Hats Off To Our Loyal ‘Volnation’ Baseball Fans!

It’s been easy and a lot of fun for all of us to come to the game day threads and cheer on our Vols the last few years.
But everything hasn’t always been rainbows and sunshine in the baseball forum.
Before CTV got here they had to suffer through the Todd Raleigh and Dave Serrano years.
There was a period from 2006-2018 the BaseVols didn’t even make the postseason.

A handful of posters have been loyal to the program and stuck it out all these years and kept this forum alive.

Hats off to the GOATS.

Buddy, I may not have posted much in the BB forum, but I have a Serrano signed Vols jersey! 😂

Curious if any of you longtime Vol fans felt this way 10 years ago?

Honestly, it had more to do with VN, and the folks that hung here than the results of the team at that time. If folks were hanging out here when we weren’t very good, they were pretty hardcore baseball fans. We certainly had an idea of what everyone believed here. Very small group of people that, for whatever reason, wanted to participate in a discussion about a sport that was rapidly progressing, worth the investment and that better days were ahead.

A lot of here was the exasperation with the FF and the inability to have a place to discuss, without trading barbs with folks with no manners, I think that may still be true…It was, simply, genuinely, a nice place to spend a little time. But I don’t recall anyone expressing ending the baseball program, not anyone that spent time here on a regular basis. There’s always drive by’s that are frustrated and maybe they prefer one sport or another, also folks who are just frustrated with all UT sports in general.

At that time, we weren’t bad at just baseball, the end of Fulmer, Pat was in decline, MBB was in different states of NCAA problems, baseball wasn’t on TV much, very difficult to follow, so nobody was in the mood for civility.

GBO!!!!

I commend y’all, truly. Only reason I’m a Tennessee fan is baseball, and I completely stopped paying attention other than following box scores or watching the 1-2 games a year we’d have on ESPNU and later the SEC Network

It's easier to say now, but the decades of suffering has made the last four seasons feel better.

Tennessee baseball - even through the bad years, remains my favorite team in the world. My White Sox and Steelers won championship titles in 2005 but Tennessee sweeping GaTech (with me in ATL) and making it to Omaha was my favorite part of that year. If I had known what would happen starting in 2006, I would have cherished that season more, as I would definitely had gone to Nebraska.

What or when would you say were the lowest of the low points of the team in your opinion?

The Todd Raleigh introductory press conference

The ******* couldn't string coherent sentences together and this was just a few weeks after Tennessee beat his Western Carolina team.

Honorable Mention:

(1) Todd Raleigh running both Andy Simunic and Yan Gomes off team.
(2) Dismissal of Dave Serrano which made me think maybe we will always suck if Serrano couldn't get it done.

I tried finding that press conference but had no luck.

This guy had nice things to say about him though.

“Todd is a very good baseball coach, but really he is just a tremendous person. He's got great passion for the game of baseball and great compassion for the kids. He's been at Western Carolina where a lot of my friends -- including the guy who hired me (as a coach), Jack Leggett, and Keith LeClair, who passed away from Lou Gehrig's Disease -- we've all been in that inner circle of friends in baseball. And it's great to see Todd get this opportunity, because he's deserving of it."
Tim Corbin, Head Baseball Coach (Vanderbilt)

Didn’t even know what baseball was until God Tony arrived. Had hope with Butch and Cuanzo. But it all let us down. We are blessed right now. All praise Danny White.

Nope. When I was in school in the late 1950s-early 1960s , one of my room mates tried out for there baseball team and made the squad and started. Not many students knew or cared life we had a baseball team, but I did and watched a lot of games

Of course he did.

Corbin needs to give Raleigh two world series rings as Todd Raleigh was as responsible for Vanderbilt's success as anyone.

Hell! Put Todd's name on the visiting dugout wall and name it after him.

How the hell did Mike Hamilton become athletic director?

We certainly had better options than him at that time??????????????

Raleigh was a Hamilton hire.
Didn't say he wasn't

Hamilton - like lots of guys from Clemson, thought Clemson's Jack Leggett was a genius. Never understood why. Didn't win diddly squat in the post season. Did well in an ACC that was - frankly, mediocre. His teams were frequently the master of "2-and-'que" in postseason play.

My comment was Vanderbilt (and Corbin) should honor Todd Raleigh, whose internal hobbling of the Tennessee program played a big part in Vanderbilt's rise.

The fact that Hamilton opted to include a quote from Tim Corbin in announcing the Raleigh hire. Shows how bizarre a hire this was.

There were literally dozens of guys better qualified who would have taken the job.
Delmonico was a better choice than Todd Raleigh.
The assistants on Delmonico's staff were better options.
The guy who sat under the press box at LNS and yelled "KNOCK IT IN THE RIVER SODDY-DAISY!" at every game would have been a better hire.
The woman who wanders around 5th Avenue every day yelling at her imaginary friend would have been a better hire.
Derek Dooley would have been a better hire
The reporters at the introductory press conference who were asking simple questions than Raleigh could not answer; would have all been better hires.
The sebaceous cysts that I had removed from my head in 2004, would have been hires.

And it was literally clear on that first day when he accepted the job.
