How I Met Your Mother

It was pretty easy to see exactly this ending coming, IMO. I think even as early as last season they have been dropping hints about the mom being dead, and this show has never been the sort that was going to leave Ted alone and miserable. The Ted/Robin storyline has been the central thread of the show all the way back to the pilot, so once you knew the mom was going to be out of the picture, that pretty much left one option.

Yeah good job telling me to quit watching after they air the finale.

Just because I don't praise the show non-stop doesn't mean I should get to voice my pleasure or displeasure. And look around, I'm not the only one who thinks the ending sucked.

good job totally missing my point. And look around, I complained about the ending. You just took it over the top, like you have for half of this thread.

Why am I "over the top"? Because I thought something sucks that you don't?

I'm sorry I don't unconditionally love the show you obviously are much more into than I am, but as I said, to me it was bad writing to build up Barney and Robin's wedding for an entire season to just destroy it in minutes.

I have no probelm with the mother dying, though I think in the end they rendered her pretty meaningless. I wouldn't have had a problem with Ted and Robin getting together had they not beaten that into the ground, and not so sloppily had it happen.

Lol, again going over the top since you can't admit the simple fact of what I'm actually telling you. You're something special huh?

Has been my favorite show for awhile.

Thought the ending was terrible. Essentially wasted this whole season.

I agree... below is my post in this thread from over two years ago. I obviously didn't predict Ted getting married and then having his wife die as part of this comedy series, but Ted and Aunt Robin getting married seemed to always be the ultimate destination.

So... Ted ends up marrying Robin. But since Robin can't have children, he meets his children's "mother" by being introduced to a surrogate. And, since Robin had told Kumar that she never wanted to be a mother, she agrees as long as the children will refer to her as Aunt Robin.

Any other questions?

That was my issue with it.

Spend season after season searching for this woman...find her, insinuate things were great, aaaaand she's dead.

You forgot the part about how Ted finally meets the woman of his dreams, and then has two children with her while not marrying her for 7 years. Really? They made a big deal about how he called her the very next day after he got her number, but he waits 7 years and two kids later before he marries her? This show clearly lost its writers several seasons ago and the new ones are horrific.

I have probably not watched a dozen episodes of the entire series and that was probably here and there during syndication runs.

I tried watching this last season and only made it two or three episodes. However because of all the rumors etc. I DVRed the finale and watched it to see how it would end and I have to say it was good up until the last 3-5 minutes.

Had the kids shown a little more sadness at the story of how he met there mother. I would have been more okay with it but it seemed like they didn't even care about her.

It should have ended with him telling them the story before she died or before her funeral and dropped the whole Robin thing. Maybe they could have had her just show up shortly after he told the story and she just held his hand as he was grieving.

It certainly don't rank up there with M*A*S*H* or Cheers as for as comedic finales go. IMO

It was definitely a more Seinfeld-esque finale than those 2. I mean both shows brought every major aspect of the programs into their final show only to have the last 3 minutes be disappointing.

I'm a lot like you. The wife and I watched most of the first season when it originally aired and enjoyed it for the most part. We sort of lost track of it after that. We would occasionally catch an episode or two here and there but were far from following the story. I personally thought the show got way to slapstick as went on and I barely laughed at any of the gags.

Anyway, the wife really wanted to see the last episode so we watched it last night. As the casual viewer I can't say I was disappointed. It was very predictable.

I wonder how hard it was for those 2 kid actors (who are in their mid 20s now) to have kept that secret for 8 years. They said they filmed their ending parts in early 2006. I also think Josh Radnor said he was the only cast member that knew the ending, which they told him that then too, but his part with the kids at the end wasn't filmed until this year.

Also interesting the creators said that if the show hadn't been picked up for season 2, or if even if it had just gone 2 seasons or so, they had a plan B that Victoria from Season 1 was going to be the mother.

I agree with one review I saw that basically said the sour taste of the finale didn't undo the years of great moments.

I guess another thing I don't get is after stretching out the wedding that long all season, why then rush so much stuff in the finale?

Crappy writing. This whole season was abysmal.

they way they decided to do the finale, it could have almost been a 2 hour show and been a bit better...

How about that!

Who wants to bet its better than the one they went with??

How I Met Your Mother Alternate Ending on Complete Series DVD

How I Met Your Mother Alternate Ending on Complete Series DVD

The catch? Fans will have to wait for the How I Met Your Mother: The Complete Series on DVD to see it.

Here's what Bays had to say (via his Twitter) earlier today: "First of all I want to say thank you for the lovely messages from everybody who loved the [HIMYM finale]. If you didn't like the finale, I guess that happens. We tried something and it didn't connect with you. I hope we're still friends.

"So anyway, here's a bit of news: 16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings. We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We're going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother."

Thomas had a similar statement prepared, adding, "There is always a Plan B. We stand by what aired and we are proud of it. But you guys came on such a long journey with us -- we want to give you BOTH!"

Both Thomas and Bays then linked to an image of the complete series box set set:

No word if the set will also include those alleged 18 extra minutes that were cut from the hour-long final episode (although that seems likely).

In the mean time, some fans can now rest easy knowing that there is another ending heading their way this fall.

Update: Bays has tweeted a clarification that the alternate ending will also be available on the Season 9 set on its own, besides the Complete Series set, for those looking only looking to buy the season.

This bump is legen...wait for it....dary!

I just finished this show after 3 months of periodically binge watching. Loved it, disliked the ending but oh well.
