If we go 4 - 8 this year, do we fire Hart and Cheek?

In the offseason, I asked a tongue-in-cheek question that if we lost 8 games for the first time in our history, would we fire Butch.

That should not happen under any circumstances. Let me be clear. Well, we might actually lose 8, but we should NOT fire Butch.

However, it is clear that the Kiffin-Dooley years have left a cloud hanging over us. Hart allowed Dooley to stay on as coach after Lexington even though Dooley quit when Randy Sanders beat him with a WR QB and 6 plays. We wouldn't have had to pay the buyout.

Also, Hart's coaching list. Butch was #4 and after being declined repeatedly, Hart jumped. The fact is, Hart was presented with Gruden and he turned him away. Hart has been the blind squirrel that finds an acorn, IMHO, with Butch.

Hart has been keeping very quiet as he should. I think he should be in the crosshairs if we go 4 - 8. Cheek is self-explanatory too. He has made no progress on his flagship goals since his tenure began. And he is not friendly with the AD.

If we go 4 - 8, do we fire Hart and Cheek and give Butch every opportunity to succeed?

IMO we fire Hart and Cheek if we go 14-0.

Both suck. DiPietro has no business getting a pass for letting a department at the university turn into this. He has been on board for all of it. Susan Martin's elevation to anything is problematic too. Anyone with such disdain for a department at UT should be doing no more than teaching some useless craphole liberal arts blather for an outsized paycheck relative to value.

There is no guarantee that we wouldnt have to pay the buyout. That is one persons word against another anad it would have been a long drawn out process that would give us more bad publicity. Lettimg fulmer go when we did and hiring kiffin have been the two worst moves. There was a lot of attrition from fulmer to kiffin. But kiffin lone recruiting class set us back. There are only 2 left from the class. Not only is that class horrible but there was no leadershop for classes that followed. The only person that needs fired is cheek. Simply because he doesnt do one thing for the good of the university. If butch leads us back then hart should get some credit for hiring him.

Agree with almost all of this. However, I think Hart has to take some responsibility for allowing Dooley back on the bus at Lexington (and dissing Gruden).

8 losses would be a first in our history.

Right now I am praying for 4 wins. Honestly, that is all I see and I am not real sure about South Alabama.

No way we lose 8. we can still beat Ky, South Alabama, and either Mizzou, Vandy, or Auburn.

I think we will beat 4 out 5 in those games and go 6-6, with a bowl game, 7-6 (3-5) in the SEC. Not great, but all things considered. Saturday is gonna be rough though. I hope we can play above our level and beat Fla, but just like last week, I just don't see it happening bc we are severly under-manned. Recruiting over these next few years is gonna be key.

Butch Jones is off to a real nice start.

We lose to the #2 team in the nation and now you're not sure about South Alabama??? A team we beat by 32, they beat by 7...

Gosh, just go ahead a pull the trigger, Mr. Depression.

Butch Jones can't afford to go 4-8, either. He'll lose several recruits, and he'll put himself on the hot seat next year.

He's got to find a way to win 5+ games, not get humiliated weekly on the stretch we're in now, and keep his recruiting class together.

I'd agree that UTK should never again hire another person based on their affiliation with Bama unless his name is Saban. Cheek may need to go. Hart can't do much more damage for the time being so there's no reason to get rid of him.

bringing up gruden every time something goes wrong is getting old fast.its like you guys are bailing on cbj.would gruden do any better with this team as it is now. l don't think so.i'm backing our coach 110%.he has the toughest job in the sec right now because most of teams we play are better than we are.that is why he says brick by brick.we need a foundation.go vols and have faith in CBJ.

Never should have hired Hart and Cheek should already have been fired.

This. Plus DiPietro - he should not get a pass either.

UT has been controlled by those from outside the state of Tennessee family for far too long. The desire to be rated highly by a magazine's self proclaimed experts to have access to more money sickens me. The mission of the university is to be a land grant to serve the citizens of the state first and foremost. Instead they lose sight of the mission and try to be something that was never intended and in so doing become just a number on a list.

That is not how it is done when you are true Volunteer.

Serious question: is that all you have is to attack the OP with profanity for a post you don't like?

Someone please explain to me the fascination with Gruden. I know he won 1 Superbowl but in his public demeanor he strikes me as smug and arrogant. I may be wrong and he may be a warm and fuzzy individual, but I can't imagine him connecting with 18-22 yr old players, fans, parents, donors and school administrators like Butch has. Do we know for sure that he can recruit and teach like Butch? Honestly I want to know if he demonstrated the traits that would make him a great college coach when he was an assistant.
