Hendon Hooker is the best Tennessee quarterback since …

LOL he threw 3 picks against UGA his senior year.. You’re full of sh1t. Anyone there remembers his “I could beat UGa with one arm comment” after he missed the game his junior year. Back to your McCoullough trolling.
That Georgia defense was nasty. I dont think Casey is 2nd or 3rd on the qb list but he was a road warrior. His best game he played in my opinion was that game on the road against Auburn 2003. We had no business being in that game and he repeatedly stepped up and made a big throw and drove us down the field on the last possession and threw a pick that Auburn made a great play on near the ground. Every Auburn fan I have ever talked to was certain Clausen was taking that game from them on that final drive as he repeatedly answered the bell.

I feel blessed that we don't ever have to answer this question.

I'm happy to remember back over the years through some great players who have worn orange. And among them, several outstanding quarterbacks:

Hendon Hooker
Josh Dobbs
Erik Ainge
Casey Clausen
Tee Martin
Peyton Manning
Heath Schuler
Andy Kelly
Tony Robinson
Jimmy Streater
Condredge Holloway
...and fellas like Johnny Majors and George Cafego and Beattie Feathers before the QB position was officially the QB position, back when the tailback handled the ball and every lad played both offense and defense.

Picking one out of that crowd seems wrong to me. Because we don't have to. And because there's no single one of them who are best in every possible way you can define great quarterbacking.

So if you want me to narrow it down to the best 15 or so, I think I could do that. But the best one? I'm gonna have to pass.

Hendon is special. That's all we really need to say.

Go Vols!

Clawson had 35 interception. Dobbs would have killed in this system, but Hooker wins on coaching... Maybe Tee Martin... but to early in the season to make that statement for sure. Manning, but I have a bias's tword running qbs....

since... I was born... seems like a safe answer

Clausen played in a different era of the passing game. I’d imagine all the QBs from the early 2000s threw more INTs than todays top QBs. When was the last time you saw a QB throw a 45 yd pass on 3rd down, it get intercepted & announcer say “it’s as good as a punt”? I watch a lot of football & I can’t recall the last time I heard that phrase or seen that strategy. It was very common years ago.

I say best since Peyton. I dont recall Casey being as dominant as Hooker is this season.

Hard to compare them. I'd have loved to have seen Dobbs in CJH's offense.

Not to mention Pig Howard, Von Pearson, Marquez North, Josh Malone, Jauan Jennings, Jason Croom, Ethan Wolf, etc. Kamara, Hurd and Kelly catching out of the backfield would've had a field day too.

He's the best QB since Peyton Manning

He's so clearly better than Dobbs

Clausen was a game manager.

Erik Ainge was about as effective in the passing game, bur since Hooker doesn't turn the ball over he gets the edge.

Ice man was legit. It is really a hard question as there is no control to compare them to. My statement may be sensationalist as the game has changed considerably. I think Hendon Hooker is the best coached qb we have had the past few decades, maybe ever.

You're right about the interception comparison not being fair.

He's on pace to eclipse 3,000 yrds this season (and was within half a football field of doing it last year). Peyton, Ainge, and Bray are the only UT QBs that have (that I recall). TDs, QBR stats, etc. are up there with or better than all but Peyton. Just shy of averaging a first down (9.9 y/a) every time the ball leaves his hand as a Vol. Best P/A for a UT QB by far (Peyton only 8.4).

He's best stat to me though is ball protection (knock on wood). In a Tennessee jersey the dude's thrown 41 TDs and only 3 picks. That's nuts, borderline unheard of. I'm not saying he's better than Peyton but I am saying he's starting to separate himself from the rest of the pack and that's a pretty solid group of QBs (Shuler, Kelly, Ainge, Tee, Bray, Holloway, Clausen, Dobbs).

Payton Manning never beat Florida... just gonna set this here and walk away.

Maybe you should walk back and pick it up.

In the four seasons that Peyton (not Payton) played for Tennessee, the Florida Gators under Spurrier:
  • Finished w/a Top 5 Ranking in the AP Poll
  • Lost a grand total of 3 SEC games (2 in '97)
  • Won 3 SEC Championships
  • Won 1 BCS Nat'l Championship

When he wins our 1st Heisman, will you make him the All-Time Greatest UT QB?

If he wins us an SEC Championship as well? I'd say he'll be on par with Manning. Not above Manning cause the whole Earth knows that Manning should've won the Heisman anyways.

I moved to Knoxville in 98 and started high school. I really wasn't there for the Manning years. I respect the man greatly, he has done a lot for Knoxville. The question is subjective and I think everyones answer is going to relate to how they felt in that time. Tee Martin is up there for me. He is one of the reasons I became a vol fan. But I feel really good about where this team is at right now. Cautious optimism mixed with we gonna win by fiddy.

“Since Dobbs” appears to shortchange Hooker which i don’t mean to do but JD was a warrior himself. He was the reason ‘15 & ‘16 were good seasons. I’ll reserve my vote until the end of the season.
That's what I'm thinking. Jury is still out. Dobbs had us close against Bama even though he fumbled at the end, but hey so did JG lol. I think someone said it earlier, it's hard to say how other QBs would ajbw performed in this system. That said, when you see Hooker throw, he's very accurate.

Josh had to deal with alot of $hit he shouldnt have due to BJ's insecure personality disorders. He, Barnett, Kamara, etc held that team together thru that mess. Tennessee should have fired Jones after the bowl game due to coaching malpractice......

Dobbs was better, he just played for a Freaking Idiot!!!!! I heard Dobbs say he would have loved to play in this offense!!!! Hooker is good, not the runner Dobbs was. Shuler, Iceman, Dobbs, Hooker, Andy Kelly and Conredge are my favorites of all time!!! Also liked Dewey Warren and Jimmy Streeter.

But do rings count cause he won the ring over the others so I think that automatically makes him top 3 or 4

No. Rings are won by teams, not individuals. Consider:
Tee was less than 50% passing against Syracuse, Florida, and Arkansas. He was barely over 50% against Georgia with about 140 yards and 2 INTs. Those were Tennessee's biggest regular season games that year and the Vols won in spite of his awful play.
Tee was a 57% passer as a junior and 54% passer as a senior. That's really bad.
Tennessee's defense forced 5 turnovers against Florida and the offense could only muster 17 points in regulation, because they had no passing game. This is with Jamal Lewis at RB and some future NFL starters at WR.

That team won on great defense and being opportunistic. Tee is exactly why you don't judge QBs based on rings (So are Mark Rypien, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Jeff Hostetler, Doug Williams, etc.)

Neither did Clausen, Martin, Ainge, Dobbs or Hooker. Their TEAMS beat Florida’s teams. Is this really that hard?

Peyton beat down Bama teams. UF then is like Georgia and Bama now. Hooker beats both this year and ends this conversation because he'll go on to win the Heisman too. Book it!!!!! GBO 🍊
