Has the concept of dressing professional in public service jobs been completely discarded now?

Not sure how it is elsewhere, but in Nashville it seems that the hourly wages for unskilled labor have settled back to close to what they were pre-COVID. Of course, the only thing I am seeing is the places that have signs up. I understand why people might not want to work for that, particularly with inflation. What I don't understand is how in the hell are these people surviving if they won't work and have no money.
I remember when I was a teenager, my friends and I couldnt wait to get jobs because we all wanted to earn our own money! My first job was in retail. It paid minimum wage, which at the time I believe was around 4.00 an hour lol. I'll never forget my first paycheck, it was like 120.00 and I thought that was all the money in the world at that time! Ha!

With suits, it isn't about how expensive the suit is or how nice the material is. It's getting it properly tailored. For most men, just wearing a suit straight off the rack isn't going to look great.

A cheap suit can look nice if it is tailored and fits you well. A $5k suit that doesn't fit well (too bulky/baggy, etc.) will look like crap.

This is true. You can also make it all look good based on the shirt and tie with the suit.

I will say though that you can tell a difference in comfort with quality, soft material.

IMO, CFA's success all stems from their incredibly selective process of choosing "franchisees" (in quotes because they aren't really franchisees, but that's another conversation).

They pick the right people to run the restaurants, and it all flows from there.

Just anecdotal, but my understanding is they only allow a franchisee to own one store (or maybe two now). That forces the franchisee to be hands-on. I’ve also been told that they require the franchisee to have a master’s degree. I have a colleague who knows an owner of one.

Strongly disagree with this statement. Here in my area we have good factory job paying $22-30 an hour that can't get people to show up or last more than a day. They simply don't wanna work! These same jobs were paying $12-18 pre COVID.
Its not just about the money that drives people away from those jobs though. ( I saw the post that you were replying too, and I know im going a bit off the board here, but I hate the people are lazy and dont want to work argument.) A lot of it is about quality of life too, sure 22-30 is a good money, but most factories works shift work a lot of them work 12's but some work 8's. Also they rotate shifts so youre never actually used to being stuck on one shift. And holidays well hope you dont have a family you want to spend time with because you gotta be at work. If companies were truly interested in worker retention they would look more into upgrading the QOL for their employees. It doesnt matter how much money you make if youre miserable going into work every day.

My parents let me drop out of high school second semester of my jr year. I hated school and wanted to be independent. I spent about six months working in a kitchen at a bar and grill during the day and delivering Chinese food at night. I was back in school the next fall and didn’t leave again until I finished law school nine years later.

A good friend of mine who's a plant supervisor was telling me that they cant get hardly anybody to work overtime anymore, even when it pays time and a half and sometimes even double time. He said millennials and some Gen Z'ers simply value their time way more than they value money. He said this was not the case 15-20 years ago.

It is insane. I see it often.

That said, that behavior will get modified when this generation sees an actual financial/economic crisis.

To be serious for a moment, I don't think you are out of touch. Modesty, self respect, self awareness should be encouraged. A family place with children should be staffed by people who have an understanding of what is appropriate or they should be given guidelines. Professional appearance may be a stretch for an ice cream parlor, but at minimum they shouldn't wear anything to be remotely offensive to normal people. End of seriousness.

The only way to know for sure if you're off base is to take a pic of her next time and post it. That way we can have a well informed discussion.
Wanting to see them cakes?

You have ridiculous expectations Karen! A part time/teenage worker at an ice cream shop and an employee of a video game shop are not expected to “dress the part”. Technically I’d say they are dressing the part. Also, I had to chuckle at the salty butch comment. Oriole are way too sensitive over profanity. Virtually everyone watches movies and listens to songs with profanity in it.
Now if you’d have went to your bank and had someone wait on you wearing a wife beater or a salty butch ****…you might have more of a gripe.

I am publicly facing, generally wear a polo and jeans. Of course I grew up with sunday ties and polished shoes, rule is to dress half a level better than your average customer.

If youre hiring teenagers, be glad and appreciative that they show up

Wow so this is where we are now? You get called a "karen" for expecting employees who serve the public to dress with a modicum of professionalism? LOL ok then.

CFA somehow gets teenagers to wear a uniform and act courteous so they’ve set my expectations for fast food service - doesn’t seem too ridiculous to me. If you want successful retail, you might have to provide a uniform along with some decent training and management. There’s a reason for the high failure rate of food places

OTOH, They are not your employees. If the business owner wants them dressed differently it is his/her business.
Ha, I had to look up"Karen" in urban Dictionary. This is a discussion board so it's mostly opinions.

It appears the parents of that girl are the one that had ridiculous expectations.

Life is simply more important than work. If there's that much OT to give out then they need to hire more workers.

I recently switched jobs and upcoming rollouts requiring quite a bit of travel was a big factor. Last time we did them I was out for 80 nights in a year. I now make more money and barely travel into the office while my old company now has 3 open positions.

Meh, Capitalism. Corporations exist solely to make money. It is their only purpose. Humans are now seen as a commodity, especially by corporations(non-humans).
It really makes no difference what the job is. i.e. the phycisian who now must see 80 patients in a day when he previously saw 60.
Some people are now putting QOL ahead of their job.

Yep. I personally just switched positions at my current company for a better situation. I was getting up at 3am, having to work some weekends, depending on which location be on call for holidays. Now I work 730-4 no weekends, no on call. Much better QOL. They can't keep people in the spot I just left I'm the 5th one in the last 2 years to leave it.

They can't keep workers!! That's the damn problem! Turnover is ridiculous.
