eh, the death of major characters is not as gloom and doom as some portray it here. the show set itself up for that kind of expectation with how it started. i was floored when they killed Ned Stark in season one. then the red wedding....etc, etc, etc...for the TV viewer, it gave you a real sense of not knowing what would happen, and with that, very excited to see what happens next. that's basically it. it's not that you want big deaths all the time....but when you have them it changes the dynamic of the show, and sets a new path. and for hte most part, that's been pretty dramatic and exciting for the viewer.
there have been a lot of big moments in this show, most have been pretty much on point with what drives the audience to watch.....
not too many other TV shows out there generating the kind of talk like this one has...so mission accomplished.
This is where I'm at. What's the most talked about things with this show? Ned Stark being killed. The Red Wedding. Both were major plot driving characters being killed off, but the story developed so much more because of that. I didn't like it solely because major characters were killed. It made the story better overall and more realistic. If I want a cliche happy ending, there's plenty of that being made.
I knew I found a show I liked when Ned was killed. Not because he was killed but because GRRM was able to tell that story and use it to make a more compelling story. Honestly I'd assumed that Ned would live and be a part of the show for a long time. But the good guy lost. Badly. Then a couple years later was the Red Wedding. Another surprise. But you were able to look back earlier in the season and see where Robb had screwed up his alliance with the Freys. And then I thought back to Tywin Lannister writing a letter at his desk while preaching to Tyrion, I think it was, that not all wars are won with swords. At that moment was he writing the letter to the Walder Frey asking him to double cross the Starks and align with the Lannisters? The smarter person won. Even though he was perceived to be the bad guy.
I gained a lot of respect for GRRM with those two events.
