If the SEC expands to 16 teams

Plus why add UVA when you can get the same things from VA Tech?
UVA is an AAU member. VaTech isn't.

From an academic cachet standpoint, it's no contest between the two. UVA wins hands down.

However on the football field, VaTech has of late certainly been more relevant than their bigger flagship university.

I think the ACC falls apart and the Pac, SEC, and then the two BIG whatevers are left over.

Perhaps. Just as likely imo...

But I still think Texas is like a 300-pound, err, make that 300-ton gorilla in the Big12 so that eventually, they will lead to it's implosion. Just look at the people they already ran off: Nebraska, Colorado, A&M and Mizzou.

There are only so many above-average teams in Texas that they can add, before it only become Texas and "the other little lone star state schools that no one wants"...

Here's my problem with that. Everything you just said holds true not only for NC ST, but for UNC as well.

So why would we not take UNC instead? Better academics. Better basketball. Better football. Better all around.

And NC State does not hold a veto over UNC leaving the ACC. The reverse is not true according to a prior post...

Then why not take WV and UNC instead of Duke? Both field very good basketball teams.

There's no way we take any school that would water down our football brand like Duke would.

We already turned down WVU. No need to add them unless we cannot pickup a team in the greater DC/VA/MD area (UVA or VT)...

WVU really does nothing the bring the DC market. They might be closer to DC than to Birmingham or Atlanta, but they might as well be in LA as far as interest in WVU sports in the DC market...

If we had a 9 game conference schedule we could have 1 permanent rival and 1 rotating. I think that's a big possibility. Although the coaches wouldn't be happy about only having 3 non-SEC games.

That would eliminate any big non-conference matchups---imo. Lots of ga st, Citadel, and sw mo.

VT and Duke would be my 2. UVA and NC ST would be fine too. ANY team entering the SEC will improve. We could add Ark St and they`d be a top 20 team within 5 yrs. So goes for Duke or Va. They would vastly improve by being SEC members. Quality of ftball at present should NOT be the topic. What benefits UT monetarily in the shortest time is the MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR. GO VOLS!

The big boys in the ACC are looking to join somewhere, and the ACC will absorb the best available of the Big East. FSU and Va tech would be the obvious football schools the SEC might entertain; and UNC and UVA probably the best all around. UVA offers new TV markets; NC doesn't ; except BB on a national level. Lot of scenarios.

it's all about money---the SEC can't increase media millions that much by picking up acc teams like va tech, nc, duke or uva.

If Duke and UNC will break from each other the I think SEC picks up Va Tech and UNC. The Big 10 would then take Ga Tech and Duke. I think most options will depend on whether UNC and Duke will split or stay together. If they stay together their only option will be the ACC. Then if they stay in ACC I see SEC with VA Tech and NC State and Big 10 with Ga Tech and UVA.

You are right about the money but very wrong about the markets. The Virginia schools give you the DC, Richmond, Norfolk-Tidewater and Roanoke markets. The NC schools give you the Raleigh-Greensboro-Winston Salem, Charlotte and Asheville markets. This would be hugh money making markets for the SEC!!

Would WV provide a share of the Philly market?

Lol UVA? Who would want UVA?

They are the two best public universities in our region, and not to mention---flagship universities for the only two states that are missing from the SEC footprint.

The fact that the B1G is hungrily viewing UNC and UVA as new members is reason enough for us to take them.

I could see how many people that post on this site would have a problem identifying value though. As an alumnus of the University of Tennessee, there are some dumb ****s up on this site.

We have to get to 16 eventually, and WV makes more sense than almost any other team out there. With the only exception being UNC or VA Tech.

Other than "they touch an SEC state," no they (WVU) really don't make more sense.

Why would you expand to water down your product? I don't think the SEC will expand unless it's going to benefit their tv deal, so it will have to be two teams worth adding.

Like Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, or West Virginia.

Adding North Carolina would send alot of Cat fans up the wall.

Why not add Houston and USF that would put us in the 10th and 13th largest tv markets

Schools too small and they really don't draw the markets they're already in overly well

Houston has to compete with all the bigger Texas schools; USF, with all the bigger FL schools

And we don't want two schools in the same state. Plus USF isn't some kind of sleeping giant, they have a lot of the same issues Miami does when it comes to fielding a competitive team.

Not if, but when the SEC expands to 16 teams, rest assured it will be in two separate states where no other SEC team currently resides. That's what makes Virginia Tech, NC State, NC, even Virginia so attractive. It's all about the 2 large metro markets in NC and the DC tv market in Virginia. However, UNC and Duke have committed to only move together, which excludes both schools from considerstion. That leaves Virginia Tech, NC State, and Virginia. It's all about TV dollars, and these teams tend to make the most sense. When the SEC Network officially kicks off in 2014, it will dwarf the Big 10 network in revenue, which is what pulled Maryland out of the ACC. Those SEC dollars will be too large for any school in today's economic times to turn down regardless of what they say publicly.
