hunter being hunter

He is who he is at this point. Only time will tell if her grows a set and plays up to his potential.

Tough crowd! The criticism that Hunter is getting will make him think about field position in the future. Either that, or he becomes mentally crushed!

Don't get me wrong, I want Hunter to succeed in the NFL, but i believe he's not going to shake off the drop passes curse. At times last season, i think bray could have thrown him a beach ball and he would have dropped it. Especially when the game was on the line. The NFL will not be as forgiving for Justin. Hope he does well.

I just don't see the point in starting a thread like this..... You all should be happy for him instead trying to put down a VFL, especially after all he had to go through.

From a clinical view: a whole lot of passive aggressive in this thread. IMO Good coaching will make JH an above average WR w/in 2 NFL years.

He was a beast his sophomore year before he got hurt against Florida. He has the tools to be a monster. Sometimes it takes guys a little while to recover after an injury like that. He's no Cordarrelle. But he could be solid in the NFL. Like Meachem.

I thought he was drafted a little high though.

Agree with all except the meecham comparison. Meecham was mostly quiet his first couple of years. Then he exploded as a jr. The lsu game comes to mind. Also was great against cal. Hunter was great at the end of freshman year and early soph. Never has returned to form. The crazy thing is...he's so explosive he can almost get open at will. Yet he is horrible after the catch (granted he even catches it at all). He almost always retreats before just flopping to the ground. Hopefully he finds his mojo. He's an insane athlete. And a true vfl

I couldn't find the Tyler Bray topic that I seen on here earlier so I thought this would be the next closest place. I was just wondering if there was any kind of way to watch the Chiefs game online tonight.

did you see the catch and retreat? everybody from teammates to announcers are killing him for it.

I posted a few weeks ago on how he disappointed me while he was at UT (post injury). Sry ppl, but facts are facts and he blatantly avoided contact after his injury. call it what you want to call it but it broke my heart to watch a volunteer give up like that.

Ive never seen a juke where someones whole body goes limp immediately

Don't get me wrong, I hope he makes it to the NFL Hall of Fame. But, you are right, it seems like he just gives up and goes limp before contact or bolts for the sidelines, to avoid getting injured again!

Patterson's tearing it up. He's already got over 100 all-purpose yards in his first preseason game (and its not even halftime yet).

The injury changed him in that he seems to play to avoid contact now. That will not fly in the NFL with all the money they are giving him. I hope he can cope with physical play.

Then wheres the love for Bray? Hes a VFL....people wanna say his effort was lacking and dog the hell out of him when they have no proof, but Hunter gets a free pass when it was very apparent he wasnt giving his all?

He COULD have been the go to guy that changed games. But he CHOSE not to.

I hope he does great in the NFL and I think he will, honestly, but there wasnt anything special about his play as a junior

I think some people are misunderstanding the whole situation. The team and coaches are busting his balls for doing his little back step mainly in attempt to get more yards after the catch and possibly bust the play open. I think since his injury he has played a little scared and timid at times and when he catches the ball its always going to be in the back of his mind so that may play a minor role in his so called "retreat". I don't feel he is retreating for the sole purpose of getting away from the big hit that is sure to come. He is not shying away from the contact because he is scared of being tackled. They are just trying to teach him that stuff like that doesn't work to well in the NFL. I hope he figures it all out in time to get it all together and has a great career. I would love nothing more than to see Hunter be a star in the league for the Titans, but I am skeptical that will ever happen.

Disagree completely. He (post injury) almost always retreats before ultimately flopping on the ground. It's how he avoids contact. Most players catch the ball and immediately head downfield. If there's a defender there they lower their shoulder and drive forward for as much yardage as they can get. That's not what hunter does. I'm not trying to bash the kid. Just stating the obvious. A great wr plays with a wreck less attitude putting themselves in harms way. It comes with the territory.

If you watch his highlights his back step is an attempt to avoid being tackled by the first man in order to try to break the play open. This just so happens to help avoid contact because like I said injury is always going to be in the back of his mind. I would agree that avoiding the contact is a little part of his retreat but trying to create something is the biggest reason for it. I agree that if your a yard or two short you should put your head down and try to drive threw for the first down and he will have to learn that the hard way. However if you have made a big play for a first down or just not even close you should protect yourself at all costs. Playing wreck less will get you hurt in a hurry. Look at Jerry Rice, the greatest WR ever to play the game. Did he play wreck less or did he get down and out of the way? He just about always went out of bounds before getting hit when he could of most likely picked up a extra yard or two most of the time if he had of stayed in bounds.

It is my opinion that some of Justin jumping back and retreating was the result of him trying to be like CP last year. You think about and CP goes backwards a lot only to wiggle out of it and end up turning it into a big gain. Justin does not have great lateral quickness but instead is more straightline fast and of course an exceptional leaper. I can't explain the drops last year any other way than the injury but just my opinion that he got into going backwards last year somewhat as a result of trying to be like CP. I do know as a sophomore before the injury I thought he was the best WR in the country.
