Has CBJ 'Sacked' Tennessee's Spring Football Tradition?

They changed it so we wouldn't enter the fall with a 1-1 record for beating ourselves. Sometimes beating yourself isn't good!

The Spring game is about 1) evaluating talent, 2) better understanding strengths, weakneses and opportunites, 3)keeping fans engaged during offseason, 4) recruiting, and 5) selling off old food supplies such as hot dog buns and semi-hardened nacho cheese whiz.

What do the players and recruits think? Unless you will be suiting up this fall for the Big Orange...?

Butch has stated on numerous occasions that he uses this format because there's not enough depth to field 2 complete competitive teams.

That's all there is to it.

I'm not sure how long you've been around the program, but there is no "tradition" in the O&W format. Past coaches tinkered with it just as much as CBJ.

Fulmer had at various times offense vs. defense, starters vs. backups, Jim Bob Cooter returning kickoffs, etc. Majors also mixed it up.

It's entertainment.. Like NBA all star weekend.. Get with the times..

Most important thing is health, and showcasing for recruits. There is a bigger picture

Why did CBJ screw with a Tennessee Tradition?

Under Coach Jones, we no longer have a real Orange and White Game. What we have now is an offense versus defense scrimmage...more like a glorified practice than the long-standing Spring time Tennessee Orange and White Game.

The Defense scores points? What's up with that?! It's like some sort of fantasy thing than a game between two squads or 'teams'.

Bring back the old school 'Orange' squad offense and defense, versus a 'White' squad of offensive and defensive players! Make it more like a real game.

Come on...the defense scores points for things other than a TD? Give me a break!

Anyway that's my opinion...:whistling:

The much celebrated spring game traditions of Tennessee...

If you haven't noticed, the spring game itself is dying. A lot of schools aren't even having it anymore, so in one respect, you should be glad we have one at all. Most schools are adapting changes to it if they are even having one.

Also, I still like the fact that he's made it a true Orange and White game, with the Orange team wearing all orange and the white team wearing all white.

I hope next year one side wears black jerseys and the other side wears the smokey grey/gray(whichever it is).

Heads would explode.

1: It's Free

2: Ive been to quite a few of the OW Games, and had more fun at this one than any in recent memory.

3: This is a better way to practice the team IMO bc you dont mix up 1st and 2nd team. 1st team OL works together against 1st team DL. Lineman need to have some consistency in who they play beside. These guys need to go against the best talent and the only way to do that is to put 1s vs 1s, 2s vs 2s, etc. yeah they mixed it up a little but dividing the football team into two separate teams is not the best way for our team to use this as a productive practice.

4: If you want to see real football, go to the games this fall. Do you even attend every game during the season? If you dont, then you have no reason to b@#$% now.

Great...anyone who simply raises a point about changing Tennessee Tradition gets ridiculed.

Thank you, KBVol, for an insightful reply and rationale.

Minor Traditions like the one you're complaining about change all the time. Get over it.

He's not the only one doing this. It makes it a more productive practice rather than "drafts" or dividing the team into 1's and 2's which makes it difficult to look at players with various groups.

Also, he doesn't have the players to have a productive spring game of 1's and 2's yet.

The only thing I don't like is the scoring system, as a fan, there's no way to keep up. What was the final score? 129-93 or something like that...

Other than that, it was great

does UT have a tradition when it comes to practicing?
is that something you really want? I'd say the only tradition in practice
is the tackling of the dummy for seniors before their last game...

This and the awful DJ. I am not anti DJ but our DJ is terrible.

We need like a handout or publication online that explains scoring. I liked the set up overall.

People actually pay attention to the score of a spring game? If so, you just don't get it. Jones wasn't the first to use this system. Good grief folks.

Jones is creating a tradition with the Spring game. It is the most fan friendly it has ever been. How many times did the DJ thank everyone for coming out? They have been snoozers in the past and at times seemed like something the players and coaches endured and tolerated. The current players and coaches are re-building the bond with the fans. I missed last year but was very impressed with Butch's approach to the event.
