I will give Martin this "we are in much better shape going into SEC play"

This. These threads get overrun with people making outlandish comments to justify their views. There is no way we have Elite Eight talent. But we have enough talent to get firmly into the Dance.

Agree. If we somehow play our way into the Elite 8, then our desire and game preparation far exceeded our talent level. I can literally rattle off 12+ teams I'd trade ours for right now (based solely on talent).

Lol at Elite 8 talent. People want to get on here and bark about how CCM couldn't recruit a nun to an abbey, and now, all the sudden we have Elite 8 talent.

ALL OF THE SUDDEN???? I have said this since the beginning the year. McRae, Maymon, Stokes, Barton, and Hubbs give Tennessee Elite 8 talent. If Calipari was coaching this team, who I despise and don't even think of as a great coach, this team would be in the Elite 8.

We have the talented players, but they are not being coached up and developed.

I know you said it before the season. I didn't agree with it then before I knew what we had in Barton, Hubbs, DThomp, and Davis. I still don't agree with it. It was as silly then as it is now, maybe more so now.

Absolutely. Yet if you somehow disagree that this team is uber talented and experienced you become a Martin apologist lol.

Lmao

Last years UK team had a hell of a lot more talent than this years Tennessee team.

This team has sweet sixteen talent.

Top 25 ranking should have been the norm every week.

Elite 8 is a serious stretch

You laugh at me for suggesting we should compete with the number 8 team. But then you agree with the guy that says we should not even be in the bubble discussion (which makes us about top 30 in your opinion). I am just soooo ridiculous and unreasonable to be 20 spots over your brilliant basketball pedigree. I mean, I shouldn't even really voice my opinion on a basketball forum! If anyone says that Martin is underperforming, that is just over the line. :pilot:

we have plenty of talent to win/have won 25 games and a sweet 16 run if gameplanned and coached like the last 3 games. Do that the first 10 games and we are talking about what seed we are rather than worried about LSU losing to Rhode Island that may determine our bid.

Competing with the #8 team and equating that to having top-8 talent are two different things. We can compete with anyone, but looking at the sum of all our parts, no one is going to pencil us into the Elite 8 on talent alone. We weren't even a top-25 preseason team, when our value was likely at it's highest. Doesn't mean we unequivocally won't get there, but there are at least 8 teams with more talent than us.

If you think the talent on this team is top 8 in the country then all I know to do it give you the benefit of the doubt that this is your first year ever watching college basketball. Because if that is not the case I have no idea how to justify that opinion. Its lower end 'Top 25' based on talent alone.

Sure. That makes total sense. We disagree with your Elite Eight talent comment, yet we must believe Martin is doing a wonderful job. It is easy just to say anything you want.

McRae would start on any team in the country. Maymon, Stokes, and Hubbs have the talent to start on almost any team in the country. Maymon has underperformed his expectations. Stokes, despite the double doubles, continues to underperform. Other teams, with better coaches, have highly rated players come in and contribute immediately. We have the talent and depth of a top 8 team. Are you seriously telling me if we had one of the top 5 basketball coaches in the country, this team wouldn't be 12-1?

Than the last 2 years. If we just do as well in the SEC regular season I now think we are in without being on the bubble.

That's all we can ask of the guy IMHO

Sad that your expectations are comparing this team to the two teams before them none of our teams have made the dance under this loser, and am pretty sure nothing is going to change this year.

You have convinced yourself our players are better than they are. That, or you're not aware of how many teams have equal or better talent. Without even looking at rosters I could name 10. Michigan, Michigan state, unc, Duke, Kentucky, Florida, Memphis, UCLA, Ohio State, Kansas. I would say most if not all of those teams have more talent.

You have convinced yourself that the way we play is indicative of the talent we have. I have no dislike of Martin, but with a better coach, we would have a better record, and appear to be more talented.

So in your opinion there's not a difference between the 8th most talented team and the 30th most talented team?

Why is the last sentence needed? Whether I support Martin, hate Martin, or am Martin...that doesn't make your statement any less ridiculous.

You hit the nail on the head. I purposely didn't bring up expectations. This was about where we are solely in regards to making the tourney this year.

Ok good deal, thought your OP was pretty clear, but maybe that's just me.

The funny thing about this "12 wins"....we won 12 last year including SECT and it wasn't enough...win 12 games this year and it's enough.

So yea, not the same, we are in better shape as you've said.

I agree there is a difference between the 8th and 30th most talented teams. The problem becomes when you belittle me for an outrageous opinion, pompously spouting off, while the difference is not unfathomable.
