I love the Vols but...

This would be one of the comments that, in my view, helps sway that negative perception. You can't fault fans for supporting the coach and encouraging the team to turn things around. Although I did not agree with a lot of decisions that he made along the way, I supported him up to the Missouri game, and I would dare anyone to call me a sheep. All the defeatist sheep crap does is continue to divide the fanbase further. Same goes with the negavols crap as well. We need to figure out a way to have a genuine discussion without insulting each other.

If you look back on it, you'll see that anytime someone brought up a legitimate point about why it was a bad idea to hire a coach with a losing record, somebody was ready to jump in and insult them and throw out some Vollyanna sunshine crap about how it takes time and how no one else would take this job and blah blah blah. That's not supporting the team or encouraging anyone, that's just poor mouthing defeatist stupidity.

I've lived all over and I've never really seen that kind of "we shouldn't expect to win" mentality from fans of any other major program. That's what is annoying about our fans. If, on the contrary, you're annoyed by fans who expect to win or fans who want the best (as I suspect the OP is), then good luck finding another team to root for, because that's pretty much every major fanbase.

Yeah, this board doesn't do a great job in representing vol fans, imho. I mean, most people here were defending Dooley until midway through this season. I've never seen fans of a major school act like such defeatist sheep before.

Apparently, you have no friends who were Illinois football fans under the Zooker.

It looked something like this in his last year:

To the midpoint of the 2011 season-
"OMG, we're 6-0!"

At the end of the 2011 season-
"We're 6-6 and just BARELY made a bowl... we should stick to basketball."

The problem with this argument is it does not follow any true logic. For the most part, there was never this idea that those of us who supported Dooley expected to him to lose. I, for one, expected the team to win each and every game and I was sorely disappointed with each loss. Did I think some games would be harder and take some real coaching and playing for us to win? Certainly, just like some games should have been fairly easy for us to handle. But, I never said (and don't think I ever read anyone else saying it either) since I like CDD, I'm ok with losing. That is just stupid to put on any of us.

I stepped off that train during the Missouri game. Up to that point, my view was that all the decisions were made as part of a desire to win. When we let the clock run out to go into OT, it seemed that desire was gone from the team and that flowed from the HC. So, therefore, the second it appeared he no longer wanted to win, he lost my support.

Umm, Illinois has never been a major football program.

I was in Florida when they hired Ron Zook though. Most of the fans hated the hire immediately and let it be known. They never got behind him, and demanded a winner, and it worked out pretty well for them.

Are you being disingeuous or did you not spend much time on this board this season? Plenty of Dooley defenders argued that TN fans shouldn't expect to win anymore than what Dooley was doing (i.e. the worst conference record in school history). If that's your version of "logic", then I'm very sorry for you.

Too bad you couldn't recognize until after the Missouri game that Derek Dooley was a terrible coach. I guess the 4-17 conference record was a little too ambiguous for you? Or was a repeated history of failure okay, as long as it still seemed, to you, that he "wanted to win"? Great logic there.

Well there are a lot of ignorant people on all boards. I may be one of them, I am not sure whether I am or not, but on another thread here someone mentioned the guy that said South Carolina's football program had as much tradition as the Vols. A year or so ago someone said Florida had been a power house for a century. I am 71 years old and I forget the many other things I have read. These are just two examples of ignorance. I must also say that I believe the majority on here are intelligent and do know what they are talking about.

I think the majority on here are younger folks who have only known good times prior to the recent adversity. That would explain a lot of the opinions posted here.

For the most part, I can't stand the fans. It's not a stab at anyone on the boards, I just notice how incredibly ignorant our fan base is.

Ignorance is common these days; and getting worse. When you have a 24 year old American High School grad that doesn't know France is a country----you have a problem. (Kelly Pickler) Google obama supporters on youtube---outrageously stupid.

I can tolerate the ignorance because everybody is ignorant about something. It's the arrogance that both ticks me off and saddens me. Especially when a certain faction takes pride in their arrogance.

I mentioned above that I might be one of the dumb ones, but I was not sure. That is the problem with dumb people. They are the only ones who do not know they are dumb.

The ignorant fans are louder than the good ones. Pretty sure every fanbase in the world has the same problem we do...
