Getting Osama bin Laden: How the mission went down - Mike Allen - POLITICO.com

The helicopter carrying Navy SEALs malfunctioned as it approached Osama bin Laden’s compound at about 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday, stalling as it hovered. The pilot set it down gently inside the walls, then couldn’t get it going again.

It was a heart-stopping moment for President Barack Obama, who had been monitoring the raid in the White House Situation Room since 1 p.m., surrounded by members of his war cabinet.

“Obviously, everyone was thinking about Black Hawk Down and Desert One,” a senior administration official recalled.

The SEALs disembarked.

“The assault team went ahead and raided the compound, even though they didn’t know if they would have a ride home,” an official said.

The special forces put bombs on the crippled chopper and blew it up, then lifted off in a reinforcement craft just before 4:15 p.m., capping an astounding 40 minutes that gave the United States a tectonic victory in the 10-year war on terror touched off by 9/11.

The sick chopper turned out to be a tiny wrinkle in an astounding military and intelligence triumph. Bin Laden was shot in the face by the SEALs during a firefight after resisting capture.

I wonder if Obama will take credit for
signing-off on the "extraction" of the courier's identity at Gitmo.

can a Senator do that?

better question might be if Obama was Pres at the time would the info have been obtained?

wait you didn't hear his speech? he gave the orders, he made him target #1. dude practically pulled the trigger.

So you're saying any other president in his first term wouldn't have used this to bolster his competence?

C'mon... he's the POTUS.

Meet The 'Seal Team 6', The Bad-Asses Who Killed Osama Bin Laden

Of course, these dudes are basically ghosts, but there is a little insight into the background of the group itself.

Coolest line in the article:

"When a former Navy SEAL was called for a comment about this article all he could say was: "You know I'd love to help you man, but I can't say a word about Team 6. There is no Team 6."

I don't understand why you'd even try to get info on those guys.

he didn't have to go on and on about all the things he did. nor did he have to pull the "all muslims aren't terrorists" card. beyond that i'm happy with the speech. but let's face it other than giving the go ahead he and his administration didn't have jack **** to do with killing the guy,.

:hmm:

You sound as though you might have some sour grapes that this particular administration is the one that got him. Don't pretend it is anything else for you. Your post speaks volumes

Its pretty clear that doing so is virtually impossible. I was shocked to see an article with that title. Had to click it.

i don't think obama is a pussy. personally i would have dropped a bomb on his compound when they found it and screw the "civilian" casualties. imagine if he had changed location. seems like a stupid risk to take.

:birgits_giggle:

Really?? Tell us again when you served in the military.

YOu wouldn't drop jack. Your rear end would be too clinched and the sweat from your brow would be distorting your vision :birgits_giggle:

I never said Obama wanted Bin Laden dead more than Bush did, nor more than any other POTUS would in his shoes.

I did not say that Obama dreamed up the mission.

I give Obama and his administration credit, however, for electing to do this in the ground troops manner so that there would be proof, for keeping a lid on it so that Bin Laden was not warned off, and for putting aside any worries that the Pakistanis would complain or object to the mission.

It is those latter three things that I think he and his administration did well on and I can't see why people don't want to acknowledge them. The truth is, even if you don't want to give him credit for it, I think the voters will. At a minimum, it will likely make it somewhat difficult for the GOP to attack him as soft on national security.
