I’m OK with a raise for Heupel based on team rank

I don't mind paying him exponentially more than the $5 million he earns now provided the terms of the contract give the University a fair buyout clause for both parties. I don't want to see a Jumbo Jimbo buyout.

It was our money at one point.

I was getting ready to say... It IS our money isn't it? Donors, taxpayers... It's not all football revenue. Or maybe it IS now. SEC sharing and TV money is a helluva chunk of dough! I read somewhere a long time ago that UT's AD was 100% self-sufficient. I wonder if that's still the case.

I would just ask him what he wants. Money, a new office, new facilities, a new house, whatever. Not everyone is motivated by just money. Let him decide and give it to him. There has been nobody better for Tennessee football in a long time.

Taxes do not pay his salary. It is not State appropriate money

“Based on team rank” you say?

So like 4th to 6th highest paid coach in the country?

Here’s the thing. When we win it affects everything from game attendance, UT apparel and UT paraphernalia sales, school attendance, local businesses thrive and more. We have a keeper. This isn’t the time to be greedy. $10M a year. That’s good for 5th and puts him just ahead of Kelly, Fisher, Tucker (WTF Mich St?), Day, Rhule (again, WTF?) and Kiffin, who are all $9M+. I’d take Heupel over every one of them so pay him.

A raise, yes - paying him like he already won the NC? Slightly insane. $8 mil. a year would be fine. Kiffin came close to the playoff last year; Fisher has a NC; Kelly has made not one but multiple playoffs, as has Day. Heupel did a great job this year and deserves a raise; hopefully we can avoid our past nonsense of overpaying out of panic before we've actually arrived at the destination.

Kelly, Fisher, and Day all have more of a track record in recruiting than Heupel, and two of those outrecruited him this year.

So Kiffin deserves his pay because he came close to making a playoff but Heupel doesn't? Weird

$9M range, give or take depending on how the incentives are structured. There's no way he's going to be paid less than Stoops and Kiffin with the job he's done.

The last one I saw was from 2019 (I think) Tennessee made like 90 million after expenses.

We’re not paying for coaches salaries. Why do folks even think this?

Heck the football program even floats all the other non money sports along with all kinds of other stuff too.

In truth we don’t know who truly out recruited who just yet. But I get your points. GBO!

Heupel came closer than Kiffin and Heupel laps Kiffin.

Edit: Yes, I say pay him a little over market. What’s another million or two? He’s doing great things for this school and town even if he never wins it all. And if we go by NCs then the only coach we should have ever paid since the 50s is Fulmer. And why is Stoops getting $9M? You can’t pay Heupel less than that man.
