Heath Shuler vs. Peyton Manning

If I only had one drive it would be Peyton, provided he had receivers that could catch the ball.

If not you would have to go with Shuler.

For those not old enough to have seen him play Shuler was a true talent on the field that at times had way too much arm strength making it hard for his receivers to catch the ball.

He could make the throws and he could flat out fly for a quarterback at that time. I still remember the Arkansas coach saying he hoped he tore up a knee, he was just that good. So good that for me comparing Crompton to Heath is some very, very high praise. If he lives up to 1/2 of that we have some good seasons in store for us.

But Peyton is the best quarterback we have ever had.

Peyton is the best QB we've ever had, but Tee was apparently the most important. I can still remember Shuler in the rain against UF, man that was some game. Shuler was a heck of a QB, and to be honest I think if he had stayed for senior season he would be higher up our rankings.

Me too. And I would take Tony Robinson over both of them.

Damn! Glad I read all the posts before I skipped to the end cause I was going to say the same thing.

Talent wise, Heath might have had more. But Peyton was the better player because he had an incredible work ethic. Peyton wasnt as fast or mobile as Heath, but made better decisions with the ball.

And for future referance, the answer is always Peyton, no matter what the question.

How would you like your eggs?.......Peyton
How many mpg does that car get?.....Peyton.

Just cant go wrong with Peyton.

Listen guys, personally seeing Heath in High School & at UT, he was unreal awesome! You put Peyton behind the early 90's Redskins O line & Peyton would have been another David Carr! I'm not knockin' Peyton; Him & Marvin are the only reason I keep up with the Colts, but Heath was a better athlete & an all around threat college QB. Heath was the original David Carr; Great QB, great talent, arm, head, heart, but you get hit so many times & you get gun-shy. Joe M, John E, Brete F or whoever...you can't get beat up & survive in the NFL.

He flopped everywhere he played. He was terrible. Sorry.I have heard from "reliable" sources his arm strength was overrated in college. If you are saying he didn't "make" it because of his injuries then you are completely uninformed and must not know too much about the game. He might have retired DUE to his injuries, but according to most scouts and a couple of assistants I know personally, he wasn't going to make it.

The ignorance is only from those making predictions that WERE NEVER going to come true. He didn't have it. Face it.

And to make an analogy to Kerry Collins is TOTAL IGNORANCE. think about for a minute then get back to me.

You lose this one. And pretty badly I might add

Wow. Heavy flow day? Geez man, it's a football discussion.....grab a beer or something. :p

& for the record.......he did have a strong arm.......please don't beat my children because I disagree

I'd take Manning though.....

apples and oranges

2 different quarterback styles entirely...1 is brain and arm the other is legs and lesser arm. Matter of taste as far as weapons.

However if I'm choosing a qb of the two to run my offense at Tennessee in his prime I'd take Peyton to run my O.

On a side note I'd choose Andy Kelly in his prime over either.

Heath was a beast anyway, he could have played TE, DE, LB, Kicker, Punter & would have been one heck of a water boy! I saw Heath throw the football the length of the field, so armstrength is there. Work ethic; the man quit drinking cokes before his HS freshman year, and he had a crazy work ethic, and his dad was a regular joe not a pro. Decisions...OK...Peyton has it there. I may still take Peyton, but Heath is a close second. If he would have had a halfway decent line/team, he had the ability to be great. All great QB's had those studs behind them; Peyton/Marvin/Joseph; Brady/Moss/; Joe/Jerry; Aikmen/Irvin/Smith- Heath/_________?

Tony Robinson is IMO the best college quarterback UT has ever had, with the caveat that I am too young to remember seeing Holloway play. The guys who are too young to have seen Robinson really, really missed out.

YES!!!! A man that knows what he is talking about!!!!!!

Tony Robinson was the BEST. A stud.

1. Tony Robinson
2. Heath Shuler
3. Peyton
4. Holloway
5. Tee Martin
6. JIMMY STREETER (best athlete)

Based on the COLLEGE game, I would rather have Heath and Tony R. based on NFL....well there is NO QUESTION. Peyton is the face of UT, along with Doug Atkins, Reggie White, and Johnny Majors. But based on the college game give me heath and Tony and more games will be won, with the supporting cast Peyton had. Shuler and robinson had talent, but not like Manning.

Don't confuse talent with hard work.

If there is a QB (player?) in the history of the game that worked harder that PM, I don't remember him.

And Peyton, for all his talent, struggled to win the big ones.

Peyton couldn't beat Florida; Heath couldn't beat Bama. They both beat the hell out of UGA. If you say Peyton couldn't win the big ones then you have to say the same thing about Heath.

I love both these guys. Both were Heisman runner-ups; I think Peyton should have one and Heath probably shouldn't have. Outside of UT fans all people remember of Heath was that he was a bust in the NFL. If you go back and look at his UT career it was pretty amazing. The highlight clip would be out of this world. For some reason all I remember is the 92 UGA and UF games. He played out of this world. If it weren't for Heath; Fulmer might not be our HC.

Peyton set an NCAA record for most victories. Shuler or Robinson couldn't do too much better.

I rememebr Shuler. He left early and flopped. Peyton stayed and then went on. Shuler was impressive. But I am too big a Peyton fan to vote against him

PM had much more talent around him. That was my point. They were all great, I would rather have TR or HS with Peyton's supporting cast! (IN COLLEGE)

Well it's pretty hard to remember enough evidence to argue with this. But I do recall a couple of Peyton's losses involved his supporting cast not offering much support.

I am old enough and have seen TR, Heath, Peyton, Kelly and I would rank them

1. Peyton
2. Heath (My all time favorite besides Peyton, killed me when he left early).
3. TR

I am not sure where I would put Andy "interception" Kelly.

He was decent, but not great. What he had was a great supporting cast. Amsler, Pickens, Carter, Rolle, oh yeah and a couple of "decent" running backs named Webb and Cobb. Not to mention the Twin Towers on the O-Line.

There were lots of passes that he just threw up in the air and let Pickens win the jump ball, or that ended up playing DB cause it was so underthrown (see 5 interception UVA/Vols Sugar Bowl).

Sure I loved Kelly, he was an all around good guy from home here in Tennessee (Dayton), but when thinking about which quarterback I would want to lead my team down 4 with 2 minutes to go at Birmingham he isn't one of my picks.

The other three are, with Peyton at the top because he is and always was just a better quarterback than they were IMO.

Peyton is also our only QB to win the Johnny Unitas Award, the Davey O'Brien Award, and the Maxwell Award. I just don't see how you can pick against the guy.
