If Wilcox doesn't leave is Dooley still here?

Then send Wilcox a gift card or something, he sure did save TENNESSEE football by leaving and causing Dools to be gone and BUTCH CO.to be here.

And were in the 60s the year before that

The 3-4 doesn't really change anything for the secondary. UT's secondary was terrible last year. And it wasn't great in '11 either.

One of Wilcox's biggest complaints was a lack of CB's. While I give you the poor secondary play, they were not at fault in several games where we were blown up on the ground.

bamawriter I'm not saying we were good but we did rank 30th in total D before he left and a top 60 D last year would have been good enough to give us a shot at UGA, USCe, Missou and possibly Miss St.
There were many times where we would get in 3rd and long and only have 1 safety in deep coverage because of mass confusion. The announcers would openly question why we didn't line up correctly after the play.

I can go with ^ this. I'm not worried about the what if's, I just elated that Dooley & Sal are gone. Better things ahead, and sooner than most think, IMO.

i hated cdd from the min he lost to lsu n then the kent fiasco just proved i was right. cdd was a bad leader, terrible in game adjuster and an average recruiter at best n that spells doom in the sec.

recruiting has to be number 1 when looking at a coaches perf... all coaches look good when they r loaded with talent.

wilcox leavin exposed cdd n that we can thank him for..

IF the Fountain of Youth was discovered and General Neyland were still alive, would we ever have lost more than 1-2 games per season?

Question.....If Wilcox does not head west and the defense continues under his leadership with a bend but not break mentality and Sal is never admitted into UT campus. Is Dooley still here?

Probably. But just for this year. He was his own worst enemy.

I think these are good threads. The ability to analyze the past helps to understand today and the future.

Whether you are into stats or not, there is no question IMO the answer is "yes". Many of the players were highly rated out of HS/juco that would have benefited from being in the same system for 2-3 years and had been recruited for that scheme. Since they pulled a #30 in total D with a less talented and experienced overall roster, there is little doubt they would have been equal or better last season. Then you add in an improved offensive scheme/running game that produced a top 20 offense. There is no doubt in my mind Dools would still be here with at least an 8 win season.

For the record I am thrilled he is not. Horrible game manager, could not inspire a grade schooler, and had terrible relations with virtually everybody. But Chaney improved when Pittman came and Wilcox knew what he was doing with the talent he had to work with, which was improving with Sirmon as his wing man.

Yes. Dave Hart knew what he was doing bringing in Sal.

Some folks give Wilcox way too much credit. Would the defense have dropped to #110 if Sunseri doesn't ignorantly switch to the 3-4 without the horses to pull it off? Probably not. If Wilcox stays, does the defense finish in the top half of the country? I think that's pretty doubtful, too.

We finished 28th in Total Defense in 2011 with less talent and experience than the 2012 team that finished 107th under Sunseri. UW finished 106th Total D in 2011 and moved up to 31st in Wilcox's first year there. Maybe some people aren't giving him enough credit.

There is no question that Dooley would still be here if Wilcox had stayed. A head coach is only as good as his co-ordinators, and the co-ordinators are only as good as their position coaches are at teaching technique and implementing the scheme.

Dooley had one pretty good, but somewhat wild co-ordinator, who was here for 4 years. He added continuity. Dooley had one pretty good co-ordinator(maybe really good-not many players) who stayed for 2 years. The replacement tried to fit a square peg in a round hole. Heck, most of us could do a fair job as head coach for a while with a roster full of studs and top notch assistants.

Every team in college football could ask that question. If David Cutcliffe would have never left as OC, would Fulmer still be here? It's a question we will never know, but it's the way things work out sometimes. If Malzhan would've stayed OC at Auburn, would Chizik still be there today? Probably so.

I think he would still be here. I believe this would be his final year. Wouldn't renew contract. At best he would be an 8 win a yr coach. Far below what volnation and myself expect.
