Hyatt opts out of Orange bowl - headed to NFL

This was a no brainer, but I think he wrestled with it at the same time. This guy loved playing college football.

With Hyatt I think it was a case where he (personally) had absolutely zero to gain and everything to lose. If he had played it would only had been for his team and just to play.

I don’t know him, or his situation; however I firmly believe it wasn’t an easy decision. I believe he is a team player and loves those guys……….why else would he do the NIL he did.

As much as we (fans) hate it, and I’m sure he does too……he had to weigh out everything and understand he had to do what was best for him.

If he signed the contract as an NIL deal, the company would need to abide by the law. The article speculated that his NIL deal may no longer be valid if he chooses not to play but under the law the NIL deals can't be applied to playing.

I'm just pointing out that if he's turning pro the state NIL laws and NCAA regulations for college athletes would not apply to him.

quitters are NOT VFL's

Jason Witten
Eric Berry
Jamal Lewis

Among many, many others all left Tennessee with eligibility remaining. Did they quit too? Are they not VFL’s?

You certainly aren’t a VFL nor am I………Hyatt certainly is. Try telling a player that crap.

I’m a VFL at “heart” and maybe you are too…..,but that’s it……at heart.

They won't now no, but he seemed to have signed the contract under NIL regulations.

Damn that really puts us in a tight spot....I understand going pro but I was hopeful he'd play in the bowl game. Oh well congrats young man thanks for the memories #11 🍊

I don't mind the decision to leave early for the NFL- but had hoped he would finish the season he started. I wonder if Tennessee had made the playoffs if the decision would be different or the same.

It will not be long before players sit out of those as well.

It’s the new normal. Not a shock and what I expected. It’s the smart move with millions of dollars waiting. Good luck Jalin!

Interesting. So would UT have to pay for potential lost revenue / exposure to the sponsor due to Hyatt not playing?
TN would have NCAA problems because the school cannot permit "pay for play" NIL deals for their players by NCAA rules AND the school is responsible for keeping up with the NIL deals, reporting them to the NCAA, etc.

And no, the school is not at all responsible to the sponsor nor involved officially with the sponsor by NCAA rules.

I guess players are different now - Peyton Manning played his entire last year. Trey Smith played his entire last year. Barnett played his entire last year. The players did not opt out of any game, even bowl games.

I think you can understand the decision, but also be upset that he is quitting on his team before the biggest post season game we've played in over 15 years.
Welcome to modern college football. This ain’t 1950. It is NFL lite. These guys are going to protect their interests as they should with life changing wealth for them and their families on the line. Forget that “quitting” junk. He has laid it all out there for several years and deserves everything that comes to him. Next man up.

Was thinking this afternoon: what is the difference in a bowl game and a playoff game, in terms of career potential? Why would a guy who would sit out for a bowl risk playing in up to 3 additional playoff/championship games?

Enjoyed watching the young man play on Saturday. Hope to see him often on Sundays.
Good luck to him.

So basically, the NIL which was specific to Hyatt, becomes void now.
Unless Spyre and other sponsors are rock dumb, and they're not, those contracts are done by certain dates and/or for so many brand appearances (commercials, signings, etc) and, per NCAA rules, not based on playing.

Unless Heupel boots Hyatt from the team officially, he's still on the team (like Hooker) and still subject to NIL rules.

I too believe that he was one of the few ones who seriously weighed this decision. The kid was having the time of his life this year, and he has to know he will easily become an also ran at the next level. But he is betting on himself, and you have to give him props for that. I hope he lights those bitches up on Sunday’s.
