It'll be interesting to see what the expectation ends up being around a 12-team playoff. Like the NCAAT, I imagine for the big programs just making the playoff won't be good enough. If DeBoer makes the playoff every year for 3 years but wins only say, one game, especially if he's coming into it not as a high seed, I bet he gets fired. He might need to make the title game or win a title within his first 2, definitely 3 years to keep his job.I don't know how long KD ultimately lasts but there is a good chance it is 5 plus years especially with the expanded playoff.
Winning championships is ultimately all they care about. Take what you're saying to its logical extreme. If he goes 2-10 but the 2 wins are against Tennessee and Auburn, are they happy? It isn't the key.
If he goes 6-0 against Auburn and Tennessee in 3 years but loses random other games that keep him out of the playoff, he'll be fired. In fact, he probably wouldn't even get 3 years in that scenario. If he goes 3-3 against Auburn and Tennessee over 6 years but wins the SEC, makes the playoff, and wins a national championship, he won't be fired.
If he doesn't win titles, their fans will not be happy, regardless of his record against Auburn.
Yeah he'll be "hearing it," but not fired. Especially if he's playing for or winning national titles.I mean, yes there are exceptions. 2-10 will get you fired at even Vanderbilt eventually. However, if he is going 10-2 and making the playoffs, but losing to Auburn and Tennessee, he will be hearing it.
Yeah I would assume that he needs to at least make a playoff title game by 2nd year to appease bama fans. Expectations won't change much even with Saban gone. The guy can obviously coach but odds are it won't be in the same realm as Saban's teams were year in and year out. Recruiting probably takes a small step back as well meaning they are still in top ten but not top 3.It'll be interesting to see what the expectation ends up being around a 12-team playoff. Like the NCAAT, the expectation will be to make playoff runs, not simply be one of the final 12. Had a 12-team playoff existed when Saban took over, Alabama would have never missed it except for his first season. If he gets in it and craps out quickly, they'll consider that almost as bad as missing it entirely. That'll be the assumption they operate under, IMO.

If he goes 4-0 against Auburn and Tennessee over 2 years, winning by an average of 28 points a game, but misses the playoff both years, he'll be fired so fast it'll make your head spin. His good performance against rivals wouldn't save him.
The roster he is inheriting is good enough to make a 12 team playoff next season. If he fails to do that, then I am ecstatic with the hire by bama.I do think the administration (and even the fans) will have more patience than people are leading on. I don't think it will be 3 years and no title, he is gone situation. Now if the overall records are bad, yeah. I think dipping to 8-4 or 7-5 regularly will get him fired. Basically with a 12-team playoff, he probably needs to make it at least once every 3 years.

KD will have arguably the most talented roster in the SEC to coach with Milroe returning as well. I disagree about bama's talent level. They lost to the national champs by 7 points while Deboer's Washington team got their azz handed to them losing by 3 TDs. The level of talent along with depth will be hands down the best he has had as a HC.True but most coaches struggle in year 1 because they have to implement their system. We will see. I don't think Alabama's roster is that good as well. They should have lost to Arkansas, Auburn, and Tennessee this past season. They struggled to beat USF. I know that on paper they are 5 stars but they didn't look like it. Saban's talent level dropped the last 3 years. This is something that happens often. Tennessee's early-to-mid 2000 teams were, on paper, supposed to be better than 1990s teams but they sure didn't look like it. I think Alabama was facing a dip.
You think he just needs to make a 12-team playoff once every 3 years? Alabama fans will not think finishing in the top 12 every single year is too much to ask. Hell, I think Heupel should be able to make a 12-team playoff probably once every 4 or so years. For Alabama 1 in 3 would be nowhere near good enough.I do think the administration (and even the fans) will have more patience than people are leading on. I think if he missed the playoff next year, there would already be serious calls for him to be fired. He probably wouldn't be, but he would come into year 2 on a huge hot heat. If he missed the playoff again in year 2, he'd absolutely be fired. If he missed it in year 1, made it in year 2, then missed it in year 3, I think he'd be fired unless he went all the way in year 2.
As much as Alabama fans are trying to and need to moderate their expectations, it will be nearly impossible for them to. I think he will be held to a standard that is just a little below what Saban delivered, not much. DeBoer will not be able to go long without at least sniffing a title.
Well,it’s widely known Saban handled the politics boosters directly and bluntly! Most people, most coaches even, aren’t even close to Saban’s personality and demands! You can bet everything you own that those boosters will start testing the new head coach! And with the NIL added it surely seemed like Saban was tired of it finally! DoBoer has ZERO clue what he’s getting into!I don't know anybody, even the biggest Auburn fans, who thought Harsin was going to be a home run. It was a weird fit from the very beginning.
The determining factor for DeBoer will be, very simply, is he seriously in the mix for national titles every year. With a 12-team playoff, it goes without saying he needs to be in that playoff every year and win at least one game. Him missing the playoff one year might be a fireable offense. The extraneous, political stuff only matters if you aren't winning enough. Saban handled the political and booster stuff well because he won so much.
That would be gloriousRay Perkins lasted 4 years after Bryant. I chose that one. I’m looking at Bama’s schedule and they play Wisconsin, Tennessee, Oklahoma and LSU on the road plus UGA at home. Their best players are hitting the portal. I think next year could be ROUGH for Bama, by their standards. 8-4/9-3 and no playoffs would not shock me.
