I'm embarassed for us all.

Hope you can eat your crow, and anally pass the beak after Strong comes here, and tears it up recruiting, and brings us back to a powerhouse.

Guess I upset you, oh well, I would love a good coach, but if reports are correct and Strong stays put who do we get, that is what I am saying!

Very narrow. You have to make a ridiculous hire at the moment, someone who will put asses in the seats, 5 stars on the roster and W's on the schedule.

Alabama did it. Ohio State did it. Both under completely different scenarios.

And one could argue, worse circumstances.

And one could argue, worse circumstances.

Exactly.

Hell, Alabama went and stole an NFL head coach. It takes balls to do that, and even bigger ones to come back after the second no, the third no, and the fourth no.

It takes an effort like that to get to the top, especially in our situation. We're not Florida. They have the liberty to hire a good coach with a bit of risk, they have every advantage known to man...we don't.

Again, nothing against Strong, but he is the easy hire.

Second place is first loser.

If you shoot for the stars, you might hit a mountain top. If you shoot for a mud puddle, you'll hit it every time.

Cliches. UT has a very narrow margin for error here. Obviously.
We did shoot for the stars. John Gruden is as high of an expectation as there is. Even with manning and billionaire boosters going after him he said no. I dont give a **** about conspiracy theories - just facts. Hell, even Cutcliffe would rather stay at duke! DUKE. That should tell you what you need to know. I hoped we would get gruden, but it seems very bleak. Looks like Strong is as good as we can get.

I can't believe that yet. Big money has the juice here.

Do they have the will? I get the sense we're about to find out.

You want Gruden, you go get Gruden. Everyone has a price. It might take a large amount of money and one hell of a sales job, but it's more than possible.

You think Bama is worried about paying $8 mil a year to their staff right about now?

Low ball hires have us where we are now.

Shoot big, not for mediocrity.

Thinking and acting like a loser will get you absolutely that, 100% of the time.
You are unequivocally, totally, completely, 100%, exactly WRONG.

Its all start with a fanbase and boosters who are insane.

We fired a guy who at the time of his firing was a hall of fame coach. Was the program in decline and in need of a change? Yes, but how he was let go and how the fans fueled it was embarrassing.

We went out and made a hire that was splashy and risky and exactly what the fanbase wanted. Some really unforeseen things happened and he left. Hindsight being 20/20 can't be mad at the guy but the fallout of that exodus is something we will feel for years to come. it was extremely bad luck and the Pearl thing happened and a decent AD got ran out on a rail.

Dooley was hired. The dude did a good job given what he was up against and IMO could have turned it around in a year or 2 more. Dynasties are not built in a year or three you need to go through some pain to get there. if you think a dynasty just happened you obviously didn't pay attention very much. They come from teams that toil for years doing what everyone said wouldn't work and finally they build on it enough to take off.

We ran the dude out of town with everything but tar and feathers. Seriously we gave the dude an impossible task on an impossible timeframe. People act like he took a team that had been cranking out 10 wins for the last 70 years and messed it up... it was messed up before he got here and the reason he was here was it was messed up.

I work in IT and nothing at all pisses me off more than a user/client that calls me in to fix a problem then tells me how to fix it like they know. If you knew I wouldn't be here. STFU and let me do my thing.

Most of the most vocal people on here are not real fans of the game. Most don't even watch the games the read box scores or watch ESPN highlights and form their opinions based on what someone else said. I watch every game we play and I watch the games our next and last opponents play weekly. I TIVO them and usually watch them a few times. Honestly the game I see live and the game I see later are different because live you are a lot more emotionally invested.

All of you that are no longer kids have shows you watched as kids and thought were the best thing ever. watch them now. I loved the A-Team, Automan, Greatest American Hero, GI JOE and Knight Rider. I go back and watch them now and wonder what the heck I was thinking. Sometimes it is best to watch without the fanatic parts of being a fan.

I get people that love being from the south and from TN and thats great but at some point you need to not let that control the things that come out of your mouth. I hate Alabama and Florida and to some extent Georgia not just as teams but as places to live.. but I have actually lived in Florida and Georgia (currently). luckily I have never had to live in Bama but being from Chatt I was put in situations where I spent way more time in the state than I felt comfortable with. Most people only see the mas imaginary places they have never been to and just hate because thats what you do and that my friends is retarded.

