I would rather be banned from NCAA tourney

With the exception of maybe Maymon, there isn't a single player on this team that would have seen 5min/game on Pearl's first team. Maybe if Pearl had left Martin the same talent he inherited things might be a bit different.

Once again if Martin woulda tried to roll up his sleeves and try to atleast talk to Tobias and Scotty, he would have some talent. The fact that everyone thinks Tobias was 100% gone was a joke. He always said later in the season that if Bruce was gone or let go he would lean more towards turning pro, but he would listen to the new coach if talked too. The fact marring could even nudge a little of Harris' confidence to think he might play for a winner speaks volumes on how Martin pitches himself to potential recruits. And we all hate Scotty and his inconsistencies but senior leadership is so underrated in college athletics.

We had two guys coming back that were respectable: Chris Lofton and CJ Watson....J Smith,D Bradshaw, A Patterson, and M Wingate had shown nothing up to that point. We had lost two of our top four players, Had no players of real note coming in and was picked to finish fifth in the SEC East. Pearl was great at adapting to what he had on the court and getting the most out of it.

I hope Zo can get the job done but he has to prove it on the court.
Scoring from 2004-2005
-----------------------------
Watson 17.26%
Lofton 19.18%
Patterson 10.71%
Bradshaw 4.16%
Wingate 7.02%
Asumnu 2.95%
Smith 2.25%
------------------------
63.53%

Now reverse that for Martin and subtract 10.

I bet that CCM would trade Pearl's inherited roster for his inherited roster in a heart beat. You actually proved my point..Pearl's inherited roster had heart and hustle that made for a great group to watch. They were that way REGARDLESS of the head coach.
Trying to inspire apparently lazy sreaky players much different task...Thanks :)

Bruce Pearl got a bad rap ...IMHO .. there were posters on here calling for his head and arguing with everyone who supported him.... but as soon as he is gone they leave have not returned... strange if you ask me

The other strange thing to me is the way the NCAA took down our BB program for a lie and we did not even receive a commitment from the player in question. Unlike other schools (Auburn) where actual money changed hands and they get by.... I will never understand

But to ask for Hamilton to do anything other than he did is even as crazy or strange... His hands were tied by the NCAA... BP would have gotten a show cause had the Athletic dept not canned him and we would be in worse shape than we are now..

I did not like what happened, I do believe the NCAA had some type of vendetta against BP and perhaps UT... what I don't know?.. but it was the only thing we could do.

It is now behind us .... let it go.... Cudzu for Conzo

Maybe they looked like they played with heart and hustle bc they had Pearl as a coach.....I am all for Martin but the Akron loss was totally unacceptable. Before Martin was hired they acted like his coaching alone could have made Hopson a first round draft pick but now he cant even lead this team over 1-9 Akron. I will give him his time to get his players but Im really worried that we are headed back to bing the laughing stock of the SEC.

Well, compare that to Martin's inheritance and tell me why we're complaining about losses:

Scoring from 2010-2011

Tatum 12.54%
Golden 3.91%
McBee 3.91%
Hall 2.10%
Maymon 1.56%
McRae 0.76%

I would rather be banned from the NCAA tourney for a year, be on probation for 5 years and lose scholarships and keep bruce pearl, rather than be a witness to our formerly strong program dieing before our eyes.

We have no excitement in the games, no passion, no intensity. Were not getting any recruits, TBA is quiet, the student section is a joke, and were probably not gonna make the tourney anyway. Do you have any serious interest in the team? Do you remember how CBP endeared us? He bought Pizzas for the students, played an exciting brand of ball that got us to come see what the fuss was, hovered around campus high fiving students and teachers. He bled orange. We werent a middle of the conference team anymore. We beat teams like Texas, Florida, Kansas, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Memphis, Kentucky and other power house schools. We were a top 25 team consistently and top 10 on a number of occassions. Never once missing the NCAA tourney.

All im saying is, I wish MH would have waited a couple of weeks and stand by the guy that made him his money. We should have taken the punishment from the NCAA, and went down swinging, playing like heck and be ready for when the NCAA tourney let us back. And I know many of you agreed with MH saying Bruce had to go, and you guys are (at least so far) Wrong. Without bruce, will we be a NCAA tourney team this year? Probably not. Next year? Borderline? Maybe?

I know you guys have friends that are UK, Florida, Vandy, and Bama fans. Ask them, does CCM scare you? With him at the helm, does tennessee make you nervous when you see them on the schedule? They will all say a resounding NO.

We gained nothing by letting Pearl go. We only lost everything.

So I ask you this, with the results you see now from the current team/staff. Would you have kept pearl if the NCAA banned the Vols for 2 years and probation for 4 years with 2 scholarship removed for 2 years?

Yes, because it would have kept the program alive and competitive.
I could'nt have said it any better

Whoever came in here was going to have a tough time following what Pearl did. The thing is Tennessee isn't known as a basketball school. No disrespect to Martin, but i highly doubt he'll be able to get the personnel in here to compete and beat the big boys of College basketball. He was another ho hum hire, just like Dooley.

Bingo :salute:

Our team was hustling at the first of the year. They seem to have fallen into and excepted martins philosophy.

Sorry I meant Austin Peay and typed Akron....I hate when I or anyone else makes a mistake like that bc it usually creates an hour and a half discussion about the typo, mistake or misspelled word. LOL

You have got to be kidding. You do know Pearl LIED to the NCAA is why we are in the position we are in now. Right. And looks like Pearl's recruits does not look too good. I guess that's why Stephen played alot.

This team wouldn't win regardless of the HC. The roster is devoid of talent. Yes we have kids that were 4*s coming out of HS but they never lived up to the billing.

I am sick and tired of people saying this. Cuonzo, based on talent going into the season, was left with alot more than Bruce Pearl was. Bruce was left with a team that won 14 games the year before and then made the tourney. He turned those guys into winners, not the other way around. Cuonzo, on the other hand, was left with four 4* recruits and lost to Austin Peay.

No - just no. Chris Loften, Jajuan Smith, and CJ Watson >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anyone Martin inherited.

The roster is not devoid of talent but it is not elite talent. However, we have more than enough talent to care of the Austin Peays of the world.

I understand what you're saying.
But Martin's philosophy stems on tough man-to-man and ball security.
The kids show the ability to play it, but not sustain it for 40 minutes.
Thus the ability to come back from deficits and then lose the game via poor ball security.
We're losing games by an average 0f 5.83 points and giving up 15.5 points off of turnovers.
Secure the ball, cut down on turnovers and sustain the defensive focus (even if you consider it mediocre) and we're winning games.

That's only true for Jajuan Smith.

Lofton was already a great freshman Buzz's last year and CJ Watson was playing in the NBA regardless of Pearl.

Yes Lofton was a good freshman and excellent three point shooter but noone thought he would become what he did.

Watson avg 11 points and five to six assists per game as a junior and was so highly thought of that he went undrafted. Watson worked hard and made himself into a Pro.

Bruce Pearl had to start a six foot four 3rd string PG as our PF for most of the season.

That team was no where near as talented as Bruce pearl made it become.

Exactly - Bruce isn't the one that made him a pro - he was a talent that went undrafted.

Lofton was going to be a star no matter who was coaching. If you honestly think differently its because you didn't watch basketball before Bruce Pearl and skipped the Buzz years. He got more spotlight though than he would have since he was playing on winning, successful teams.
