I admit it. I'm getting optimistic about the Gators.

Are all of your players majoring in Crime?

Someone needs to tell Mcelwain he's not filming "The Longest Yard" down there. It's actually a real CFB team.

But I do think they need some barbed wire fencing around the field in the swamp. For the safety of the fans.

hey atleast Callaway is finally getting a 1 game suspension, it just took what 4 off the field issues?

I think it is time to delete this thread with all "credit" to the originator!
:D

I'd be more optimistic if Callaway were off the team. No amount of talent is worth the constant hassles in dealing with this idiot. Smoking pot a couple of times is probably more testament to him being unlucky in getting caught, as I suspect 90% of the players at all schools do so and he's a fool for doing it in circumstances where he can be caught doing it.

But defrauding the university like that when you know you are under a microscope is just so stupid I can't get past it. Dump him, let him go to Ball State or something and be a second round pick. He might learn something.

This.

I don't care if Callaway plays another down for UF, simply because Callaway doesn't care either.

I think kicking a guy like him off the team for smoking pot and getting caught a couple of times would hurt recruiting. Not because all the players plan to do so, but because it gives an impression of being harder on the players than other students (not that there is anything wrong with that).

But this latest episode, no, I think the opposite. I think it could only help recruiting because it let's players know that you are serious about developing them into NFL picks, including character.

Maybe I am naive about that. But so be it.

Student athletics receiving cost of attendance, with access to academic resources regular students don't have, should be held to a higher standard of behavior.

There's been a real sea change on the Florida boards. In years past, when talented players got into trouble like this, Gator fans made excuses, just like so many other teams' fan bases in similar circumstances.

But I'm seeing it run about 4 or 5 to 1 now, of people wanting this guy gone. He's not worth it.

Sounds like you're looking for Champions of Life that can play football.

I'm looking for a sense of pride in how you conduct yourself. I'm looking for players that, even if cocky and arrogant, at some level realize what a privilege it is to be playing at that level, at that kind of school, in this kind of league. And who take pride in that as much as anything else.

That's the message that needs to be cultivated. And not just at UF.

We still have our share of Harvey Updyke mouth breather types whose self-esteem is directly related to our W-L record...take Waco for instance...but for the most part you're right. Fans are over the sense of entitlement and repeated chances being given to kids who don't deserve them.

I agree. The funny thing it's usually the superstars that will make millions at the next level that get in trouble.

This. I feel the same about any talented player (UT or not). Virtually all offenses in college from athletes are weed. I don't have a problem with it but it is illegal. If you are doing something bigger, then you are focusing on the wrong thing as a player. Your time could be much better spent working out or studying film. Smoking weed with your buddies is one thing but getting busted for the third time on something with fraudulent funds is something entirely different. Come on dude.

Having Aaron Hernandez associated with your university will do that. And I'm not even taking a shot at Florida for that.

Hernandez obviously wasn't a murderer while he was a Gator, but you have to wonder how many times his reaction to various problems might have been a clue that he had issues that needed professional help.

Why do you say that's obvious?

We know about the 2007 Gainesville bar fight.

We know about the 2007 Gainesville double shooting that capped one guy in the arm and the other in the back of the head (neither died).

So maybe he was a murderer even back then....how many unsolved missing person cases in northern and central Florida from the 2007-2009 period?

I wouldn't say it's obvious. I'd say it's unknown. Or, if you prefer, you can say that it's obvious he was not a convicted murderer while he was a Gator.

Tempering my optimism for the time being...word is Del Rio is leading the QB competition so far.

That's not good.

I'm not picking up the vibe that he's "leading." But I am getting the vibe that it's Franks and Del Rio who are leading the team and moving the ball best during scrimmages. Zaire looks like a guy who can do some serious damage in the run-option game, but as far as running the full-blown offense, it's Frank and Del Rio.

The best news is, it's shaping up that UF has three guys who should be able to move the offense, instead of one decent guy, and then we all pray if he goes down.

Any gator fan that tries to spin Del Rio leading the pack as a good thing...(See Jaws)...is fighting what we have dealt with for quite some time as Vol fans. We look through our rose or in our case orange colored glasses and see everything as half full to start the season. Its not like Del Rio was a world beater last year even when healthy. If he is the starter then I've got real concerns on what Florida can do this season. I think Florida is in a position Tennessee was in the last few years....the starting 22 can play with anyone. Its the other 63 that may cause you to lose some games because they are either not that good or just not ready to play yet.

I am going to assume that is because he makes less mistakes? He reminds me of Rick Clausen. Doesn't have the tools to be an elite player and doesn't do anything that makes you go "wow", but at least he might not screw up as bad as the next guy.
