Horrible coaching at end of purdue game

That sequence right there is yet another example of why you'll never see a Pearl-coached team go deep in March. There's no plan; there's no organization. There's just chaos. Which is useful, a lot of the time, but you can't suddenly just turn chaos off and start playing smart, disciplined basketball in crunch time.

The problem is not that Chism took the shot, nor that Maze dribbled around and wasted time before passing it to Chism. The problem is that, as usual, there was no plan, no play. "Dribble it up and let's out-athlete em" is the only "play" we have.

i thought hopson was going to become a big time scorer... anyone know what's up with him?

and in regards to the end of the game, it sucks we lost. a wide open three from chism isn't the WORST shot you could take (even though he butchered the shot).
I would have like to see him drive in. I think it would have been a big mismatch. BUT at the time it wasn't a terrible idea.

I don't think we can complain too much. Nice try. We'll get better from this. GO VOLS!

Particularly bothersome when you consider that the Vols used 2 timeouts, just seconds prior, to discuss such a scenario.

Dont get me wrong...I love Bruce Pearl and what he has done....but his style of basketball is terrible. This style of everybody and their brother gunning 3's and hoping for turnovers will not win a championship. Chism needs to stay in the paint and crash the boards....everybody has the green light to shoot the 3..its a very lazy style of basketball!! We still cant run a half court offense and we still cant penetrate a 2-3 zone. Very disappointed in pearl and his style of basketball will get us beat against top tier teams.

I would've liked to see T Smith isolated and take someone off the dribble and maybe draw a foul. But again, I will not complain with a wide open 3.

I would've liked that as well - but I have a feeling the refs were going to swallow their whistle if we had taken it into the lane.

wrong. take the open shot, and have everyone crash the boards. would shooting a 2 be better yes, but hell what coach wouldn't take their chance with a wide open 3.

Are you kidding me? With 7sec left, only down by 1, it doesn't matter how open you are, you attack the damn basket!!! The chance of making a layup or getting 2 free throws >>> taking an open look 3!!! On top of that, he is NOT a shooter!!! Do you math, please!!! I am mad.

hopson played tentative. Tatum didn't play great but he gave alot of effort. Chism deserved to take that shot. For 4 years he has been a clutch performer

agreed....having said that, we had much better options on the floor

Scotty either gets HOT or he is COLD never nothing in the middle. He is a streaky shooter. The reason is because he rushes his shots when he really doesnt need to. When he's hot he takes his time squares to the basket and shoots.

And if he had made the shot, Pearl would be a genius right now. We played a top team and lost by one point. Not 10, not 20, but one point. Why so much bitterness toward Pearl? I don't get it.

Keep in mind that we only needed 2 to win and Purdue's best interior defender had fouled out.

Love it when the team "fans" resort to name calling and personal attacks against playeres on their team when that team loses a close game against a higher ranked opponent. With friends like these...

he didn't really shoot a whole lot tonight....i think it had to do with his god awful ball handling. he did not look like an all sec player

This.

It was a very very good look guys. Stop bashing Pearl for that play call.

It wasn't a play call. (If it was -- if the goal of that sequence was to get Chism an open look from beyond the arc -- then Pearl is a moron.) It was just something that happened after our guys ran around for awhile. I don't have a problem with Chism taking that shot once the ball was in his hands and the clock was running down, but I'm disgusted that with 17 full seconds we didn't even take a stab at getting anything inside. What was Chism doing out there in the first place? Why weren't we trying to get him or Tyler Smith the ball down low?
