I have lived in west tn all my life. UT has always been my favorite team.....and always will be. But what I am reading on these threads is embarassing. The unrealistic expectations, conspiracy theories, conceit and arrogance is absolutely shocking. We WERE a program that made it very difficult for an NFL franchise to even exist here......i.e. the Titans. We WERE a top 25 program annually. We WERE a top 10 coaching destination. But thats not what we are now. Now we ARE competing for in-state recruits with Vandy....and losing some. We ARE a mid-lower tier SEC program with a bad reputation, but an unlimited potential for success. We ARE, quite possibly, the most risky college coaching job in the country. I dont know who will be our HC next yr, but I have come to believe that we would be lucky to get Gundy or Strong......and we may get turned down by both. In the end, we may be too risky for either's career. THAT'S WHO WE HAVE BECOME! We need to be realistic and start working toward the future and stop reminiscing about the past. But what do i know? Not much I assure you.

Low ball hires have us where we are now.

Shoot big, not for mediocrity.

Thinking and acting like a loser will get you absolutely that, 100% of the time.

Mediocrity doesn't get a bcs invite

Mediocrity didn't win the conference.

Mediocre didn't flip the script on a trash program that is now semi-relevant.

How some people can't see this is beyond me. This is spot freakin' on.

I like the OP and can understand what he is saying. I have nothing against any of the rumored coaches, they all seem classy and on their way up in careers.

I just think that our AD needs to exhaust any and every top notch coach there is, period. Who cares if they say no. Nick Saban said no to Bama 4 times, and now Bama is about to win a 3rd NC in 4 years.

It's cheesy, but it's true. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Northern Illinois disproves that theory.

You want to see mediocrity? Watch when Strong plays an actual ranked team in his bowl game, you'll see what mediocrity looks like. A team he HAS to beat if he comes here, or he loses his job. Think he's going to just recruit the left over trash in Florida again and start beating Alabama and Florida? Think again.

He owned 7 game winning seasons until the Big East turned in to a dumpster fire this year as a whole. Even his losses this year were mind boggling.

Go ahead and count the ranked teams he has beaten at Louisville.

I feel like the problem lies with our AD. We never have an aggressive AD it seems. They always settle. DH is a procrastinator! He did it with the firing of Dooley and now this hire!

I am sorry to say this but I get the feeling we are done, UT football will not recover, I for one would just like to compete again, but oh well anyone know if we have a badmitton team?

Hope you can eat your crow, and anally pass the beak after Strong comes here, and tears it up recruiting, and brings us back to a powerhouse.

My point exactly. Do you people think we are trying to get the worst coach we can? Tennessee has as much cash as anyone....don't be fooled, but this job can make you a rockstar or a damn goat. We are short on recruiting in state and short on patience to boot. You will compete against the best teams in the country on a regular basis. And you will likely be despised by half the fanbase no matter who you are......unless you are Peyton Manning or John Gruden. Its not that what we have isnt attractive, its what we dont have is very unattractive right now. No amount of money is going to make some of these coaches risk their entire career. We made one bad hire in Dooley but thats all it took to bring this program to where it is now.......Hoping we can lure a coach from freakin louisville!

I can't believe that you are embarassed by a message board. I can assure you that all other universities with competitive athletic programs have similar message boards/forums.

I don't believe this is risky at all and any coach that believes that certainly should not take the position of head coach. Losers think that way. A real winner would embrace the opportunity to coach in Knoxville. If they are too chicken, they don't deserve to be Vols!

It seems to me, also, that everyone was saying similar things about Notre Dame just earlier this season -- but guess what, with the right coach who embraced the tradition and the passionate fan base, they are busy getting ready to play for a National Championship!

Yeah man that 71st ranking in recruiting (5th in MAC, I mean Big East) has me ecstatic too!!! Gah you are helpless my friend.

I can't speak for him, but I hope I do have to eat crow. I'll literally film myself eating a damn crow and post it on here for all to see, that is if Strong turns us in to a powerhouse.

But if he comes here and we win 8 games a year and waste 4 years and 13 mil doing it, it's going to hurt us BADLY moving forward. His upside isn't enough for the risk.

Second place is first loser.

If you shoot for the stars, you might hit a mountain top. If you shoot for a mud puddle, you'll hit it every time.

Cliches. UT has a very narrow margin for error here. Obviously.

Very narrow. You have to make a ridiculous hire at the moment, someone who will put asses in the seats, 5 stars on the roster and W's on the schedule.

Alabama did it. Ohio State did it. Both under completely different scenarios.
