I like the offense getting more points than just scoring. Think about it, you can win a football game 28-27 on literally 4 big plays while your offense is pretty much crap the rest of the game. That's not a good sign. The more points awarded means the better they did.

I'm pretty certain Coach Fulmer did the same thing , where the defense scored points for sacks, etc.. A couple of times. When it comes to Spring games , there really are no " traditions". It's a glorified practice.

What game would that be? The O&W game is just a glorified scrimmage. I don't care what format is used. It's a tool for the coaches to evaulate the talent in a game like scenario.

I agree, but I'm not sure it had anything to do with the way the game was managed or scored. I think it had more to do with our hugely passionate, optimistic, great fan base being very excited than how the game was setup. I agree with the OP to keep it the old way. Our fans will go to the O&W game regardless. There is a lot of excitement on the hill right now and with good reason.

May have already been said but Fulmer did this a couple of times too. Its sort of a product of no depth and this allows the coaches to mix and match players instead of seperatimg into two teams.

It is a legit point to raise--and of course it gets the usual smarmy responses from board dopes who can't make an intelligent response and so criticize the OP. Some OPs deserve prickish responses; this wasn't one of them.

there was nothing legit to the question...its a glorified practice,and a chance to see the newcomers and how far the veterans have improved...this was the prefect time and place for smarmy and prickish responses...

You act like he changed our mascot or something. Spring game setup is not a "tradition". People will ALWAYS complain about something. If we win about NC people will complain how we won

The fact that we have a spring game is a tradition. But, I don't see how the format is. As others have noted it has changed a number of times. The O & W game is a glorified scrimmage, it's job is to help aid in the development of the team 1st and foremost. Doing it this way lets the squads that will actually be on the field together play together. That allows for better evaluation by the coaches. The situational aspect give more exciting plays for the fans. The scoring system give the D a way to win without offense. The new format is just superior as it allows the spring game to preform all it's functions better.

In 2005, Fulmer used a "modified scoring system,"- OH THE HORRORS!

Imagine the heresy of the scoring format which included both the defense and offense able to score with 'non-traditional' means (and I hope you are sitting down..... special teams too!):

Forcing a 3-and-out = 1 point
Turnover = 6 points
Touchdown = 10 points
KO coverage (KO downed inside the 30-) = 1 point
Punt return (punt return of 10+ yards) = 1 point

First down = 1 point
Kickoff return past the 30-yard line = 1 point
Punt coverage (return of > 5 yards) = 1 point

I don't know of ANY O&W games in which so many players were placed under as much pressure to perform in front of a crowd; many for the first time. Does it make sense to put so many players under individual pressure? This was a good assortment of one-on-ones that could well pay off this fall, so I think it does, as does CBJ, apparently.

I posted about the Spring Game because I prefer how it had normally been in the past: 2 squads competing against each other, making a practice/scrimmage event more game-like. I think having the defense score and the game score getting to triple digits is silly.

I also wanted to see how many posters would call me names without making any kind of substantive point. Like usual on this board, a whole heap of attack-goons lash out at what they don't like and disapprove of, calling me an idiot and stupid, and so on.

you would have been fine saying you didnt prefer the scoring sysytem...I think everyone could have been fine with your opinion on it... but then you said CBJ is throwing UT tradition down the toilet for a PT Barnum style circus... thats what will get you bombed...
