Heupel on players entering transfer portal

Does anyone else notice that when a player leaves it’s “a money grab” or “good riddance” but when a player decides to transfer in we tend to make it about “loving our culture and coaches” “previous coaches lied to them” etc…. More than likely those coming in are doing the same as those going out.

I would say it’s more akin to the wild West than pro sports. Even the NFL has contracts with set number of years required and minimums and maximum salary for first year players.
That's only because the NCAA and schools won't create a pro league. It's not the athletes who made the rules or paid under the table benefits for decades nor did the athletes create the NIL rules, transfer rules, and massive media contracts.

The Wild West environment exists because the colleges are trying to have it both ways: maintain the ruse of amateur athletics AND pay the players to play. It's a ridiculous situation created by people who have no business running a pro sports league.

Couldn't agree more. Crazy how much has changed so fast, that players don't care about the playoffs. Greed at its finest?

“Individuals are going to make a decision that they feel is right for them, their family, whatever it might be," said Heupel on Sunday while speaking with reporters after the playoff brackets were revealed. "I just know this as a competitor, [been] doing this a long time as a coach, but also in my playing experience – man, I can’t imagine not wanting and participating in what I think is one of the most unique opportunities in your playing career, but also in your life. You’ve poured a lot of work into it and this is a unique opportunity.”

The playoffs is a unique experience.

Players don’t currently have any restrictions. And coaches have contracts. There are stipulations or penalties if a coach doesn’t fulfill the terms of the contract. For example CJH’s contract had a buyout of $8M originally. Reduced by $2M each beginning last year. I don’t think you’re making the argument you think you are. It’s unclear if any players would have to pay back NIL money for leaving since it’s not public - which is another problem. If the players are employees then they work for the state and all payment must become public record. But again right now there are basically no rules. Not even so much as guidelines.

Only in very rare cases does a buyout present a problem for either side in these contracts. Coaches move, and the school hiring them picks up the buyout, or a school moves on and simply absorbs the buyout as part of the transaction.

People discuss actually having restrictions on a player being able to move in the first place, or being forced on the bench if they do move. If a coach is restricted from coaching at all for a period, I believe you would have a closer system.

Let players move as they see fit. Eventually the NIL deals will have buyouts, if they aren't already there.

I'm fine with coaches and players having freedom of movement and contract. It's when folks (not you) clutch pearls and bemoan that players moving spells the end of the sport that I become amused.

Just a side note. Saw Joe Theismann on an interview this afternoon and he made a good point about the NIL and transfer portal. He said the biggest issue he sees is that it’s caused competition to be lessened within teams. Said if players see they aren’t starting or getting a good bit of playing time, they stop competing and immediately focus on the transfer portal at the end of the year. Used to be there was no option. If you wanted playing time, you had to keep competing. Now they can just leave. Interesting take.
