How I Met Your Mother

So, if the mother does die, is there a chance that something happens to Barney as well and "The Pact" comes back into play?

I can't believe they are going this way to end the series. I had a feeling they'd go this way, I just really hoped they'd find another way.

I'd be a little disturbed if Robin and Ted do wind up together, but the mother dying would be heartbreaking, devastating, and I'm man enough to admit, teardrop(s) worthy. But that's what would make it great and reality. It would be a very memorable ending.

I know the internet is freaking out right now, but honestly to me her being dead when old Ted is telling the kids makes perfect sense. Although sad, it's realistic and a pretty bold thing to do, to not give the typical happy ending.

The mother dying scenario makes having Bob Saget as the storyteller all the more intriguing.

Anybody else notice the song at the end of the show - If You See Her, Say Hello by Bob Dylan.

I discussed HIMYM with some co-workers at lunch today and we came up with two other thoughts:

1) Maybe Ted is the one that is dying. That's why it's him telling the kids the whole story of the people he dated and other random nonsense. And him crying is really about a father not being able to attend the wedding.

2) What if it's Robin that is dead and he is sad because she won't be able to attend her daughter's wedding.

But the whole mother being dead makes more sense to the story.

#1 is kinda weak but I guess it's kinda, sorta plausible, but #2 doesn't make any sense at all given the context of the scene.

The only way 1 works for me, at all (and even then is a stretch) is if the kids are watching some recording of him saying all this, not sitting right in front of him. Because from what I've gathered, he's several years older in the future, and I'm pretty sure when that scene takes place their kids are still pretty young, so unless he was dying for a long time, it's not #1. Plus if it's a recording, why isn't it just Josh Radnor narrating and not Bob Saget? I thought the whole reason Saget was the narrator is because it signifies the Ted telling the story was an old man now.

The show is leading you to believe the mom is either sick or dead. We were just discussing other possibilities if in fact the mom is still alive. That was the best two things we thought of and obviously you just rained on them. I think the mom is sick that's why he started crying and knowing she wasn't going to be there in the future.

How can Robin not be attending her daughter's wedding? Robin can't have kids. Would be a stretch to say Robin and Barney adopted and then Robin died.

I just keep going back to the scene last year when he knew how he'd spend his free night. He runs to meet the mom just so he could have 45 more days with her. I really think the mom dies. Maybe no one dies, but if someone does, I don't see how it isn't Mrs. Mosby

If she dies, I will feel like I have wasted the last 9 seasons watching the show. It's a comedy. I want a happy ending not some depressing life goes on lesson. I get enough of that in real life!

I can't believe I forgot about that.... I will have to re-watch last season regarding the 45 day thing. Which episode?

EDIT: Season 8 episode 20 The Time Travelers

Yep, the first time I saw that scene I immediately thought "The mom is dead when future Ted is telling the kids".

They could be throwing a huge swerve but it's going to have to be a big one.

I think it would be kind of cool if a show, for once, didn't go with the same cliche, formulaic ending that nearly every other sitcom does. I would have never pegged this show as being the one to do it though.

You can tell they took a break in filming, because even though this episode is supposed to take place the day after Lilly and Marshall had their big fight and she stormed off, Marshall is now about 10-15 pounds heavier.

If Robin and Ted end up together, it kind of makes it odd that she is always referred to as Aunt Robin to the kids. I don't know if I see that happening.
