Hamilton says Pearl will be retained even if NCAA suspends Pearl for a year

I agree Pearl should be shown the door if he gets suspended for a year, but Bill Self coming to Tennessee? We couldn't even get Kevin Stallings. He flat out said, 'no'. This time it will be easier because we have a program but we were turned down by everyone we offered worth a crap after every coach we've had leave in my lifetime.

Two things you have now that you didnt then: 1) an athletic department that is willing to pay a big time coach for mens bball 2) a fanbase that is more excited than ever before.

Sidebar: That job is a good job simply because the high tolerance for lack of success. Thats not meant as a jab but in all honesty, BP is worshipped right now and all he has is 1 Elite Eight and some decent records at the end of the season. its not like UK where if you dont make the Final Four every year or so then they start interviewing replacements. It really is a good job now.

Funny, Self admits in his autobiography he probably would have taken the Tennessee job if he had been offered. Stallings didn't take the job because Dickey took a phone call from Tim Floyd sitting in Kevin's house. Stallings had already agreed in principle and started assembling a staff to come to Knoxville. Of course, you've never been one to let facts get in the way of making an inaccurate point.

I'm sure Self would have succeeded at UT, but it would be interesting to see what Stallings could have done here.

Stallings would have done very well here, especially out of the gate. Hell, Green went to the NCAA Tournament four straight years with the talent he inherited. I'm confident Stallings would have done the same and taken those teams deeper into the tournament. It's ironic Stallings was the coach that knocked UT out of the Big Dance Green's first year.

I never knew Stallings would have had the job. I can't stand the guy, but it would be interesting to see how he would have done considering he's been solid at a terrible Vandy program.

Is that what actually happened? I just remember the big disappointment I felt when Kevin O'Neill left, wondering who the hell Jerry green was, and also thinking Tennessee had wasted a tremendous opportunity.

Stallings wasn't the only coach that passed on the job. I wish I could recall the other coaches, but I'm pretty sure Green was the 4th choice. It was even worse after Green was fired.

It must have been if Buzz Peterson was the best choice available.

Although somewhat based in fact, you'll find a lot of revisionist history on here when it comes to our past coaching searches. We might have missed on Self but he also says he "probably" would have taken the job. Just like Stallings. And the other 20 candidates who "probably" considered it, then ultimately turned us down and made two coaching hires in a row a national embarassment for this program.

I was extremely embarassed when Stallings turned us down.

If you think Self wouldn't have taken a ten fold raise to leave Oral Roberts and come to Knoxville, you need help. The coaching searches were embarrassments because they were conducted by idiots. Gregg Marshall would have walked to Knoxville and Ernie Grunfeld was certain Jay Wright would have taken the job. What does Dickey do? He offers the job to neither and hires a guy whose greatest accomplishment was being Michael Jordan's butler.

You should have been embarrassed that UT was employing an athletic director so removed from reality that he was stunned Stallings took offense at being offered the job, tentatively accepting, then being told he needed to hold off while UT had further conversations with a coach everyone in college basketball knew was just working Iowa State for a raise.

Yes. Dickey's handling of the negotiations with Stallings, plus the fact that KO and his rather large circle of friends in the coaching community were telling anyone that asked that UT would be a crappy job as long as Dipstick Doug was the athletic director, is the reason Tennessee ended up relegated to Jerry Green.

Just as you and your group of Pearl haters are blinded.
Years ago the Boston Globe head lined their sports section with " Is now the time to trade Larry Bird". When
Red was asked about this he replied " the fans aren't going to hang me ".
Pearl is every bit as important to us as Bird was to the Celtics. Why some of you want to go back to 13 to 16 win seasons is beyond me. If Pearl leaves then we need to imediately put the curtains back up for the extra seats will not be needed. Pearl made a mistake and nothing can change that so get over it. I hope Pearl will
stay until he retires because we stood by him.

Sometimes I wonder if posters like this can walk and chew gum at the same time.

That is the most unintentionally funny sentence in VN history.
I'm serious in what I say. If you and your cronies want to wait another ten years and throw up trial baloons to find another coach, fine, but I'm not willing to wait when we have a perfectly fine coach that made a terrible mistake. Unlike you, you hateful, sarcastic little ogre, I'm willing to forgive. If he makes another one while he's still here, then he needs to go.:finger3:

KO was just telling the truth.

Dickey hated basketball because the UT fans liked Mears so much more than him. That said, all of his choices to replace DeVoe were solid. Alexander stuck his nose in it and screwed that one up.

I take it you mean the hiring of Wade Houston.

Growing up around Tennessee at that time, I don't remember that much anamosity between Dickey and Mears. Dickey was very popular at that time with Tennessee, as was Mears. Tennesseans soured on Dickey because of the way he left Tennessee.

I still wonder how in the world he became the AD at Tennessee.

lying, adultering, cheating phony

Pearl is clearly wrong for what happened but to say he's done should bring the ax is a bit overzealous and self-righteous.
