since they are about to get hammered by the NCAA. I also don't think he would be a great fit at UT either

Malzahn is a great coach and would do well in the SEC. However, he really seems to like being at Arkansas State and I wouldn't be shocked at all if he stayed there long term.

Malzahn seems to be a very good coach. He would be a gamble, but in his first year he won the sun belt, and the team seemed to get better every week. He just rolled Middle TN state 45-0. If we miss on the can't miss type coaches, we could do a lot worse. I would rather roll the dice on him than a mediocre safe hire.

Malzahn would be as good a hire as we could get. Great offensive mind and a very good recruiter. If he lands back at Auburn they will be a 8-9 win team next year. I want the best coach not the biggest name.

My memory was that he and Nutt butted heads and Nutt basically assigned Gus to fetching coffee while Nutt ran his offense and called plays. Of course we see how that worked out. He then went to Tulsa and the magic started happening.
Someone said he was a good recruiter, but not sure what that is based on. My thoughts are that he bolted Auburn because he was witness to all the cheating, and he is laying low at Ark.St. till the mess passes.
Ark.St. was already a strong program at that level when he took over.

Speaking of Red Wolves,

I know his HC experience is lacking a bit, but talk about well respected. I'm actually blown away he wasn't Arky's first choice... Heck I'd much rather have him than Fedora or Golden...

Flame away!

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realize this thread was already here. Thanks, mods, for merging!

I live in NE AR and word here is that he has made long term commitment to ASU and intends on keeping his word. I know money talks, but word is he really wants to try to take ASU to the next level.

HDN suckered Malzann to be OC so that Arky could sign the Fayetteville five. If your remember, Mitch Mustain (Parade all american) decommited from the Hogs and was begging for an offer from ND. By getting Gus as OC, Mustain re-committed, Damian Williams and Ben Cleveland switched from UF to UA. Once all the players signed on with UofA, HDN did not follow thru w. his promise (to the players and parents) of implement Gus' offense. At the end of that year, there was a mutiny by the parents in the local media. Gus was used as a pawn by HDN to sign recruits. This was the main reason Nutt was chased out of Arkansas. Part of the continuing disgrace known as Arky football. :the_finger:

I would have been happy with Gus, tbh. My wishes for mobility at qb and using the whole field to where out the D would have been met.

Lulz @ Chizik for being fired and replaced by his old OC! Double Lulz @ Auburn for thinking Malzahn will cure their ills! He won't be bringing Cam back!

Great Hire IMO. It was going to be hard for them to pull a big name proven HC with their current situation. NCAA could drop the hammer on them at anytime. I think Gus will do well there. He did not have Cam at Arkansas State and was doing well.

He's a great hire. Look back at all of the offenses he's coached over the years. McFadden and Felix Jones at Arkansas, Cam Newton, hell even his High School teams were incredible

Alot of Auburn fans are pissed. He could turn out to be a great hire, but who really knows. Like UT, we wanted and needed a proven winner and instead we get more of the same from the administration. They came out and said that there was going to be a "national search and money would be no issue" and we only interview Malzahn and Kirby Smart. Hopefully UT can pull through with a good hire because Auburn has set themselves up for mediocrity once again. No balls from the top leadership.
