For the most part, I can't stand the fans. It's not a stab at anyone on the boards, I just notice how incredibly ignorant our fan base is.

It's called fanaticism for a reason.

People are going to be unrealistic. People are going to have extreme and unreasonable opinions. People are going to have expectations that are VERY difficult to actually realize.

I have lived in the three different major metro areas - all having a big college fan base and two of them having multiple professional franchises. They are all far more similar than different.

Yeah, this board doesn't do a great job in representing vol fans, imho. I mean, most people here were defending Dooley until midway through this season. I've never seen fans of a major school act like such defeatist sheep before.

This board is a focus by fans of football and specifically one team. It is also a draw for people on the internet
Go to a game look at 100,000 fans and then try to classify a meaningful percentage of them as "ignorant"

Cannot help but believe that a big part of Vol nation is very young people. Those of us who have been watching the Vols for 50 years understand a little more what we are seeing. Not that we are any smarter , we have been there , done that.

Every vol fan that I know in person is not ignorant. They don't expect to win the sec next year. They just wanna see improvements. It's just easier to come on a message board and complain and act a fool cause your behind a keyboard. Most of the idiots on here wouldn't act like in person. They wouldn't wanna look like a retard. However there are exceptions to that, some people are just stupid. And I for one know alot of those people. I've met more idiotic rival fans than I have vol fans. 10-1 ratio. And I live in Tennessee. Cheer up guys

I love our fan base, but every large fan base such as ours will have those on the fringe that are extreme/unrealistic/idiotic/_____, but that will be found for almost all professional teams and a huge chunk of college teams. Those few don't represent the masses however.

This would be one of the comments that, in my view, helps sway that negative perception. You can't fault fans for supporting the coach and encouraging the team to turn things around. Although I did not agree with a lot of decisions that he made along the way, I supported him up to the Missouri game, and I would dare anyone to call me a sheep. All the defeatist sheep crap does is continue to divide the fanbase further. Same goes with the negavols crap as well. We need to figure out a way to have a genuine discussion without insulting each other.

He didn't say the fans are idiots. He said they are ignorant. And, it's true.

Some of the things stated on this forum alone about the chancellor, the AD, the coaching search, etc. are just outrageous. Obviously, many have absolutely no idea of reality, or they would not make them. It is obvious that they have absolutely on idea what they are talking about.

I think perhaps it is further being demonstrated by the Volnation's ignorance of the definition of ignorance.

Oh yeah, the anonymity of the internet doesn't help. People write a lot of things on here they wouldn't say to someone's face or even out loud in public.

It's kind of like a bad marriage. Sure, you were drunk and desperate when you married her. And yes, she's horrible. But, you try to make the best of it until the inevitable happens.

I agree 100% op. When the media does stories about your fan base being negative, you know you have a problem. Thread after thread, there is unbelievable ignorance on the part of some of these so called fans. "Were better off without Hunter," "Good riddance Tyler Bray," "CBJ is a terrible hire," "We should have looked at so and so as coach," it's just ridiculous. Get behind our team and be supportive people. You may not think it, but your a part of the rebuilding process as well. Talking s*** to recruits via Twitter and other social media outlets really hurts our chances landing said recruit, as well as any other recruit. Negativity on here is well received also, recruits and recruit's parents frequently get on message boards like these to see whats going on. If we are bashing our current players, former players, coaches, and so on, do you think they want to be a part of that?? Lets get behind our beloved Vols, and if you can't seem to do that, then GTFO!

There is a small percentage of idiots in any fan base. If you allow their existence to paint your perception of the entire base, then you are guilty of the same kind of ignorance you claim to hate. I live in Oregon and you should hear some of the idiots that call into the local sports radio shows. Every fan base has them. We are not unique in that regard.
