I will give Martin this "we are in much better shape going into SEC play"

Is it me, or does the entertainment value of actually playing basketball games get overshadowed by the roar of RPI, good win/bad win, bubbles, and a few quadradic equations to determine who "deserves" the tourney? Is it really that big of a deal if we get in and lose to a high seed? Sorry, just seems like a soap opera overshadowing the sport itself.

We are in better shape RPI wise, BUT.
We've only played one true road game so far and that's been Martin's weakness.
Start 1-0 in conference and I'll feel a lot better about winning 12 games.

See my post above for evidence

Thanks, so your evidence backs up the rest of my statement from above. Our RPI as of now would have us just inside the tournament, near the bubble. Although this is an improvement from the previous years, with the amount of talent we have, improvement even with a subpar coach should be expected. So you have a subpar coach, with a team that has elite 8 talent, doing a subpar job.

I want Tennessee to win. I will watch the games always hoping they play to their potential. But, as with the last two years, the first half of the season has been underwhelming.

No you are wrong if you can't see the difference in starting SEC PLAY ain the 50s in the RPI then there is really no reason to talk to you.

Correct you are.

Once league play starts it becomes a lot harder to move that RPI needle.

We started at 78 last year and winning 11 games only got us down into the upper 50s, so around 20 points we were able to drop.

Going in a 54, 11 wins probably brings us down into the 40s, much better position than 58.

No doubt about it. I've said we beat LSU and we may really have turned a corner and have the type of year many hoped for. If we don't, still alive for the tourney but probably not getting in as easy as we hoped.

Unless I missed it the OP wasn't discussing our talent level, he simply said we are in better position, which by your own admission we are. If you want to discuss where we should be, and where the talent ranks, that seems like a completely different topic than what the OP intended for no?

I will say though, I disagree 1000% that our talent level is top 8 in the country.

You're right; it's not top 8 right now. Start blaming the guy that's coaching and developing them. It isn't because they lack the capacity.

Once again, there's plenty of threads where that is currently going on. Do you feel the need to turn this one into that as well, or can you accept it for what it is?

Whoever said our talent level is top 8 in the country has been puffing some serious potent dankage. I will say this though, the talent is good enough to where we SHOULD absolutely make the tourney at the end of the regular season with zero bubble talk.

Yes, I accept this thread for what it is: one man's opinion that was backed up by bleedingTNorange's facts. And on topic, I am saying that compared to the increased talent from last year to this year, we are not in much better shape going into SEC play. Yes, we are doing better, because we are a more talented and experienced team.

Really like to see us get seeded this season.
LSU would be a good start and a couple of big road upsets would guarantee it.
The team that beat VA could do it. (Don't think we see 60+% shooting very often but the intensity level on both ends)
Hope we see them again.

Lol.

The fury of the martin appologist will hammer any suggestion of the reality of his faults

I'm not in disagreement with any of this.

Last years team was probably more experienced, but that's another topic.

The OP said we are in better shape, the numbers back that up, that's it. He wasn't going on to do a player by player talent breakdown, he's saying this is the best position we've been in entering SEC play under Coach Martin...and he's right.

Wait until this happens on the football end...casualty of having playoffs...will be even funnier when the 4 team receipts come in and they go to 16-18 teams

No doubt.

That's what I said after UVA, you can't expect us to shoot that way every game. However, we could've shot 45% fg 40% from 3 and 75% from the line and still probably won by 20.

Bring that same style, intensity and focus on both ends and I think we will get in the tounrey easily.

Lol at Elite 8 talent. People want to get on here and bark about how CCM couldn't recruit a nun to an abbey, and now, all the sudden we have Elite 8 talent.

Fortunately for us, you seem to know more about the OP's thoughts than he does.

This. These threads get overrun with people making outlandish comments to justify their views. There is no way we have Elite Eight talent. But we have enough talent to get firmly into the Dance.

We have been playing our best ball of the season over the past three games. I include Tusculum because we still played well and were efficient in spite of the potential to come out flat and struggle early, which we did not. We shot well, passed well, took good shots, and valued possessions. We have succeeded in those areas, as well as defensively over the last three games now. If we can keep it up, and Martin continues to allow them to dictate tempo and push the pace even a little, I think we are talented enough to win the necessary games to play for seeding come SEC tourney time.
