I love the Vols but...

Oh yeah, the anonymity of the internet doesn't help. People write a lot of things on here they wouldn't say to someone's face or even out loud in public.

Why not? It makes the unvarnished tee opinion of someone, devoid of politics and niceties, more likely to come out. Also makes the truth more likely.

For the most part, I can't stand the fans. It's not a stab at anyone on the boards, I just notice how incredibly ignorant our fan base is.

I don't know what we can be arrogant about. We have been terrible in every major sport for the last 10 years. except womens bball(but who brags about that). And you can count another 3 years of suckiness in there too. Im a vfl but I am not exactly proud to be wearing orange lately. We have no legitimate argument against any state remotely near us and the bammers are getting real hard to listen to without jumping off a cliff. But, that just my opinion:mf_surrender::mf_surrender::mf_surrender:

The perception of the fan base comes from reading these post. If not Where?

I've never started a thread for the sole purpose of called our fanbase ignorant like the OP, so not sure what you're getting at.

To borrow one of your favorite phrases, "Hey, lighten up. Just poking a little fun at you."

It might begin with the teaching of how to spell definitely

I am not trying to be the spelling police here but slamming UT fans here is just unbelievable
How about you walk into a police station and talk about how stupid police officers are and see how far that gets you?

Sorry Old Wise One!!! Oh by the way you DUMB A** I was putting Harvard in my blank!!!! :eek:lol:

27 likes. You might just be right. On a serious note, though, our fan base is no different from any other. The reason why you think we're so ignorant is because this is most likely the only fan base (or one of the few) you have any familiarity with.

If you think we dumb, you should read a few posts on the gatorsports forum.

That bunch makes us look like a bunch of Albert T. Einsteins!

Would the following post be considered ignorant?

"I've been pro Dooley for a while. The last few weeks wore that down. Now, I'm done. GTFO of our stadium"

Are you excluding yourself from the ignorant fan base? If yes why

Bringing up my comments about Dooley has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm saying. Your simply helping my case

I agree 100% op. When the media does stories about your fan base being negative, you know you have a problem. Thread after thread, there is unbelievable ignorance on the part of some of these so called fans. "Were better off without Hunter," "Good riddance Tyler Bray," "CBJ is a terrible hire," "We should have looked at so and so as coach," it's just ridiculous. Get behind our team and be supportive people. You may not think it, but your a part of the rebuilding process as well. Talking s*** to recruits via Twitter and other social media outlets really hurts our chances landing said recruit, as well as any other recruit. Negativity on here is well received also, recruits and recruit's parents frequently get on message boards like these to see whats going on. If we are bashing our current players, former players, coaches, and so on, do you think they want to be a part of that?? Lets get behind our beloved Vols, and if you can't seem to do that, then GTFO!

Excellent, my man!!:good!:

I love the Vols... but I hate the way Mike Hamilton, Jimmy Cheek, and Dave Hart have sold UT sports down the pike. Thankfully, Hamilton is gone. Hart and Cheek need to gone, as well.

I agree but its everywhere. Living in Bham and having grown up in Knoxville all 3 have some ignorant fareweather fans. Before Saban got to Ala and during the Shula and Dubose era fans were nowhere to be found except the true diehard ones. Now all of a sudden they are everywhere and some were fans of other schools that converted. The year AU won their NC you couldnt tell them a damn thing. I know it was in retaliation to the Bams, but was still annoying as all get out.

I don't know what thread you're talking about where I am "celebrating [a] win". Haven't been able to celebrate any such thing in a long time thanks to that Dooley guy you supported. And I've said many times that being right about the hire from the beginning is no comfort to me. I would have loved to have been wrong. (Plus, it's not like it's evidence of any skill or wisdom to be able to predict that Dooley would be a miserable failure. Any sane, logical person could tell that based on his previous record).

You can play the passive aggressive victim all you want, but the fact remains that the guys who came on here the last three years attacking others and claiming to be the better fans weren't the skeptics, they were the Dooley supporters. I've never proposed a "you're not a true fan unless..." argument, so maybe you have me confused with someone else.

I'm sorry we can't have a "discussion". I guess I didn't realize that's what you were looking for, since you started things off by attacking my logic. Then when I demonstrate the flaws in your argument, you now decide to play straw man games and just make up stuff I've said. If that's your version of a "discussion", I guess you're right, I don't have any use for it.

So you were offended because I said that Dooley supporters also wanted to win? Sorry about that, but it was true.

Unvarnished opinions are welcome, immediate, thoughtless and overly dramatic reactionary posts, especially the personal attacks on players, are not.

The ignorance represents just a small percentage.
Actually it is a fairly decent sized percentage but a minority all the same. It is really not that much worse as far as dumbness than any other fan base it just seems that our numb nuts are a lot louder and the mattress burning gets contagious fairly fast. Having an intelligent football conversation is next to impossible around here these days.

That sir is a myth. I have moderated boards like these for years. The truth is actually the last thing boards make more likely and when the truth is out its rarely the truth you'd want. Everyone grows 5 inches and gains 30 pounds of muscle by the mere act of logging on. You have a 50/50 chance anyone logging onto a board either goes deeper down the rabbit hole and becomes who they think they are in their head or actually becomes the person they are if no one was watching.

So yeah people will be more forthright often on boards because the filter is gone and they don't have to be "nice" because they don't fear reprisals. Because of that the guy that swears he'd turn the bag into to cops runs away with it.. because no one is looking. That opinion he would never say out loud in "good company" comes spewing out. Kinda like if you wear a white pointy hood how easy it is to say and do certain things.

Well actually that was your comment about Dooley and that's my point. Some would consider that comment ignorant. Where do you draw the line to say "their" ignorant but your not? Just because you don't agree with what someone else say's doesn't make them ignorant. Personally I think calling someone else ignorant is a sure sign of ignorance.

I think a lot of fans get on here to vent their frustration because they feel like it will be accepted more since this is a vols forum. I believe Tennessee has some of the best fans and some of the worst. This place tends to bring out the worst sometimes. I remember when Bama was crap a few years ago and their fans seemed just as bad. If Tennessee gets turned around and becomes competitive again im willing to bet it will be a much more pleasant place.

All great fan bases implode when things are bad. Bama, UGA, LSU have all been through what we're going through. Apathy is much worse

I compare it to drilling for oil. Eventually wildcatters realize its probably a dry hole and they pull up stake and move on. Trey Burton running 80 yds made me realize Tennessee was drilling a dry hole.....time to move on.

That is the exact moment i knew the Dooley hole was dry! Glad someone shared that with me.

The longest three years of a Bama fan's life are fifth grade... :dance2:

Yeah, and sometimes, some of the grammar and sentence structure from Vol fans tends to indicate that is a widespread problem. Be careful who/what you point your finger at... there's always three pointing back at you.:nono:
