I think we backed right into the playoffs..

Tennessee will not get in over a 1 loss PAC or ACC champ. Still a higher probability that we miss the CFP.

There is no way that we're being jumped by Clemson or USC if we win out, given our strength of schedule, unless the committee just decides to screw us. That could happen--but it shouldn't.

We didn't throw the game. Georgia just has better athletes and we were affected by the crowd. I do feel better about the possibility that we could have over a month's time to game plan for them and have some new recruits available to practice while Georgia has an SEC title game and the possibility of injuries.

So....you think UGA deliberately lost to Bama in the SECCG? You think that was Kirby's big picture plan to win the NC?
Literally, almost every single Georgia fan around me thinks Georgia agreed to lose that game so the SEC could get 2 teams in. They can't accept still that Alabama just spanked them.

We won't get in unless everybody beats everybody else and UGA wins the SEC. We already played UGA, and just like last year with Cincy getting in ( I know, bad example) but UGA would curb stomp us again, so the committee will pick someone else to get curb stomped cause anybody left that plays UGA will get curb stomped. I say that cause they played like an entitled bunch of kids until we got ranked #1 the week we were playing them. They've been waiting for the playoffs to show how good they really are.

No one else had to go into Georgia's backyard and take the spot. Not sure i agree with backing in. Two games left to play. Don't put the cart before the horse.
I agree no other team would have gone to Athens that day and go back home with a win. Learn from it Vols and get better. Take care of your business.

The loser of OSU and Michigan will drop to 5 and that is our ticket no matter who else wins out... We will play Georgia on a turf field where I think our receivers will find much better footing and Dylan Sampson is coming along at the right time... It's almost like we threw that game to avoid a potential late loss in Atlanta... A loss that late in the Season and there is no chance we make it.... Since we were number 1...
We do NOT want Michigan beating OSU. If that committee has OSU and UT both with a single loss, I have no doubt....zero...who that committee chooses. Nope. UGA and OSU keep winning. OSU blows out Michigan. Anyone beats TCU and for good measure, someone knocks off USC. We get those wishes answered and I like our chances.

Well they might as well fold the whole thing then. Those teams play no one then when they do they lose. Tennessee lost to the number 1 team in the country. There isn’t a better loss, there isn’t a better win resume amongst top teams period end of Fing story.

Also I reject the framing that we would be "backing" our way into the playoff. Backing in means that you really didn't do that much to deserve it, you just happened to be the last man standing when everyone more deserving got picked off. Vols beat everyone on the schedule, including two top ten teams, with the single loss being to the #1 team on the road by two scores. If the Vols get in it will be on merit.

Mentioned it in a previous post, but people fail to realize the compensation incentives for these coaches include 1) in some cases beating certain conference teams 2) the number of wins above a predetermined threshold 3) reaching a bowl game and what that bowl game is 4) reaching CCG 5) winning CCG and so on with the CFP. These thoughts of losing games intentionally and coaches giving up incentive bonuses laid out in their contract are delusional.

Have to say though, I’m the biggest UCLA and Notre Dame fan the next two weeks. I don’t want to give the CFP committee any reason to let someone jump us.

Should OSU blow out Michigan, and then win the Big 10 Championship game with another impressive win, they could jump to the #1 position, pushing Ga. down to #2. If we come in at #4, we would then face OSU in the prelim, followed by Ga. for all the marbles. Hey. It could happen! 😎

I've thought about the Georgia game since the time expired in the 4th qtr. I've rewatched and noticed a couple of things about the game and by looking at each individual part, I came up with the conclusion: 1. No matter how the coach tried to prepare the team for the bright lights of that big of a stage they came out awestruck and tight as a banjo string. 2. The young men tried to compensate aggression (first series on D and O) for keeping cool, calm and focused. 3. When slapped with reality it made them try harder but became less focused and less efficient. 4. Last, they began to panic (especially the secondary) which led to mental errors. Couple that with Georgia's speed and power and the stage was set for a bad ending. To their credit they did settle somewhat and began to refocus but by then it was too late. If there is a rematch, it is my sincere belief the outcome will be much different. I don't know if the Vols would win but I do believe it would be a better contested battle.

I get what your saying but Ohio state has zero resume; same goes for UM. Whoever loses that game should be out of the top 4. TCU losing would be nice but we need to worry about USC right now.

Oregon needs to beat USC in their title game, UNC needs to beat Clemson, and TCU needs a loss somewhere along the way to remove all doubt.

Strength of schedule should be considered over a 1 loss conference champ getting in but I doubt that happens.

I dont think a single one of those other teams mentioned plays the Vols schedule and gets through it with one loss.

JMHO

I think some are overlooking the fact that it's possible for a 2 loss LSU team to jump TN even though TN beat them.

UGA beat us fair and square....But we need revenge...Nothing and I mean NOTHING would make my life more complete than beating those bozo's for the national title.
But if TN beats GA, wouldn't we need a 3rd game to settle who is better ? 1-1 would be a tie.

Losing like that is usually a good long-term strategy.

You would know. Since that’s exactly what happened last year. Of course most teams cannot rely on the team that destroyed you to lose their top 2 wide receivers allowing the team that got demolished in SEC championship to beat that team in the national championship. That probably isn’t a good strategy to bank on happening….
