He got UW-Milwaukee to the tourney twice when they never even went to the NIT. How much talent does he need? He won with Buzz's kids and he won with UW-Milwaukees scrubs.
He was a good recruiter and coach.
It's amazing how the fan base has turned on Pearl.
"Pearlophile" is just another d'bag way to say "hater". Total cop out to make everyone believe everything is great. Obama is the best and the economy rules!!
Grow up... sometimes you gotta bend the rules and sometimes the truth is just the truth. This new aged "hater" crap will be the downfall of the world. At least people can shuffle and tebow. Amazing
I'm not sure what I said to spark this rant. I was responding to an obvious inaccuracy from a previous poster.
My feelings on Pearl:
1. He was excellent at motivating a team for big games.
2. His system was very good when he had his players to run it.
3. His halfcourt offense was ugly at pretty much all times.
4. His halfcourt defense was pretty good once he realized he needed to coach it.
5. He was a very uneven recruiter, with a few great lands, and a lot of busts.
6. He tended to just recruit the best athletes, which put him in the following problems at times.
A. No true point guard (true in three of his six years. We were 2-3 in the tournament in those years). Look at how many truly ugly plays we ran last year on the last play of a half/game. Comes down to this.
B. An offense that can't run his system (true in three of his six years. The result was terrible in year four, and then gave rise to point #4 in year five, which gave us a nice tourney run)
C. No leaders on the court (true in 2.5 of his six years, all of which were extremely frustrating. A three month span in 2010 when Bobby Maze and Wayne Chism stepped up were the exception to the rule in his last three years, and what a wonderful exception they were).
7. He made a stupid mistake that gave us no choice but to fire him. Anyone crying to have him back is being counterproductive to the rebuilding job we have ahead of us.
5, 6A, and 6C are still biting us in the butt right now. I think Cuonzo Martin will absolutely improve on failings in #3 and #6, and I don't think it's being unfair to Pearl to say that. Whether CCM keeps #4 strong and whether he improves on #5 will dictate how long he stays here.
Is this really an unfair position from which I ought "grow up"?
