Hendon Hooker is the best Tennessee quarterback since …

What was the record for each against the Big Three we have to beat to be considered successful (Al, Fl, Ga?) Its all perspectIve.
I will just throw this out there. PM 3-1 vs Bama, 4-0 vs GA, 0-4 vs Fl.

Unfair comparisons. The Bama and UGA teams Peyton faced were extremely weak compared to what Hooker has had to face. Saban is the GOAT and Smart is way better than Richt ever thought about. On the flip side, the UF teams Peyton had to deal with were infinitely better than Hooker has faced.

Dobbs is also 2nd all-time in Vols history in rushing TDs and 14th all-time in rushing yards. I think people truly underestimate how great that dude was for our program.
And he had a better career Qbr rating than Manning if I remember correctly or at minimum had a higher Qbr rating than Manning in their last two years.

It’s hard to compare because of the systems and styles, but Hooker is the best since Manning.
He doesn’t throw picks…. Doesn’t appear to rattle…. Can run… throws a great deep ball. He’s really impressed me A TON. I saw his VT highlights and was like “yeah ok”….and look at him now. Damn

This system is going to make QBs not the other way around. That makes it very hard to compare.
That is simply not true IN ANY SYSTEM.
The QB has to be capable.
Look at Joe Milton last season for a more recent example of that. Just 2021, we don't know what Joe will be like in 2023.

Hendon is not a system QB. He had big games at Va Tech too.

I'm going to wait until season's end before giving him a grade. He could end anywhere from Heath Shuler to best ever.

Tough question, what would other QB's have done in this offense? Huepel is a QB's coach and his offense is a QB offense. I don't think its comparable to anything run by Majors, Fulmer or any of the recent coaches. The last coach struggled to get 14 points on the board.

The system definitely helps him because defenses still haven’t learned how to deal with the fast tempo offense.

Hooker is in a different offense than we’ve ever seen, so it’s hard to compare. I do know that Hooker thrives on this prolific offense and plays the QB in it extremely well. I’d like to see this offense go against a Nebraska defense of the 90s: we’d score a hundred by the half, haha!

Not really. Look at the attempts difference.

Dobbs:
2015- 344
2016- 357

Manning:
1996- 380
1997- 477

Also Dobbs rating in his JR year 2015 (127) was lower than Peyton’s 1996 (147). Now their SR ratings were closer. Dobbs was 150.6 where as Peyton’s was 147.7. Which makes zero sense. Peyton had a better completion %, more passing yards, more passing TDs, higher average yards per attempt, fewer INTs yet a lower rating than Dobbs.

His throws were routinely over the head or in ground. He is a much better runner than Hooker but even though Heupel is genius at getting receivers open down field. Yet Dobbs often missed wide open receivers. While we love Dobbs I cant believe he would be better.

That's not my recollection. Hendon has missed a bunch of open receivers this season, so people can say the same thing about him years from now. And he's awesome, but I still think Dobbs was better. I have no doubt he would have thrived in this offense.

0–3. You can’t count the 94 game

Not really. Bama was coming off back to back NC appearances and UGA was ranked. Let’s not act like they were chopped liver. Agreed that UGa was as talented as they were today just not coached at all

Fill in the blank.

I’m going to say Casey Clausen. Loved Josh Dobbs and frankly wished my daughter had married him instead of the guy she’s with now but Hooker is an elite passer and not far behind Dobbs in running ability. Iceman is still ahead though … at least for now.
I hope your SIL is not on here....if so, he's crying in the shower.

Use whatever metric you chose. I just post this to add to the discussion. The list is based solely on career wins. I cut it down to those that had played at least 20 games and had a winning percentage of at least 60%. Of course, that may not be fair as the number of games has changed and freshmen couldn't play back in the early 70's. (All math errors are mine and I openly accept them.)
1997 Peyton Manning (39-6) 87%
2003 Casey Clausen (34-10) 77%
2007 Erik Ainge (26-12) 68%
1991 Andy Kelly (24-5-2) 77%
1974 Condredge Holloway (23-9-2) 68%
2016 Joshua Dobbs (23-11) 68%
1999 Tee Martin (22-3) 88%
1988 Jeff Francis (22-13-1) 61%
1993 Heath Shuler (19-5) 79%
1983 Alan Cockrell (17-8-1) 65%
