Naaa, putting up 38 and over 500 yards of offense should win you the game. Our defense never showed up.A piddling Gamecock team figured out the recipe to beat Tennessee. They hung their corners 10 yards back and never let the Vol receivers get behind them. The fact about this offense is it's not designed to put up long, sustained drives. Gamecocks gave up the short ball all day and Heupel's offense just isn't built to take advantage of that. SC had nothing to lose taking a risk like that on D and it paid off in a big way. You beat this offense by hanging your corners back.
Make no mistake, this game is on the defense, but don't let that distract you from what happened on offense. That Gamecock defense was one of the worst in the SEC with multiple injuries. Any other SEC team is going to watch how they handled the Vol offense and just execute that formula better. Heupel needs to address that in his scheme or teams will have him figured out real soon.
We were down multiple scores. They knew we needed to pass. That doesn't take a genius to figure out. The defense has to make stops for our offense to fire on all cylinders. The offense did enough to win and was very productiveYes, we could have scored 40 (but didn't); yes, the defense was obviously the problem--but I do have concerns about Heupel's system.
For one thing, the novelty of our system will certainly wear off--and already is. Teams will practice for it, everybody's seen it--and I think it's effectiveness might erode, depending on the quality of the talent we have. And, a lot of times in recent games, we seem not to be playing as fast as earlier in the year. Hooker is looking to the sideline for calls, the officials are slow to spot the ball; the tempo seems to have slowed somewhat.
Beyond that, we had to earn everything we got last night except for the one TD throw to the tight end. Otherwise, we did not confuse South Carolina; they covered Hyatt and all our receivers pretty tightly all night. South Carolina's offense created a lot more confusion and problems for us than our offense created for them. Our play-calling was a ton of the usual Hooker short drops and passes of 7-20 yards. Hey, nothing wrong with that if you're completing them and moving the ball, which we mostly did. It seems like a system that will be very dependent on excellent receivers--and a real play-making back.
Impossible to argue with our offensive success this year. We'll see if we can maintain something close to this level in the next few years.
And the USC offense didn’t do anything confusing or special. Flats left, flat right, 7 yard come backs 75% if the game. They ran the same 6 plays entire game and we couldn’t stop it.Defense was the story last night. The offense was far from perfect but SC may as well been running plays against air. 1 punt all night. 9 TD drives.

You are now trying walk back and cover up your flawed assessment.
Have another drink and think about it.
If the defense gets stops and forces short fields then we could have scored 60+ but they did not.

That’s not how got beat us, you do as Narduzzi said, “you man their ass up and knock them off their line”.