We will get a new coach and no matter who it is I hope and meditate on the fact we will at least give the dude a fair chance before the high level (low IQ) backseat coaching starts.

Thats the only hope left for a big hire and we all know that they are in control of this hire. Anyone who thinks Hart is pulling the strings is ignorant. We can hope, but I wouldnt hold my breath.

I am laughing at the posters who just keep repeating "shoot for the moon," or similar words. Complaining that UT is mysteriously unable to land the top dog and not talking about why is mind boggling.

It's because the job is not nearly as prestigious as it once was.

IMO, what you need is a coach who will stay here for a long time, turn this ship around. That is much more likely to be a 5-7 year project than a 2-3 year deal.

Meyer took a job with a team he knew was on probation. I don't care if its not Gruden, but seriously?? This is the best we can do? Strong, if hired, MAY work out well over time. But I just don't think he has "IT." That is obviously a personal opinion, but...

I can't speak for him, but I hope I do have to eat crow. I'll literally film myself eating a damn crow and post it on here for all to see, that is if Strong turns us in to a powerhouse.

But if he comes here and we win 8 games a year and waste 4 years and 13 mil doing it, it's going to hurt us BADLY moving forward. His upside isn't enough for the risk.

Who else is feasibly out there with interest in UT that would be head and shoulders above Strong?

So the Florida Gators were grinders till 1992, they hire a great coach, become a national power, and now they expect to compete for an NC almost every year. Yet Tennessee has been a powerhouse for the last century, they hit a skid, and now we're supposed to accept mediocrity? F*** that, we want championships. Yeah, it's unrealistic, that was Florida's expectations and they hired Meyer, that was Bama's expectations and they hired Saban. Fanbases with unrealistic expectations are usually fans of dominant programs (Bama, Florida, Notre Dame, USC). But i guess we should just accept mediocrity right?

"as good as we can get"

That is the mindset of a real winner! Tongue firmly in cheek. If job security is your primary concern, then I suppose coaching at UT would not be for you. David Cutcliffe -- good for him -- he found a job for which there are no expectations whatsoever and from which he will be able to retire at the time of his choosing.

The coach that we need should never shrink in fear of competition or losing and neither should this fanbase! The coach that we need should never consider that because success should be the only option.

Nick Saban built a dynasty in 3 years at Alabama, literally out of trash. He basically gutted the program from the inside out. I obviously did pay attention, and if you would listen, I stated exactly that it doesn't "just happen". You go find a damn winner and you do what it takes to bring him home. Hiring Dooley and any other clown you can think of wont do it, hire a damn winner.

The way we fired Fulmer has nothing to do with where we are at.

I told you 3 years ago Dooley was garbage, and he actually turned out worse than I could have ever imagined. The fact that you just said he needed two more years tells me everything I need to know about your "DVR'ed football intellect". Dooley did a HORRIBLE job in almost every aspect.

I'm not sure where your cartoon and southern racism rants were going, but they damn sure didn't cause us to be looking for another coach.

Get a clue before you ever call me wrong. I might be an ass, but I know what I'm talking about.

Notre Dame has been in the crapper since the late 80's give or take a year here and there. And they have been a revolving door for coaches. They have the deepest pockets of all and ended up with brian kelly. Im sure their fanbase was ecstatic about that hire.

I know I haven't posted as much as the 27k lawgator, but when you say "you" should expect this to be a 5-7 year project, I can reasonably question your allegiances.

Would the Gators accept a 5-7 year rebuild? I'm thinking (Zook), no.

Even after last season, before this magical season, people in gator land were questioning Muschamp.

UT has every right to expect to be competitive NOW.

Then you have the wrong salesman. With the resources we can offer, this isn't even that difficult of a sale. Again, it will take money, but it's possible.

Nick Saban said no 4 times. 4 f'ing times. I can imagine Mal Moore is quite happy he was persistent and knew his craft. They were in a situation similar to us.

Who would please you and would win immediately, unite the fanbase, and get top recruits right away? Wait...dont answer. John Gruden i know. I hope peyton and haslam can sway him but if they can't what do you suppose we do? We could try stomping our feet and kicking and screaming i guess. Or we could move on and get the best man that will take this damn job and produce a physical team that can play some damn D.

Either wrong salesman or wrong product we will find out soon i expect. We have manning and haslam selling. Thats arguably the best QB to live and a billionaire. Sounds like big guns to me.
