Heupel is Figured Out

As I said, defense was THE problem. I'm saying not to overlook how SC exposed Tennessee's offense from a schematic standpoint. They defended it the best they could with a rag tag defense.
You are now trying walk back and cover up your flawed assessment.
Have another drink and think about it.
If the defense gets stops and forces short fields then we could have scored 60+ but they did not.

A piddling Gamecock team figured out the recipe to beat Tennessee. They hung their corners 10 yards back and never let the Vol receivers get behind them. The fact about this offense is it's not designed to put up long, sustained drives. Gamecocks gave up the short ball all day and Heupel's offense just isn't built to take advantage of that. SC had nothing to lose taking a risk like that on D and it paid off in a big way. You beat this offense by hanging your corners back.

Make no mistake, this game is on the defense, but don't let that distract you from what happened on offense. That Gamecock defense was one of the worst in the SEC with multiple injuries. Any other SEC team is going to watch how they handled the Vol offense and just execute that formula better. Heupel needs to address that in his scheme or teams will have him figured out real soon.

Scored 38 and played the 4th quarter without our Heisman candidate QB. Sure, let's blame Heupel and the offense....

Yes, the recipe is to score on almost literally every drive.

We got ... what ... 1 defensive stop all night? Let them convert on a 3rd and 20?

I don't for the life of me understand why people are talking about the offense. We had an off-night on offense, but wouldn't have mattered if the D could've stopped anything in front of them. Pass defense has been bad most of the season, but South Carolina was the team to most ruthlessly exploit it.

Agree. The unknown is how much of this is on field talent? Versus off field talent? My gut says its the former more so than the latter and that not much will change on the staff until there is more of a rotation of "their" players coming through.

Obviously we’re lacking talent in the lbs and secondary. Like Kirby Smart says, no amount of coaching can totally compensate over superior talent. But there are plenty of defensive coaches who can recruit and develop. I’ve never been happy with Martinez and the best I can say about Banks is ‘he’s learning.’ Sign the current class, keep close tabs on the ‘23 commits, and see who come on the open market wrt defensive coaches when the season ends.

You are mixing the Apples and the Oranges.
You can't say they figured out the Offense when they did not.
They didn't figure out the offense.
You did say they figured out the Offense when they actually did not.
Defensive Stops would have had us cruising to an easy rout.
Short fields and better Starting positions with stops.
They figured out our Defense not our Offense.

Scoring 38 on the road when your opponent scores 60 plus is not just a failure on one side of the ball, it's a catastrophic failure on both sides of the ball.

There is no reason our offense should not have scored much more than it did, unless you think the defense also played offense.

I'm sorry but if someone said "Vols will score 38 on Sat nite against the Cocks - will they win?" I think 99% of fans would have said yes, except you of course. Hell USC did not score a touchdown last week AT ALL. Rattler had more passing TD's last night than he did all season combined. This was a defensive failure 100%. OK, OK, 99%. Better? Good grief.

Yes, we could have scored 40 (but didn't); yes, the defense was obviously the problem--but I do have concerns about Heupel's system.

For one thing, the novelty of our system will certainly wear off--and already is. Teams will practice for it, everybody's seen it--and I think it's effectiveness might erode, depending on the quality of the talent we have. And, a lot of times in recent games, we seem not to be playing as fast as earlier in the year. Hooker is looking to the sideline for calls, the officials are slow to spot the ball; the tempo seems to have slowed somewhat.

Beyond that, we had to earn everything we got last night except for the one TD throw to the tight end. Otherwise, we did not confuse South Carolina; they covered Hyatt and all our receivers pretty tightly all night. South Carolina's offense created a lot more confusion and problems for us than our offense created for them. Our play-calling was a ton of the usual Hooker short drops and passes of 7-20 yards. Hey, nothing wrong with that if you're completing them and moving the ball, which we mostly did. It seems like a system that will be very dependent on excellent receivers--and a real play-making back.

Impossible to argue with our offensive success this year. We'll see if we can maintain something close to this level in the next few years.

South Carolina basically did.
That doesn't have anything to do with our offense. We simply don't have the horse on defense and I'm surprised it took this long for it to show up in a big way. I'm sure UT will get the right guys on defense----it's only year two for this staff.

It works if our coaches adjust. 10 to 15 yard ins were there all night. Quit throwing it deep and take what they give you. We also did not run the ball near enough after we got it close. Then when the corners suck back in, you can start to throw deep again. This is not hard. Literally could have thrown 10 yard ins all night long.

Then you're missing the reality that we should have scored a great deal more on offense. That takes a lot of pressure of a defense that has regressed over the past few years.

Statistically the Defense had improved from last year but last night they played their absolute worst game.

The offense did its job and to say it didn’t is asinine.

These current players should have kept SC to 20 points at most. That SC high school offense will go back to what they've done the whole year next week.

Not sure what happened or why, but the defensive players didn't act like they cared and let's don't get started on the scheme on that side.

Our offense is our offense that’s not going to change. We need depth and a defense. Our defensive coordinator stinks.

The offense wasn’t on fire like normal but I’m certain the loss wasn’t the 38 points we scored but instead the 63 we gave up.

Tennessee had over 500 yards of total offense. They had 152 yards rushing and scored 38 points.

We got to get better at D. Especially in the secondary. We had played pretty well upfront most of the year until tonight. Most of the year we have stopped the run and got after the quarterback. We didn’t do either last night and that just put more pressure on our suspect secondary. GBO

We’ve done fine vs Saban, Stoops, and Narduzzi. Our problem is protecting the QB and running the ball effectively enough to dictate changes to the defense. If the D sags back, you should be able to run.

This.

Plus, I believe falling behind impacted our offense more than SC's defensive scheme. I mean, who expected Tom Brady to show up in a SC uniform?
